My local UK SE Service Centre have confirmed that they are installing the R2D upgrade now. Have to leave the phone with them for 24 hours (must be a big upgrade!).

Does anyone know if it is possible to restore the info back on the phone after the new firmware upgrade? It seems like I've heard somewhere that it isn't possible, but that sounds unbelievable.

yeah it was on the site for ages, then they got rid of the direct link to it so you had to search for it, but now i can't find it at all
best thing to do is just ring them and ask for the nearest SC

I had a long conversation with the data team at SE today to iron out a few of the issues beign raised here.

First, the R1D vs R1B problem. Apparently there are two European versions of the software, the one for the UK being R1D and the one for mainland Europe being R1B. The R1B can be upgraded to R1D, the version that was installed in UK shipped P800s.

Next, the R2D version has not been officially released by SE UK, although the service centres have it. If they are offering to install it SE do not mind since the service centre takes responsibility if anything goes wrong after the install. SE UK said they will be formally releasing R2D in two weeks.

Finally, the data team stated that there will be a facility to install upgrades via downloads from their website, but it will be about six months away. In the meantime they said to use the service centres.

Personally, I will wait until SE say that the R2D version has been formally released.

Oh, one more final thing. I asked whether restoring a backup made prior to the R2D upgrade would overwrite anything with old OS components. The chap told me (and he seemed to know his stuff) that all the upgrade does is flash the ROM, and that the backup before upgrade, and restore after upgrade, is the correct thing to do.

Finally a post that answers some of those nagging questions we've all had. The update over the internet thing is a great move as well, even if it will take 6 months.
