P800 now 17th Feb in UK for first batch... |

Just spoke to the SE E-shop (where I have orderred mine), and although last week they told me week commencing 27th Jan, Emma has just told me 1st week of Feb.
Apparently it is still being Network tested but she was amased that the other chap had told me that date - apparently there has never been a UK date announced but the rumours around SE now point to the first week of Feb.
Shame.
Might buy that import after all...
ps -=- sorry to start a new post for this

I still find it amazing how manufacturers cannot tell from one week to the next if they are going to release their product. I also cannot understand why retailers never know that they will have a product for sale until the day it is delivered to their store!
Surely manufacturers and retails have more insight into their own operations than this? and surely its not a matter of phone companies testing the product, giving the go ahead and the phone shipping by the thousands the next day. What happens if the phone company finds a problem? Are all those thousands that were ready for shipping suddenly unpacked and reprogrammed with a new software version that the phone company has agreed upon?
I just can't figure it |

It gets worse:
Dear Mr x,
Thank you for contacting Sony Ericsson.
With regards to your enquiry concerning our P800 handset. We have been advised that the P800 handset will be available to the UK market by the end of February.
Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Kind regards,
Phyllis Irving

I agree - you have to say that unless serious faults have been found (which would presumably necessitate a firmware upgrade that we would all hear about at this stage) then it can't be that difficult to predict roughly when they will be available to SE's own e-shop.
It's a shame.. I really am getting very fed up with this. If someone had told me February when I enquired last year, I would have forgotten about this and looked into it nearer the time. |

the very reason retailers cannot tell customers when a product will be on sale is that the manufacturers are so vague. we've all read how keep telling people release dates for the p800, only to totally ignore/change it later. the same applies to retailers as well. the networks/distributors are very bad at telling us in advance when handsets are going to be available. orange are the worst offenders for this. we will get a fax from them telling us that a handset is now available to order. not 'will be available from...'. we then order these handsets, only to be told that they don't have any, so we'll not be getting any. it works similarly with the other networks/distributors.
the reason we tell customers that we don't know when phones will be in stock, is because until they are actually in our stock rooms, there is every chance that they will be delayed, and imagine how you would feel if we kept telling you that we would have the phone in by a certain date, only to keep letting you down.
we'd much rather have a system where handsets are given a release date and it's stuck to, but it ain't going to happen. just think, we could have told you the p800 will be in 6 months ago, and how cross with us would you have then been? |

Hi there...
Yes yes yes... its all very well and good saying that there may be a problem with the software and stuff... but why haven't the people in Italy and the other countries where the P800 has been released been compaining of serious problems?!
Are there any SERIOUS problems that anyone knows is wrong with the P800? I don't mean bugs, or things you don't like... I mean real serious hardware or software issues that would prevent the phone being released to whole countries at a time.
I'm wondering if there is a production problem that SE are keeping well secret. Even network testing can't take that long, as the UK are meant to be the harshest network testers... so why hasn't it been released in other countries that don't have as tight network testing?
How I would love to be working in SE's senior management now to know the REAL reason why they are stalling....

p.s. on the other hand, they could be adding some new funtionality for the UK version?

I have to admit that I'm more likely to believe that none of the SE employees know whats going on and they are guessing from rumours, hence any of these dates could be made up.
£505 to wait what could be 3 weeks or about £580 to get one tomorrow.... Making me wonder.... |

This may be some use to you there is nothing wrong with p800 (i`ve used one in uk on 2 networks Orange / o2) all has been fine for 2 weeks. when i set up internet settings Orange already had the configuration sms on their system for the p800, the girl at Technical advice said her husband was testing a p800 for Orange (that was 2 weeks ago) so it will all fall into place in the next week to 10 days. as Orange are often the last to take up a phone, it looks promising, o2 shops still say they won`t adopt it but CPW WILL offer it on o2/voda/Orange.
