Based on all the bluetooth posts and the latest and greatest desktop SW 1.3.1 and the latest firmwares (which my phone already had), here is the detailed problem that I am sending SonyEricsson. I will post their response and/or welcome other solutions:
Installed latest TECOM bluetooth drivers. Plugged in Bluetooth. Works great. Installed SE SW. Works fine.
Click on devices in range. Double-click P800. Pair devices. Double-click serial connection:
1:
The Bluetooth serial port COM 0 will be used when connecting to device P800.
Application that use this service must be configured to communicate using COM 0. It can be stated at any time.

2:
The bluetooth serial port connection failed: The remort device closed the connection.
At this point, the connection manager is connected. I can synchronize, etc...
But, when I transfer 2MB mp3 to memory stick,
3:
Unable to copy music.mp3 - the phone is not connected
Connection manager disconnected. If I look at memory stick, only 179kb of 2MB transferred.

Belkin and Tecom are the same adapters. The Belkin adapter is apparently manufactured by Tecom.

I'm using a Nokia Bluetooth PC Card. It simetims acts up on me. I usually have a problem with connecting a serial port to the phone.

According to my information, a new SW for P800 is due this week. It is supposed to include an update to Bluetooth.

I'm using a Belkin USB BT dongle, and it works for me, although it is extremely flakey. (See below for more on that.) After tearing my hair out for days, here's how I now connect regularly:

First:
Right-click the link icon in the systray, and select "Properties." Ensure that EVERY Bluetooth connection is checked (enabled).

1) Un-pair both devices, and remove all references to your P800 and/or P800 serial ports on your computer (if you've already been trying...)
2) Put the P800 into "Discoverable" mode.
3) Open the Belkin Configuration app.
4) Set computer type to "Desktop," security mode to "Medium."
5) Close the Configuration app.
6) Open the Security (pairing) app, and pair the P800.

P800:
7) Open the BT control panel app. On the devices tab, tap the entry for your computer.
Ensure that the "Allowed to connect without confirmation" box is checked. (IMPORTANT!!)
9) Change the BT setting to "On." THE PHONE MUST BE SET TO "ON," "AUTO" DOESN'T SEEM TO WORK.
10) Click Done.

Computer:
10) Right-click the BT systray icon, select "Services->Bluetooth Serial Port->P800." (If this does not exist, select "Other devices..." instead, and add the P800 first.
11) If all goes well, your computer will connect, and syncronization will begin.

CAVEATS
**************
BT is horribly flakey for this product. Tips:

* Don't wander out of range during a sync. It will hang the transfer, and put the P800 into an indeterminate sync state. From then on, when you try to sync, the sync app will fail. This may be corrected by performing a "Full Synchronization," with the option to replace all info on the phone selected.

* Once a sync operation fails over BT, the only way to get the Sync app to sync again is to reboot the computer.

* If your BT connection attempt fails, try again. If it continues to fail, reboot. Having fun yet?

* BT SHOULD be faster than the serial (oops, I meant USB) cable, but in my experience, it isn't. I'm back to using the cradle.

Gone are my pipe dreams about keeping my P800 on my belt and having it automatically sync with my computer every time I came within range.

Any idea what the new version will be? Higher then 1.3.1? I just followed the great instructions posted and am about to try the connection... But, I also had dreams that bluetooth would automatically go out, search and connect to any other bluetooth device, in the network utopia I can hardly synchronize...

by the way, just followed those instructions, the file transfer died half way through again... D*MN!!!!!! Why is it doing this to me???

I am really diappointed that SonyEricsson released such a flaky BT system, even though that is one of their main selling points.

Hi Merkur, any idea what the new update will be? 1.4.1? When? You are welcome to MSN me or just post.
Also, where do you go to get your updates; I always end up getting to the swedish version, but never english for some reason

VOD-guy, thanks for the very detailed post. I tried everything you said and it did connect, but still ended up having the same problem of being dropped by the phone. Very interesting and informative post that I found though:

I think there are two seperate issues here: I can sync up fine over bluetooth after clicking away the error message. That all works fine, and it can sometimes idle for a good few hours connected.

However if I transfer something big it will die half way through. I have R1D and 1.3.2.7.

I would guess that this would need to be cured by an update to both of these components, the p8 firmware and updated bluetooth software to work with it.

I don't think this has anything to do with the sync software as you can still get a BT connection with COM port without this.

We shall all just have to wait Sound familiar?

I agree. Synchining does work fine after the round-about connection (correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I know of BT, it should automatically connect as soon as a pired device is in range - even the sync software has settings to sync when this happens...)

Large file transfers or anything else will kill the connection a bit into the transfer.

I tested the idle, good for about 2-3 hours, but does end up disconnecting by itself.

I sent SonyEricsson a link to this page. I don't know how they will react to a link, but it is explained better here then I could ever fit into their little suggestion/comments box on their gloabl support page...

It has been mentioned before on this forum but:

I am using a Mitsumi USB Bluetooth dongle and the software that came with it is terrible. I found a post in this forum that explained how to install the Billionton software version USBBTUSB-N. It works perfectly, never drops the connection. I can send files straight from the phone to my computer, synchronize with outlook, surf with my P800 using my home computer ADSL connection, and use the P800 as a dial up modem at 28,000 (HSCSD) all through my Bluetooth connection. I don't know the link but try a search for Billionton in this forum or MY Symbian.

Yes, just get the latest BT firmware out for your phone. Most issues now corrected:
- Can now sync fine
- Can now transfer 100's MB files without glitch
- Can now connect Laptop to phone via Dial-Up BT to use phones GPRS as Modem connection (phone sometimes freezes after about 300-400MB of data transfer, not huge issue)
- Have BT headset I use with phone that woprks without a glitch

I reckon it's more to do with the Phone Monitor thing..

I've got a much better bluetooth stack these days which generally keeps holds my p900 as long as its in range and picks it up again when it returns. But if I use the old stack it's down to Phone Monitor to get it working.

The problem I think lies in the fact that its fairly easy for a noobie to get the px00 working with the sync software but not configured correctly with the Phone Monitor such that it works 10/10. Thus.. common problem getting it working.

What stack are u using?

I use the built-in Toshiba BT software (on a Protege 3500), which does not automatically capture phone. I still need to go and click connect to get it working with P800 (not a big deal, but would be nice if it worked automatically)
