Just read this guys!

"Got to play a bit with the T610 Yesterday

Accidentally bumped into an old friend yesterday and it turned out he's changed careers and is now a SW developer for SE, go figure...

I asked him what he was packing and out came the T610.

I've been awaiting this phone ever since the first word about it and even more so when a HW developer showed me the prototype. To actually see it and play with it in real life was kind of an antiklimax though.

It's just a T68 with a better screen in my opinion. Albeit a WAY better screen, but still. the memory seems in fact to be a bit on the smallish side, my friend had 5 games, 25 tones, 6 themes and 12 pics on it from the camera and that was it. The memory was full with that.

The camera is ok i guess, but i had a better one on the P800 and i rarely used that one. It's a fun thing to play with and impress the 3310 crowd, but that's it.

Don't get me wrong, i'm still going to get one. I loved the T68 and this is a lot better, no lag for one thing when texting. They moved the SPACE though, from the 1 key to the # key.

As for the future, i had a hard time getting any info out of my friend, but he did let one piece of info slip and that was a clamshell phone with T610 Specs and slightly larger screen. Meant to be released before september.

Also one thing that irked me was the keypad lights, gone are the cool blue ones from T68i, T600 and so on, now there's a kinda faded aquamarine light, kinda pretty but noway near the cool sothing blue of T68i.

Just my 2 cents, feel free to ask.

---

About the memory allocation, i asked him briefly about that and his answer was that the phones converts all image files to RAW format and thus it takes up a lot more space. The SW and HW side of SE seems VERY segregated, he didn't know why there only was 2 Mb or if there would be an "T610i" with more memory.

I for one wouldn't mind having more mem, but it's not crucial. I've got like 6 pics and 5 tones on my T68i and there's always more than 500 k free mem. Granted the camera will need a bit more, but seriousely, who's gonna use the phone as a digicam ? Not me.. i'll need it to snap the occasional pic and then just mail it to my computer or store it at the SE wbsite.

The screen is very bright and is as good as the Samsungs TFT one. it probably will perform worse in bright sunlight as STN tend to do, but no worse than the T68 did/does.

The screen on the clamshell will be larger, but still STN.

Didn't check out the java capabilities on the phone, sorry mate.

---

I forgot one thing that might have affected the performance of the T610 i got to try. The SW on my friends phone was a home coded one, he wrote it himself and it contained a few debuggingtools, that might have affected the amount of free memory.

Nope, it's not out yet. Official date is monday May 12.

As to why other phones doesn't use the RAW format, i don't have a clue, sorry.

I would think and hope that SE is aware of the turbulence the 2 Mb of mem in the T610 created, they would be stupid not to put atleast 5Mb in the clamshell version."

The clamshell wouldn't happen to be the Z010 by any chance would it? Did he say if it had a camera? any specs at all? Thanks for the info!

I tell you what if they released a t610i within 6 months og the t610 I would be pissed off.

a) SE blatantly saying yeh we f**ked the memory side of it up
b) They would be going nokiaish on us (8910, 8910i, 3510, 3510i etc)
c) Im sure theres an upgrade they could make ie an attachment for more memory or if an SE service centre was visitied an internal attachment/replacement.

But if they released it on a whole new design format as a different phone ie clamshell then that would be better I suppose.

maybe they want to do the same as with the T68i and the T300
the only thing which is diffrent is the design and that the T300 has no bluetooth - maybe SE wants to bring new cheaper hightech phones out, have you read the article on www.clubsonyericsson.com they think that SE wants to something like a cheaper P800 without bluetooth

I don't think there will be any kind of memory attachment - an external one would not be at all favourable for as it would probably affect sales of their flash add on (assuming the memory addition can not be clicked on and off).

Also I doubt they would release any extra memory additions after sale - I think we're stuck with 2mb, people.

-Mobile-review.com said in February..
"In 2003 Sony Ericsson would introduce about 7 new phone, or even 12, if to count that ones, which were unveiled in December. You’ve already got acquainted with two of them – T310 and T610. The third and the forth models are folder type phones, which will go on sale in the end of 2Q or beginning of 3Q."

-Sonyericsson UK chief said in February..
"We are going to increase our portfolio substantially, starting from May onwards. We're not looking to be a stick-shape manufacturer or a clam-shell manufacturer. You limit yourselves in terms of what you're doing then, so we will have both types of products.

I think there are definitely groups of people who like clam-shell phones. The advantages are you are able to have a very good sized keypad and a big display. We believe it's a strong part of the market, but it's not the total market.

We will have products that fit both camps and we will have a dual line-up consisting of both types of phone. That strategy will be fully implemented by the end of the year."

I personally think that the GSM clamshell handset will be unveiled at Communicasia 2003 on june 14th.

I believe its a very good move for SE if they decide to introduce candy bar phone as well as clampshell phones to boarden their target market to suit different preferences ! Since clampshell phones are very popular in Asia, esp China (a huge market) and other part of the world as well. Consumers now have more choice in choosing their phones and this certainly would increase the market share for SE. I really like to see a clampshell version of T610, hopefully, it would look like those cool SE phones in Japan.
