I know this is old news for anyone that checks in with the My-Symbian forum regularly, but I know there are a lot of people that rely on Esato as their only source for keeping up to date with all things P800. Basically PC-Mobile have made a fancy little device that allows you to use any headphones with a 3.5mm plug with your P800 while still retaining handsfree operation. It isn't extremely cheap but it sounds like its good quality and depending on how you use your P800, it may be just what you've been looking for.

Here's a link to the My-Symbian thread:

And here's a link to the P800 page at PC-Mobile:

I did a search and was not able to find any info at all on this forum regarding this device and even if every user of this forum already knew about it, there should still be a record of it here, maybe just for the benefit of future newbies. [addsig]

Ooo! I've not see that before! I think I'll get one of those.

I use my Jabra BT headset for talking on the phone, but the standard earbuds fall out of my ears when I want to listen to music (those conventional earbuds never work for me). With that adaptor I could use my Sony Fontopia in-ear buds.

I just don't understand why no one brought this to the attention of the Esato community earlier. Mine should be arriving in a few days. [addsig]

Actually, you can make your own. I made one myself, it's perfect. Here's what to do

Go to Radio Shack, Radio Parts, Farnell etc. etc. and buy a 2,5mm male stereo Jack. then buy a 3,5mm Female jack, and solve them together with a two way shielded signal cable. Quite easy, if you are used to solve and have a solving device.
also, if you have a ti-83 scientific calculator, it should come with a 2,5mm male > 2,5mm male cable. cut it over in two, and mount a 3,5mm male on the one end, and a 3,5mm female on the other end. And there you have it: The two cords connecteted: still data cable
Apart: adapter for your P800!

Good Luck

Of course it's easy to make up an adaptor, but that one is nice because it has a microphone and a spool for the wiring.

Yeah, it's the fact that this one has a microphone, clip, retractable lead and volume control that sets it apart from any device on the market. I bought a 2.5mm -> 3.5mm adapter from my local electronics store for 2 dollars, but the fact that you have to unplug it to receive a call is annoying.

I bought one but haven't tried it yet.

Only problem is the spool thing - you pull both ends away from each other (the male end and the female/mic end) and the giant planet-size spool hangs in the middle. so yer supposed to walk around with this big chunk hanging there.

Otherwise, quality item. Just make sure you don't pull one end away from the spool or it tangles the cords...

@Vermania
Agree with ya, it sucks.
Would be nice if I could search on "P800 doom problems" and get posts with just those three words together and not every post containing one of those words. Hmm.. gonna write to the webmaster.

Ok, I got my "Ultimate MP3 Accessory" in the mail today so I thought I'd post a mini review.

It comes a small plastic box with everything in this picture:

I'm quite impressed by the overall quality of the device. The cable setup with its built in retractable cable is very similar to the Brando USB Charger. The built-in volume control works extremely well and is very smooth, although at the lowest volume it does crackle slightly.

The most important aspect would have to be audio quality and this is where it really shines. The microphone gives a clear signal to the other person during calls, and the answer button works great. Most importantly, audio quality for music is perfect. First I used the headphones that came with my Sony CD Walkman (DEJ725) and the audio quality was only slightly better than the supplied headphones, although I defintely prefer the moulded shape of the buds and the extra length between the two buds (I agree with other who have complained that there is not enough cable between the two buds on the supplied heaphones and it restricts head movement- maybe its only a problem for people with big heads ).

Next, I used my Sennheiser HD 212Pro headphones. I must say the audio quality was amazing. These headphones are way too big to use while walking around town, but they do show the audio capability of the P800 when connected to some good headphones. Using theses heaphones highlights a problem that others have pointed out with this device. The cable is about 2 metres long, so this means that if the microphone is clipped to your collar or shirt, you have about 2m of cable when you only need about 20cm. The only way to get around this without having metres of cable hanging off you is to put the excess cable inside your shirt. I actually don't have this problem with my little Sony headphones as they are designed to be plugged into the remote which you clip to your shirt in the same way as the microphone so the 20cm cable is perfect. I wonder if you could order these through a Sony spare parts dealer.

I have a pair of Sennheiser PX100 headphones on the way. I will have the same excess cable problem with these but they should give excellent sound while still being very portable. They are foldable and come with a little case.

Overall, this device is quite pricey but it is the only device that gives me what I want from P800; the ability to listen to my Mp3s & Oggs with my choice of heaphones while being able to receive and makes calls without having to unplug anything (or even take my P800 out of my pocket). I have tried a standard 2.5mm Stereo -> 3.5mm Stereo adapter but it was very annoying to have to unplug it to make & receive calls honestly I think that the audio quality is better with this device. I'm not an expert, but I think it might have something to do with the 3rd connecter for the microphone messing up the audio a little as it is not connected to anything. Does anyone know if this is why Sony Ericsson used a 2.5mm adapter? So that people couldnt go plugging their 3.5mm headphones straight into their P800 and stuffing up the microphone connecter maybe?

These are really just my first impressions of this device and I'll see how I go after using it for a few weeks/months, especially once I get my new headphones.

Hope this helps people. [addsig]

Ummmmm, NO.

The HBM-30 is a completely different device. Why would I buy another Mp3 player when I have one built into my P800? [addsig]
