vodaphone australia commenced 3g services on 31st october in Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra, in addition to the airports of Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. the network will be rolled out to Brisbane and the Gold Coast by March 2006, and Perth and Adelaide by July next year.
the launch lineup looks like this:

w550i available on a telstra $40 plan from this week (or so the guy in the telstra shop told me yesterday). apparently it's a telstra exclusive.
z520i should be available on other networks in the next few weeks (only optus $30 plan ATM). seems SE are giving away a hbh-pv700 bluetooth handsfree in the box!

Hi I am from Darwin and new owner of Panasonic VS3. It is pretty good just wish I could remove the poxy "yes optus" network logo. Surfing wap with telstra pre paid costs very little but with optus pre paid it costs an arm and a leg. Grrr...

YO !
Another new Aussie user here... located in Bowen Mountain, NSW (not Bowen Hills, Qld !!) - it's where the BIG bushfires were in 2001.
I have a new P910i, and the trouble has a K750i....
I also have heaps of hames, themes, and other effluvia (if anyone wants it).
I'm also a Mac / Linux user - none of that Windows shite in my house (well, except for the 5yo daughter's laptop, and that gets reformatted this weekend !!!)

here be another aussie.
i must say i'm disappointed in the lack of a aussie based dedicated mobile phone forum, while i now have my phone an aussie forum would have been of great help to me in choosing one.
but i got a z520i and i LOVE it...my first SE phone, i've had it just over a week and still enthralled with it and still getting used to it after a older style phone.
cheers

Just got a K750i and had it flashed up to w800i. Total Bill $510 rather than the $800 for w800i
Although I'm noticing the battery drains very quickly when I have the radio on, and more so when playng MP3s

Howdy all,
Just thought I'd take the time to post in the Aussie thread as a newly joined Aussie member myself. I stumbled across Esato in a frenzy of searching for further information on the SE m600 which I have purchased (and expect will arrive tomorrow).
I've posted a new thread for a Yahoo Group that I created too which should show up in my sig

Another Aussie here. Been at Esato for a while now, but only realised this thread.
I have a K750i. Originally Optus branded, but Davinci cleaned that up. I have also done a fair few of the Far mods.
On a sidenote, does anyone know where I can get a W810i black middle housing? cnn.cn won't reply my numerous emails.

g'day aussies. LoL, I'm not an aussie, but I'v been living in Brisbane for the past 2years. Figured that would count for something.
Just wondering if any1 knows of a cellphone shop that sells contract-less SE cellphones, cause I'd rather not buy a cellphone with a '3' logo on it, or one that has a shortcut key to Optus Zoo. I've bought 2 cellphones from Sony Central in the past 2years, but its a bitch to wait 2weeks for stock to come in from Sydney or Melbourne whenever I buy one.

Posted by 87ers
woah, never knew myer sold cellphones. LoL, guess it would probably be a good idea to actually enter a myer store. Many thanks mate, just a quick question: what sort of payment options does technoni offer?
Posted by masseur
not sure about myers but Grace Bros in NSW have sold phones for years. Of ocurse Grace Bros is now all Myers but I haven't been in Myers for ages
A Q about upgrades in Oz 'coz we're moving back in October but I kept out Telstra numbers active while in Europe becaue they are so good.
Do Telstra and others do phone upgrades like they do in UK each year and is in at a good price compared with taking a new contract?
Posted by gelfen
myer have sold phones for years as well, but they are mostly prepaid packs.
you'll find telstra is to australia what voda is to the UK - the biggest but also most expensive. i also don't think any australian providers offer upgrade deals.
Posted by ballfire99
anyone seen or able to get a p990 in aust yet?
Posted by gelfen
no. i've noticed the SE-Aus website has been getting ahead of itself the last six months or so.
Posted by 87ers
Hmm, I think they've been doing that for quite a long time now. I remember waiting anxiously for the K600i to be released last year. When it finally removed the coming soon sign, I searched the whole city for it LoL~ It only came out in Brisbane around a month after that, and that was because 3 was selling it (wait, they had K608i). I got mine 2weeks after 3 started selling it from some optus store. No logos on the casing, tho the right softkey linked me to Optus Zoo. I wonder why I never thought of flashing it with OEM software tho...

Depends on your use. Most telcos will agree to upgrade your phone once you start talking about deals you see other carriers offering, providing you have a reasonably large monthly bill!
A friend of mine was given a K750 just because he was disgruntled with the service and told them he intended to change providers (he had his and his wife's phones on the same account, about $800 a month).
The only other way to get a new phone out of your telco is to extend your contract and pay off the phone through monthly payments on top of your bill. I'm doing this with the K750, and will pay it out to buy the K800. I fit my phone use into a $49 monthly cap (for up to $230 worth of calls), so I don't think my provider will be giving me a free phone

Author, Educator and Poet

16 November 1920 - 4 September 2006
Somewhat overshadowed by the death of Steve Irwin this week was the passing of Colin Thiele, renowned Australian children's author. Winner of numerous literary prizes, and publishing some 100 books including three of my childhood favourites Shatterbelt , Aftershock and Seashores and Shadows, he is best known for his classic Storm Boy.
Peter Brock
King of the Mountain

King of the Mountain
26 February 1945 - 8 September 2006
In what is fast becoming one of the sadest weeks in recent Australian history, we farewell another legend in Peter Brock. Brocky lost control of his Daytona Coupe on a bend while driving in the Targa West '06 rally and crashed driver's side into a tree. "Peter Perfect" was not only a household name and legend in Australian motorsport, but his achievements were also recognised internationally. UK 'Motor Sport' magazine named him among the tweny most exciting drivers of all time, a list which included the likes of Senna, Schumacher, Fangio and Nuvolari, and ranked him the second greatest touring car driver of all time.
Brock was without pier in Australian motorsport, his record unequalled. He was also a keen advocate of motor safety and founder of the Peter Brock Foundation, which raised funds for underprivileged youth. Brock's nine wins at Mount Panorama in the Bathurst 1000 race will ensure that number 05 is always remembered as "The King of the Mountain".

Career highlights:
Bathurst 1000 Enduro wins (9): 1972, 1975, 1978, 1979, 1980,1982, 1983, 1984, 1987 (record)
Sandown 500 Enduro wins (9): 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1984 (record)
Repco Round Australia Trial Winner: 1979

Australian Touring Car Champion (3): 1974, 1978, 1980
ATCC runner-up (5): 1973, 1979, 1981, 1984, 1990.

I couldn't believe it when I heard the news. Brocky was my favourite racing driver.
I watched him (on tv) win at Bathurst over and over again, I built a replica of his racecar out of lego, I was devastated when he split with Holden in 87 over the Polariser incident, and overjoyed when he dumped the Sierra's and M3's and returned to the Commodore for the 90's.
I actually got to see him race at Pukekohe in 91 and 92. His Holden engined Commodore in 91 sounded better than the Chev powered one in 92 IMO. I loved watching his Commodore chase the Richards /Skaife Godzilla Skyline down the back straight at Puke.
I never thought he'd go like this, in a crash. But then the same could be said of Possum Bourne, Bruce Mclaren, Jim Clark and Ayrton Senna.

Carkitter, couldn't agree more with all you said. He was my favourite Aussie racing champ also and it's a sad loss. The King of the Mountain is no more

Australian Sprinter and Olympic Medallist
15 June 1942 - 3 October 2006
Australian sprinter Peter Norman has died after a heart attack at the age of 64. A five-time national 200 metres champion, Norman is best known as the often unnamed athlete who stood with US runners Tommie Smith and John Carlos during their black power salute at the 1968 Olympics.
Norman ran the race of his life to claim the silver medal in the 200 metres at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics in 20.06 seconds, a time that would have won him the 200m gold medal at every subsequent Olympics until 1984 and which still stands as the Australian record. A Salvation Army Officer, Norman was one of the few people who knew in advance what Smith and Carlos planned to do. In support of their protest he wore an Olympic Project for Human Rights badge. It was also Norman's suggestion that Smith and Carlos wear one glove apiece after Carlos forgot to bring his gloves to the podium.

I moved from Telstra to Optus when Optus started in the 90's but moved back to Telstra a couple of years ago.
I do like the current nextG and have the samsung nextG phone which works brilliantly with foxtel, and whereis for stuff local to where you are etc etc
What I like about Telstra is that I have all the family phones on one account and we canshare the minutes/texts etc. Not only that our home phone, bigpond broadband and foxtel are all on the same bill too making it very convenient having it all in the one place
Posted by SE4NICK
I cant afford the Next G network
Posted by masseur
you can get phones form $30/month which isn't too bad.
What I don't like is that they are 24 month contracts.
Posted by SE4NICK
Ya 24 month contracts are annoying and i could possably stretch to $30 a month but then again dont you have to pay extra if you go over $30
