A study of Australian drivers found that those using cellphones were four times as likely to be involved in a serious crash regardless of whether they used hands-free devices like earpieces or speaker phones that have been perceived as making talking while driving safer.

Yeah i've heard about that one, something to do with concentration levels being lower as having to divide attention to conversations and driving.

i think the theory is that while on the phone part of your attention is subconciously diverted to visualising the person you are talking to, whereas your brain doesn't do that when the person is in the car with you because you can see them.

exactly, some ppls just can't study in a noisy environment.

Naturally. Those who use headset they also know it. In practice it attracts attention while driving.

Please donīt listen to all stupid reports out there.
sure you loose consentration level when talking in phone.
But if you have headset you have one hand more free to use to shift gear or turn sharp. So please donīt say that itīs as safe to drive with out handsfree as it to drive with one.

Driving safety depend on user's practice. why ppl r blamed on that little handfree kit lol. I'm using handfree kit for more than 3 years while driving but never done any accident.

Good for you....nevertheless, usage of mobiles while driving, with or without handsfree kits, should be banned.

I think it depends on the user, what he concentrates most on. Like me, I concentrate mostly on the driving and little on the phone.
But I guess most people concentrate more on the phone.
And banning even handsfree's is just stupid.

When im driving i always concentrate 100% on the road....but attention can very easily be distracted when you get texts or calls....regardless of handsfree's ect.

i woulda thought this was obvious... obviously the person has 2 talk and think about wat 2 say regardless of handsfree or not... only benefit is u get 2 hands vs 1

just pretend you are talking to someone in the car

What about a screaming baby in the back of the car? Not a distraction at all. What's the difference between a phone call and having noisy passengers? Or singing along to the radio? Steering wheel tapping optional
Arseholes that do these surveys

what really distracts the driver isn't the actual conversation, it is pushing buttons on the phone and looking at the screen. That means the most dangerous part of the call is when you dial a number or search through your phone book. Answering a call can also be dangerous if the headset doesn't have a button on it to answer/end the call.
Most people drive with one hand anyway if they have an automatic. In this case, holding a phone to your ear is no distraction whatsoever.
