What is I-mode

i-mode is an enhanced wap service from NTTDocomo in Japan. It has recently come to the EU through O2.

That's not true. I-mode was first made available in EU by KPN Mobile. |

@laffen
Thanks for that.I never heard of it in Europe until O2 planned to launch it in the UK.
Feb 1999 was when Nttdocomo launched theirs.

Looks like it doesn't have any flash or LED at all? |

With Ericsson and Nokia gone: we must keep their spirits alive and buy JOLLA or YOTA |

This explains it somewhat
"Japan is, of course, the home of 'higher tech' mobile.
Unlike many areas of the world, Japan chose not to go down the GSM route, preferring PDC and PHS as its first steps into 2G. Both are now likely to be short-lived as the country is rapidly shifting to 3G technologies outright and there is around 97 per cent 3G-coverage across the land.
Japan's operators split in their approach to 3G, with giant NTT DoCoMo preferring FOMA - a W-CDMA variant which UK 3G users won't be able to roam on; Softbank Mobile (previously known as Vodafone Japan) opting for W-CDMA - which UK users can roam on; and au (KDDI's network) choosing the CDMA path, with CDMA 1xEV-DO. With speeds of 384Kbps, the CDMA variant is roughly equivalent to W-CDMA without HSDPA.
Japan has a number of advanced services we don't have here yet, including contactless mobile payments and broadcast mobile TV. Unfortunately if you want to take up such services, you'll need to buy a Japanese handset."

No. The operators even use different standards so its one or the other. NTTDocomo are definitely intent on World domination.

WHAT a BIG LET DOWN....a WCDMA version which don't allow WCDMA phone not meant for their network to ROAM on...it just sound stupid.
Meaning whoever need to roam in Japan need to suffer from the Japan Vodafone poor coverage....anyway I guess this don't impact everyone since not everyone travel to japan that often...if you go as a tourist...for sure you don't want the phone to bug you all the time....in another way it is good hehehe |

just out of curiosity, does it mean that if your are on O2 or KPN you need an i-mode compatible phone to use the services or are they accessible to regular 3G phones? |

Correct me if I'm wrong but I heard you can browse i-Mode pages on wap but you can't purchase anything or take advantage of any deals on there etc.

your assumption might be correct...I used my W550 to check out some japan iMODE site before...sometime back.....it work as normal
but a lot of those things cannot be download or purchased....most likely it have some over the air download service tht we cannot use. |
