Several people have been injured after explosions on the Underground network and a double-decker bus in London.
A police spokesman said there were "quite a large number of casualties" at Aldgate Tube Station.

And Scotland Yard confirmed one of several reports of explosions on buses in the city - in Tavistock Place - but said the cause was not yet known.

One caller to BBC Five said his friend had seen "the bus ripped open like a can of sardines and bodies everywhere."

PA also quoted union officials as saying sources had told them there had been at least one explosive device on the Underground.

Casualties on London's underground after incident

LONDON (Reuters) - An explosion blew up a bus in central London on Thursday, police told Reuters after witnesses said they had heard a big boom.

Police closed off the area around Tavistock Square. A policeman, who declined to be identified, said there had been an explosion on a bus.

"We heard a big boom and we were all told to evacuate the building," an officer worker said. There was no word on casualties.

People were also seen streaming out of a London underground station covered with blood following what police described as a "major incident".

Similar scenes were reported by witnesses outside other stations in the capital. The whole of the system was shut down and major thoroughfares were closed.

The cause of the incident, which occurred at rush-hour on the underground network, was as yet unknown.

"There have been some casualties and this has been declared as a major incident," said a spokeswoman for London's Metropolitan Police.

Emergency services rushed to the Aldgate East underground station where police reported one incident at 8:59 a.m. local time (0759 GMT).

Witnesses said passengers were seen emerging from the station at Aldgate East with blood on their faces and their clothes ripped.

"There were people streaming out of Aldgate station covered in blood," said Kate Heywood, 27, on her way to work.

A Reuters correspondent at Oxford Circus station, at the heart of the underground system, heard an announcement over the public-address system saying: "A power outage has occurred London-wide. All train services are suspended."

A station official said: "All the power has gone down. I don't know when it'll come back."

Explosions in London batter financial markets

LONDON (Reuters) - Stocks dived and demand for government bonds and safe-haven currencies soared on Thursday after a series of explosions hit London's transport system, causing injuries and reportedly some fatalities.

The FTSE 100 index fell around 2.5 percent and other markets abroad followed suit, including the FTSEurofirst 300 which fell 2.8 percent.

Sterling sank to a 19-month low against the dollar and plunged 1 percent to a 6-week low against the euro. The safe-haven Swiss franc rose to one-month highs against sterling.

"It has become an increasing possibility that it's a terrorist incident, as opposed to initial reports of a power outage and that's moving the market," said Neil Mellor, currency strategist at Bank of New York.

London Clearing House, which matches trades, was evacuated and matches halted, but the Bank of England said it was continuing with its monetary policy committee meeting.

September Bund futures rose to contact highs. Gold surged. Insurance stocks were ebbing particularly hurt.

"We are farming out orders to other financial centres, such as Paris because of the uncertainty on the ground in London," said one London-based stock dealer.

Another said: "You can't get a price on anything on any side."

British Home Secretary Charles Clarke said the blasts in London had caused "terrible injuries" and a source at the Metronet transport consortium said there had been "some fatalities".

all mobile networks are out, im thinking its too much traffic on the line

cant get tho to anyone on a mobile, altho i did manage 2 get hold of my sister as she works in town,

Posted by JiggyJaggy
Mobile network frequencies can trigger electrical impulses at the correct frequency, so they act as a bomb trigger, so thats also why they have been turned off.

Posted by defensive
All of the mobile networks are being shut down in london by the operators due to the possibility of the bombs being remotely detonated using them.

That is why no-one can get through on a mobile in central London, only landlines are still available.

Watching the bad news here in Australia. coverage not the best, gotta hate the f**king scum bastards doing this shit!

London mobile networks jammed

Fire crews were rushed to the scene of the blasts
Mobile phone networks in London have been overwhelmed following the blasts in London.
Networks were running at near capacity as those caught up in the chaos called family and friends.

The surge in the number of calls being made meant that many people had trouble getting through first time.

Vodafone said it had reserved some network capacity for the emergency service workers dealing with the disaster.

"Because all our switches are at capacity, we need to ensure police and emergency services can communicate," said a Vodafone spokesperson.

they now think 1 of them might have been a suicide bomber

Posted by amnesia
people who say it's by people who dont want the Olympics in UK, why do you say that?

If they wanted to stop it, wouldn't they have done it closer to the date rather than 6 years earlier.

They're probably going to blame all Arabs in the world now *sighs*

Posted by pmerryman
If there are suicide bombers, I think we are looking towards Al Quieeda.
Our thoughts should go out to all those affected on this terrible day.

Posted by Cornholio_666
i don't blame races like arabs, whites, i blame fanatic groups like al-quieda and the taleban.

Yes, my friends lawyer works in Canary Wharf and he was on the top of a rooftop. He sounded prettyyy serious, especially since the Army had recently entered London.

COBRA is now underway.

Posted by Cornholio_666
i heard someone on the news earlier saying that this attack was "designed" to take london to a stand still and damage the economy, not to kill masses of people.

Posted by seanflynn
There is supposed to be loads of info on some islamic website claiming they were the attackers? but i cant find any al -queeda website ?
