Because the first thing I'd be thinking about when dropping a laptop is "I hope the harddrive is well protected!"

If you're doing enough to damage the drive then you're more than likely doing enough to damage the rest. Or at least cause damage not only related to the drive.
Unless of course this has been developed for all those people sky diving with their laptops jools
(Dropped my laptop, admitedly an evil PC type
without any issue, would say i was damned lucky to be honest though)

If the hard drive heads are writing data when the laptop suddenly receives a jolt (not necessarily colliding with something physical - but a sudden movement) the hard drive can be damaged and data lost.
The sensor in the new iBooks detects sudden acceleration or decelleration and parks the heads, so it works before hitting something.
And potentially, your data could be worth far more than the cost of the computer!
