Hello,

I have had a search around the forums but could not find any relevant information, so here goes ....

I have a T610 (R1A081). I am on Vodafone (with GPRS enabled) and wish to use my iPAQ (installed with the dialup software/settings that came on the Vodafone SD Card last year) to surf and email.

Now, when I got the phone I was able to surf Vodafone Live from the hand set without any problems. Additionally I was also able to surf via the iPAQ the first time I tried it.

However, subsequent attempts to surf via either the handset or iPAQ causes "Communication Errors" and I don't go any where. It looks like the Data Comm. settings within the handset gets messed up when the iPAQ disconnects as the first attempt to connect with the iPAQ (on the "virgin" phone) works fine.

I have talked to Vodafone and have done the following (with no permanent success):
1. Clear the Cache - Made no difference
2. Clear the Cookies - Made no difference
3. Re-enter the data comm. details - Works the 1st time and then same Communication Errors
4. Take the phone off the Vodafone Network and then put it back on again - Made no difference
5 Reset the provision with my service provider - Made no difference

So, the questions are:
1. Has any one seen this issue or is it something else all together?
2. If you have seen it what is the solution?
3. If you have not seen it, what things do you think I should be looking for to fix this?

The things I have tried so far are:
1. Replaced the hand set - However both displayed the same problem
2. Reset the APN - It changes from wap.vodafone.co.uk -> internet each time I use the iPAQ
3. Created a new Data Account using the settings email to me by Vodafone. - However once I use the iPAQ, the settings get "scrambled"
4. Use the step-by-step guide on the Vodafone website and made sure that my iPAQ's "dial-up" settings were correct - The extra dial-sting modem command I use is : +cgdcont=1,"ip","internet". (Should I be changing the "internet" to "wap.vodafone.co.uk"?)

TIA for any and all pointers

Well I can tell you I have been successfuly using ipaqs for a couple of years with GPRS (since the month vodafone uk introduced GPRS in fact) and have never used a dialling string so I have no idea what that is all about. I too am using a T610 currently with my ipaq 5450.

Assuming you have the T610 data account configured for "internet" (it will not work for you with wap if you are wanting to do general internet things like email and pocketIE etc) then all you need is the dialling string *99***n# where n is the CID of the internet data acocunt.

To check things first I would take the ipaq out of the loop and setup my pop3 email on the T610 and connect using the internet data account. If that all works fine and does not screw up your settings then reintroduce the ipaq with what I have said but leave out the dialling string and see what result you get.

I have never experienced what you are describing either with my T610 or previous T68/t68i and P800. I previously also had an ipaq 3870 and 3650 which did not show any of these symptoms so I am hopeful that you should not either and this dialling string seems to be the only difference between us from what you have described.

Try these 2 steps and let us know how you go.

edit: in short.. as Exodus says "I think the modem command is wrong"

I have set up the email account in the T610 (as per the iPAQ and my old T68) but I get a "Server No Found" error!

I am able to get to the web site (if I use the browser) but the email client cannot see the server! I am almost certian that the POP3 server is up as I was using it earlier this morning via Outlook Express.

I am now even more confused.

(Never had any problems with my T68!)

This message "server not found", combined with the fact that you can use the browser (i.e. WAP) suggests you are actually connecting via the WAP data profile and not the internet profile.

This was part of the reason I wanted to take the ipaq out of the equation.

So, change your email to "connect using" the data account which as the APN "internet" and try again.

I have checked the DataAccount for Email and it is set to "Vodafone GPRS".

The APN that "Vodafone GPRS" is using is "wap.vodfone.co.uk". This setting allows me to use "Vodafone Live!"

Should I change the APN from "wap.vodfone.co.uk" to "internet". If so what other settings do I need?

(As a test I just changed the APN from "wap.vodfone.co.uk" to "internet" and got the error "Cannot connect to server" and "GPRS Parameters Not Supported". Same errors are also seen when trying to connect to "Vodafone Live!")

TIA

Ok, good. you should not change that APN (because you will still want to use WAP) but instead create a new data account with just the APN set to "internet". No other values need to be entered.

The GPRS parameters not supported suggests that although you have GPRS wap access activated by vodafone you do not have GPRS internet activated by them. For some unknown reason it is a different activation so call vodafone and get them to sort that.

Once done (and you will have to wait some hours before it actually works) set you mail to use this new data account and make sure that works then go back to the ipaq, remove the dial string and change the phone number you are using to *99***n# where n is the CID of the new data account you created.

let us know...

Hi there,

After two hours and 6 phone calls I finally found someone at Vodafone who knew what an Internet APN was and had it switched back on.

All seems to work now

Many thanks!
