whatever they charge you, it will be certainly greater than ''free''
the tools available on the net give you free debraning and free flashing....
you can use that...
its easy, i was scared shit the first time, cause the phone was a gift from mom, my k800, branded to vodafone, and i debranded it while it was still in warranty...
but it was a piece of cake..
i just had to follow instructions and that was it...
as easy as plug the cable, now remove cable, reinsert battery and again plug the cable...
a two or three times over and it was done...
i'd suggest you give it a try...
definately would save you 20£[min]
and you can buy a gift for your boyfriend[if you'd like to, or there's nothing like splurging it on yourself!  ]

I know a special cable and software would be needed to able to flash the phone. If you know any good websites on the internet them i'll have a look at them and take it from there.
London is indeed sunny and very warm at the moment.

No need for any other cables than the one that came with your phone 
It can all be done free, unlocking and debranding. Or if you're hesitant you can go to the phoneshop on the high street and get both done for a fiver or so.

I thought that the DCU-65 cable can only be used to transfer data, access the phone's contact details, item and back it up, and update the phone's software via the Sony Ericsson update service on the PC.
I am very hesistant to modify the phone's firmware in any way like unlocking, updating/flashing or de-branding it. So i would not dare to try it myself as i would worried that i would mess up or 'brick' the phone plus i know some software modification can also void the manufacture warranty through that does not apply to my phone now.
I've used the service menu to check the phones service and the main display, LED/illumination, keyboard, speaker, earphone, microphone, vibrator, camera, video call camera, memory stick, real time clock, total call time and security all works ok after 2 days since being water logged.

the phone data cable is all you need.........
and if its done for 5£, why not give that five£ and get it done quickly

Yeah you can get it done for a fiver, you just need to haggle a bit. Here in London there are so many places you can go to. I used a guy in China Town a few times and he always charged me 5 quid for unlocking/reflashing. As for the warranty, you can get a new battery or a refurb that doesn't have the void thing on it

I work around the West-end and i'm not that far from China Town. Do you know the name of the shop as i can have a look when i next go down there?
The battery is ok, and buying a new one will be free from water damage, but i cannot hide the fact my phone has been water damaged. Sony Ericsson will find evidence on the PCB. If i decided to send it to them for repair, they will not touch it once they find it has been liquid damaged and send my phone back as it is with a report that they will not repair it.
However, if i did decide to go ahead and claim the accidental water damaged on my phone's insurance, i was told i will get a re-furbished replacement (phones that have been returned within the 7 days period), so they should still be semi brand new and the Sony Ericsson's 2 years warranty should still apply. I'll check with Sony Ericsson to confirm this.

That is even better, and there is a chance your phone will be unlocked and without branding. The shop I used to use is located inside a barber in one of the side streets exiting China Town, there's a display desk with a bunch of phones in them and a laptop with a whole lot of cables. I don't know if its still there as I haven't used them for a while. I would wait and see what your insurance sends you back before going on a stroll there, unless you want some nice dimsum for lunch

Ok, i might have a look when i next down there, but i don't think i would be ready to de-brand my phone just yet.
Yeah, i guess so but my phone seems to be working ok so since the time it was waterlogged 4 days ago and will hopefully continue to do so (touch wood) untill my voided warranty runs out in March 2011.
By the way i did call the Sony Ericssion Service Centre today to ask about the warranty on re-furbished phones and they have confirmed that they are still eligible for the 2 year manufacture warranty.

Even though the moisture is removed, it would have stained and corroded the contacts.
And this will not help in the smooth functioning of the phone.
You have to remove the casing, and clean the board with IPA(Iso Propyl Alcohol solution) or with some spirit.
That should clean your board and fix all the issues related to water logging.
Advice : When ever a phone is water logged, immediately remove the casing , dry the board and clean it with IPA.

I know that liquid damaged to mobiles may take from a day up to weeks to begin to show (this is dependent on the liquid type, environmental conditions, the PCB or board type), but as time progresses, most cases of liquid damage will get progressively worse, therefore corrosion to the handset gets more severe.
Trained electronic mobile engineers can spot slight liquid damaged (with magnified inspection at close level) which causes staining on the plating around the PCB. As time progresses, where in most cases of liquid damage will get progressively get worse, causing obvious signs to the PCB where the damage is extensive and the corrosion to the handset get severe and more easier for the engineers to spot.

I was away from home at time this incident happened, so had no idea how to desassemble the phone part, had any tools for it including IPA. So i only did what i could by sliding down the casing that covers the camera, removed battery casing, battery, simcard and left it to dry over night with a cool fan blowing towards it rotating it around from back to front from time to time. I think this fast response must have helped save my phone from death but obviously i know that the damaged was already done. When i returned home, i left my phone in a closed container full of cat litter during the nights over a period of 7 days which may have also helped in some way.
It's now been a week since my phone had the water accident and it seems to working perfectly well. The only thing i noticed is there is some bright spots on the bottom of the screen (red circles):
 
I doubt there is anyway to able fix this as problem as the damage may have been been done in the LCD from the water causing either dead pixels or damage in area. So thats the only thing i have to live with and a constant reminder of what happed but it's also a "scar" for my mobile too.

I've updated my phone to the new R1EA034 firmware. It did update and it seems ok so far but i've yet to see how stable this new firmware is and what improvements or difference it has from the previous one.
However. with the the new firmware it affects the Orange homescreen and a message appears saying "HOMESCREEN This appliction uses too much memory", yet my phone memory has 95mb memory free plus it worked ok on the R1DA032 firmware. I guess i can live without it for now as I don't use the homescreen much.
Update: I found a place which did C510 debranding. I told them about the previous unlocking and what happened. They said that some files may have been deleted during the unlocking procedure so that's why i lost the network's logo, time and date on my phone. They said my phone needed to be reflashed and unlocked again and this time i opted to go back to the original Sony Ericsson firmware. It was successful and i now have the R1DA029 Generic firmware. I'm very pleased to finally have a debranded phone after using Orange firmware branded phones for 5 years!
P.S: It is still working ok after 2 weeks since being waterlogged.

I'm glad your phone sounds like it's working fine!
If the LCD really starts to bother you though, you can always try replacing it.
Replacement LCD's usually aren't too expensive (usually around $30-40 CAN). If you're comfortable taking your phone apart, I recommend it.
Just remember to work in a dust-free environment, as lcd screens seem to be magnets to dust D |
