As i remember
1kb = 96bytes not 100bytes (which many people assume)
So
1mb=960kb
1gb=960mb
2gb=1,920mb
4gb=3,840mb
8gb=7,680mb

So, there is nothing wrong with that 8gb M2.

I dont think sony applies these setttings to their m2 cards because their 1gb m2 = 911mb

The calculations above are incorrect imho. 1Kbytes = 1024 bytes, 1 Mbytes = 1024 Kbytes = 1024*1024 = 1,048,576 bytes, etc (*), but the notations on the memory sticks, as well as what's on disk drives and other media is the size unformatted. When the media is formatted, parts of the storage space becomes consumed by memory management, like filename indexes, bad sector trackings, and a lot of other administrative information that you cannot see as a user, so that is the reason for that a 1MB M2 contains only 960 KB, for example. As far as I remember, the M2 format consumes somewhat more overhead than other memory card formats, i.e. you can fit in a little more music on a 1 GB SD micro card than on a 1 GB M2 card.

(*) To be absolutely correct, the notation 1Kbytes actually stands for 1000 bytes. If you really mean 1024 bytes, the correct notation is 1 Ki bytes, according to the most recent SI standards.

You're exactly right altemyr. Nokiamaniax calculations are wrong.. I don't even know where he gets those numbers
P800 - P910i - P1i - and some non-P phones...

Guys,
There's nothing wrong with the 8GB. This is the normal user area. You will note that all capacity points (as the guys have noted very clearly below) have less user area than the advertized capacity.

The 8GB will not be in retail for a while, but there are 8GB engineering samples available. This experiment was done with an engineering sample.

@juniji

did you experience any slowdowns in access times with the 8GB M2?

thanks

Guys,
My reply comes with some authority, since I am closely involved with the design.

No. There is no performance difference between 8GB and any other capacity point. You should expect ~3MB/sec write, ~12MB/sec read performance. You will not see this in the handset - only in a USB 2.0 capable reader.

The reason - the M2 is a collection of several memory die. In SanDisk M2 specifically - write and read operations are done on 1 die at a time. So performance is die-based. Whether you have a stack of 1-die (1GB) or a stack of 8-die (8GB) the performance is the same. Format time will vary, since formatting must touch each memory location. But performance is the same. Access time - same. Everything - same.

There is higher performance available to the M2 with multiple (concurrent) die operation - but this kills the power budget of 100mA.

Nice explanations and good to hear that there is no problem in using 8gb card.

update - I was measuring 3.2MB/sec read, 9.8MB/sec write today on 8GB. Must be the firmware.

It had already been published a long while ago about 8GB memory stick micro, just that I was currious either It has compatible issues similar with MS PRO DUO in P910i or not. Cheers~
