Special Note: The T68 e-mail function requires a circuit switched connection. POP3 is not allowed using GPRS for some reason.
Introduction
This document gives a brief explanation of how to configure GPRS and WAP in the Sony Ericsson T39 GPRS terminal, specifically for the VoiceStream network. Please note that the document does not claim to be complete, but will highlight all available settings and necessary configurations in the terminal. VoiceStream settings are highlighted in yellow.
1. GPRS settings
The following information describes available settings for the GPRS service and states recommended values where it is possible. Almost all these parameters will be automatically configured with the feature OTA (Over The Air) configuration. The recommended values are highlighted.
1. Choose Settings Menu and then Data com.
2. Next step is to create a data com account, choose Data accounts and then Add account
3. Type an appropriate name for the account, e.g. GPRS
4. Next step is to choose GPRS data as the Account type by pressing Yes. Note that Yes shall be pressed even if the GPRS data is tagged.
5. The following settings will appear:
APN nam: wap.voicestream.com
User id: Blank (no setting)
IP address: Blank (no setting)
6. Press Accept when all the above settings are done
7. Highlight the new data account and press Yes and then choose Edit

2. WAP over GPRS
The WAP service is today available with three different barrier services GPRS, CSD and SMS.
The step-by-step description below shows the configurations needed for GPRS services for a VoiceStream WAP session.
1. Choose WAP services and the following items will show up:
- …
- Select profile
- Clear cache
- WAP settings
2. Choose WAP settings and then WAP profiles
3. Choose e.g. Profile 1, (I recommend changing the name to VoiceStream at this time), then choose Gateway and the following settings will appear:
IP settings
SMS settings
Change Type
4. Choose IP settings and then:
Connect using: GPRS
IP address: 216.155.165.050
User id: Blank (no setting)
Password: Blank (no setting)
- Data mode: Connection Less
5. - Response timer: DEFAULT (150)
3. Setting iStream as Default under Wap Services
These settings will configure iStream as the default menu.
1. Choose WAP services and the following items will show up:
- …
- Select profile
- Clear cache
- WAP settings
2. Choose WAP settings and then Profile 1 or VoiceStream (or whatever named you gave Profile 1, in the Wap over GPRS settings above)
3. Choose Chg homepage and yes - then name Title to iStream, then yes.
4. Address will come up, Put in: wap.myvoicestream.com, then yes
5. Setup is complete, back out of wap settings – now reenter and the default (number 1 choice) should be iStream – click on iStream, and the iStream menus should appear.
Please note:
1. The Mobile Internet site will still be available under bookmarks after changing the Home page.
2. iStream menu features and content must be configured through VoiceStream’s WEB site.
3. Many, many Wap sites, which work on the T39, are available to be placed in Bookmarks – Two good sources are for WAP addresses:
http://www.wap.com
http://mobile.yahoo.com/phone/dir
4. A free wap site with downloadable ring tones and background images is available. Place the following address in your bookmarks:

I'm currently doing POP and SMTP on both my Ericsson T39m and PDA (Visor Edge running Eudora Mail with a Red-M bluetooth springboard module) via VoiceStream's GPRS (VS-GPRS).
At a minimum, I had to subscribe to VoiceStream's undocumented $5/month "SmartPhone" iStream service (The VS CSRs know about this) to have access to APN:internet2.voicestream.com (allowing DUN over GPRS).
The following web site provides some good pointers on setting up a T39m with VoiceStream, should be easily adaptable for the T68...
http://mork.home.mindspring.com/myvoicestreamhelp.htm
My own observations:
A] First thing to remember with VS-GPRS is to use IP numbers of your ISP's POP and SMTP mail servers (like "###.###.###.###" instead of "pop.yahoo.com", for example).
Here's an example:
1) goto http://www.samspade.org/
2) scroll down to "IP Whois" listed under "Quick Tools"
3) enter "pop.earthlink.net" for example
4) Whois returns a bunch of IP numbers that resolve to "pop.earthlink.net"
5) Do the same for your SMTP server.
B] A lot of ISPs block remote SMTP to prevent spamming (i.e., must be directly dialed-up by phone/DSL/cable to use SMTP); Earthlink is one such ISP for example. Yahoo provides remote POP/SMTP services for a fee.
C] Some ISPs allow remote SMTP but may require things like authentication (username/password), a check before send with authentication, or the use of an alternate port (some port # other than 25).
Now if I could just figure out how to get reliable DNS numbers for Voicestream, those I've tried to date don't work for me. Also trying to figure out how to WAP browse from my Visor Edge, can't seem to get that working right yet either. HELP!

Also, if you need to VPN thru the iStream connection, you need to call and request access to the "internet3.voicestream.com" APN. I have the 19.99 PDA plan. By default I get the internet2 APN only. I called last night and the surprisingly knowledgeable iStream rep said I need to have access to the "PDA3" plan. Still 19.99 per month, but disables internet2 and adds internet3 access. I confirmed today that it works beautifully. I can access the internet with or without VPN'ing into my work's network now...Thru VPN, I can access my work Exchange server for IMAP4 now too! |

Can you provide more info on the features of the "PDA3" plan? Like is it good if one wants straight internet access on their PDA?
I can't seem to find a good DNS pair that works with "internet2", is DNS any better with "internet3"?
All I want to be able to do is the following...
- have my PalmOS PDA (with bluetooth) work with my T39m
- POP/SMTP mail
(works now using IP #s and an alternate port for the SMTP server)
- WAP browsing on the PDA
(can't seem to get that working correctly)
- PQAs on the PDA
(have not tried yet)
- HTML/cHTML to view handheld-friendly and i-mode pages
(can't seem to get that working correctly)
I can't get the Blazer or WAPman browsers to work.
Thanks greatly in advance!
