well i suppose you could get a job stacking shelves or in retail (maybe an electronics or mobile phone store?), or perhaps as a general gopher in some business or other.

if you're into swimming in any way there are some other suggestions i could make - but you'd need to pay for the courses (they're usually only a few days long but the qualifications would be recognised both nationally and internationally). i can pm you details if you wish.

ahhh no sorry mate. I hardely know how to swim. I can stay above surface for a short wile thats about all the swiming i can do

Posted by gelfen
oh well, worth a try

i suppose you could always wait tables, or maybe some bar work, although you might need a Responsible Serving of Alcohol Certificate - which from memory is $20-$30 for a half-day course depending on which state you're in. actually, it may not be a requirement but it would be a bonus anyway.

Posted by Bjerkebanen
cool

Posted by gelfen
yeah, once you have the RSA, you can pretty much take it anywhere around the country. you can even do specialised bar courses (basically training in how to pull beers and make mixed drinks and cocktails, with a bit of presentation thrown in) but they are more expensive and take longer. that's what i thought of doing after high school until i got into the swim teacher/lifeguard thing while i was at uni.

Posted by Bjerkebanen
That bar thing sounds okay i supose. Its worth a try

Posted by Krubach
Forget it.
You'd drink more than your clients

Posted by Bjerkebanen
doubt it mate. Im one of those idiots whoo get wasted after 3 pints!

That's why i left bartending!

oh thanks for the encouregment matey!

Late to the party, but another aussie on board (pun not intended).

welcome on bord matey! Im not aussie myself but im going to live there for a wile in the future.

from today's Herald Sun newspaper:

Melbourne simply the best city
AAP
06feb04

MELBOURNE has retained its position as the best city in the world to call home.

Often derided as Bleak City by Sydneysiders, Melbourne topped a survey of 130 cities, narrowly beating out the other four Australian capitals surveyed - because its weather rated the best.

Sydney lost ground because its crime rate was rated on a par with New York and London.

The Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) survey ranked Melbourne, Vancouver and Vienna as the best cities for expatriates to live, with Perth fourth and Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney equal sixth.

Geneva was ranked fifth, while Papua New Guinea's capital Port Moresby kept the title it took in the last survey in October 2002 as the worst.

"Melbourne pretty much top scored in everything," said survey co-editor Jon Copestake.

"But the difference between all the Australian cities is minimal. One thing Sydney had different to the other cities was a higher crime rate, and it's climate. It's level of humidity was worse than Melbourne's."

The London-based EIU assessed the level of hardship for expatriates in the 130 cities, using 12 factors including housing, education, recreational activities, health, climate and terrorism.

Cities were rated one to five in the 12 categories, with one meaning there was no hardship and five indicating extreme hardship.

Melbourne received the perfect one in each category, including its unpredictable weather, to give it an overall score of one.

The other Australian cities were all given a two for climate, while Adelaide also received two for housing, Brisbane and Perth scored two for transport and Sydney for its crime. Port Moresby received five for crime and an overall score of 80.

While Perth was given an overall mark of 1.1, Adelaide, Brisbane and Sydney scored 1.2.

The heightened terrorist threat only had a minimal impact on western cities, even those in the United States, largely because of newly developed security measures.

The highest ranked US city was Honolulu in 19th on eight points, while New York was 51st with 16 and Washington was the lowest of 16 American cities in the survey at 57th, mainly due to a higher risk of terrorism giving it an overall score of 19.

London was equal 45th, along with Los Angeles, Madrid and San Francisco.

Kuwait fell the most places, dropping from 87 to 97 because of the war in neighbouring Iraq, while Harare suffered the greatest actual drop in living standards as a result of ongoing unrest and slid eight places to 118.

The Iraqi capital Baghdad was not included in the survey.

Thats great but this is where I get torn in two. Being Melbourne born and mostly bred but having lived in Sydney for quite a time I can see both sides of the argument

Actually we are thinking of moving back to Melbourne when we get back to Oz permanantly because Sydney really is way expensive these days for houses etc

G'day yall

I'm from Canberra - I've got a t-mobile T610 (or two) from the US. Do you guys know of anyone in Canberra who either does firmware upgrades or has a terminator dongle?

Cheers

@masseur: actually, housing prices all over have been skyrocketing (an average 70% increase over the past five years, with average income only increasing by ~26%) but sydney is definitely the worst. i've recently purchased a block in melbourne's north, and in the six months i was looking the price rose almost $20k for equivalent sized blocks. if you're looking for a bargain then tassie is still pretty good, but you really need a guaranteed stable job to make it work because employment opportunities are much less than on the mainland.

in IT you're pretty much locked in to sydney or melbourne (or possibly bris-vegas, maybe adelaide, which are a bit cheaper - but again you need to be going to a job rather than looking for one), but sydney is just too expensive. it's not just land/housing, but the overall cost of living is appreciably more than melbourne.

anyway, when are you thinking of coming back?

Hello guys !

I'm moving to Melbourne on 22nd Feb. A week before my RMIT class begin. I'm just wondering where in Melbourne could i find a T630 and what is the selling
prices there ?.

I'm just comparing the price and decide should i buy it here in Malaysia or until i arrive in Melbourne.

thanks

Posted by gelfen
you can try this shop in Melbourne's CBD. it's literally one block from RMIT

http://www.ow.com.au/default.cfm?page=http://www.ow.com.au/products/sony_ericsson_main.htm

they offer their phones outright: unlocked/sim-free/non-contract. then you can buy a prepaid sim from whoever you want (telstra, optus, voda, but not virgin - no wap/gprs service) or a vodafone no-plans sim.

t630 - AU$690, sim card - approx. AU$30

i don't know any provider plan prices yet since anyone who has it only got it in stock yesterday. my guess is between $40 and $60, possibly more, per month for 24 months.

btw...i finnaly got my p900 .. IN SYDNEY!!!!

and i really hate sydney-siders who take their city far too seriously. sheesh! the sydney-melbourne thing is a friendly rivalry - not a blood feud. however, i do want to address your points so....

quote - in sydney we are not stupid enough to turn right from the left lane ..
well, that's only in the cbd and only because of the trams. you might notice that pretty much every other city with a regular tram service has similar road rules - because if they didn't you wouldn't have much of a car left.

quote - as well as we dont go out with our cussons!!!
well why should it matter if we sleep with soap? at least it's clean and smells nice. however, i suspect you meant cousins so i should point out that T-A-S-M-A-N-I-A is that little island off the south-east coast of mainland Australia with the small population, really cold weather, and girls who can run really fast (or at least faster than their brothers). apart from that, it is technically legal - and standard royal behaviour - for cousins to marry.

quote - and melbourn dosnt not have the best weather!!!! its cold like 10mnths a yr
you obviously missed my post above (on this page) where melbourne was again named the world's best/most-liveable city, in part due to it's better weather compared with the other aussie capitals. besides, melbourne is only seriously cold, by Australian standards, for about two months of the year if that. melbourne weather may not be consistent day-to-day, or even hour-to-hour, but we don't get the extremes of our northern neighbours. nearly every year sydney has (a) a flood, and (b) bushfires. melbourne doesn't have those issues so often.

quote - btw...i finnaly got my p900 .. IN SYDNEY!!!!
and so could i - in melbourne - if i really wanted one. i could go here, here, or even here - all of which would take me a lot less time to do than in sydney because at least in melbourne our public transport system actually works.

so dude - relax. accept your city for what it is, and be happy with it. if you're not happy, then move. you're never going to convince me, and i doubt i'll convince you since you seem so irrational about this - but if you want to take the argument further then at least bring something real to the table rather than juvenille emotion and abuse. but i'll stand by this 'til the cows come home:

melbourne has better weather
it costs less to live here
the spiders are less dangerous (sydney funnel web, the most venomous in the country, is also one of the few spiders in the world to actually attack without provocation rather than in self-defence)

i'm not looking for a fight with this. i'm as partisan as the next person when it comes to my home town. it just helps to have the weight of international opinion on my side.

EDIT - the url's

Sorry, I missed this. Actually Canberra is great for government IT work though I'd hate to live there and our choice would def be brissy. We'll see. I guess we'll be back when this very lucrative contract I am on finishes but its not looking like this year

this is quite a relevant thread for such discussion IMHO but like gelfen said its just friendly rivalry and always has been. As I said before I am melbourne born but lived in Sydney quite a bit so I see both sides!

okay okay. Im mving to Australia in about 18 days or so So were do i go Sydney or Melbourne? This spider in Sydney whoo atacks u for no reason. Does that happend all the time? But when it all comes to all i guess what i really like to know is: What is the most friendly city?

Posted by masseur
if you are not restricted by work or whatever then try them both out yourself and decide. As you can see here you will not get a straight answer from people of either city

Posted by havok011101
It was kind of inevitable. I'm sure if i can browse from my computer, someones gonna work out how to do it from a phone nearby!

@d-_-b: no worries mate. i never said sydney was the worst, just that melb was better. i'd much rather live in sydney than a lot of other places i could think of. besides, i wasn't going to give up such a good opportunity to use sarcasm, irony and my rapier wit

@bjerky: i have this thing about spiders, but by any standard the sydney funnel-web is not good news. as masseur said, you should try both cities. also have a look in on birsbane - it's a pretty nice town with a different vibe than the rest of the east coast.

@masseur: damn those lucrative contracts! how dare they interfere with living a poor, miserly existence you can't really blame anyone for not wanting to live in canberra - it's a nice place to visit, but....

The most friendliest city in all Australia is.......Hobart.......

Whoops....

Thats overseas. Cant include them !

Seriously, those spiders in Sydney are a real problem. They hunt in packs looking for poor unsuspecting tourists to prey on. If the spiders dont get you the kangaroos wandering down the main street will. They have a pretty strong hind legs and can easily tear you apart.

Heaven help you if you cross the path of an angry koala !

good news! for us tourists.....!!!...but i didnt see a danger spider in Sydney...so im lucky that i got home????to bad better luck next time....

Posted by masseur
agreed. I too have never seen a funnel web though I have seen plenty of red backs of course but we spray the house and garden twice a year so even they are very rare at our place now.

on a side note, I have one single solitary tattoo in a very hidden place and its of... a red back spider

about that 'decease of melbourne aquarium which killed 3 ppl once...'

Thanks!! i'll keep that in mind.......

Posted by gelfen
the melbourne guy??!! THE MELBOURNE GUY?!?!?!?!?!?!

and i thought we were friends now

i never said the sydney funnel web was prevalent, just dangerous. and i freely admitted i have a thing about spiders. i have previously spent a number of years in the first aid and acquatic industries, and let me tell you - not pleasant.

from http://www.amonline.net.au/factsheets/funnelweb.htm

The Sydney Funnel-web Spider
The Sydney Funnel-web Spider (Atrax robustus) occurs from Newcastle to Nowra and west to Lithgow. They especially favour the forested upland areas surrounding the lower, more open country of the central Cumberland Basin. This includes the Hornsby Plateau to the north, the foothills of the Blue Mountains to the west, and the Woronora Plateau to the south. Funnel-web occurrence is low in much of central-western Sydney, and also the sandy coastal parts of the eastern suburbs and the Botany Bay area. They do better in areas of sandy clay, shale or basaltic soils that can retain moisture more effectively.

btw - the legionella outbreak actually killed four people, and it was four years ago. i think the publicity and multi-million dollar payout have served to make the melbourne aquarium the SAFEST place for legionella in the country. i think every capital has had it's fair share of legionella outbreaks. i was actually there during the outbreak and nothing happened to me. it generally only affects the elderly or those with a weakened immune system.

Damn you gelfin! I have a freak out thing for spiders too. Almost puked up my brekkie and ran like a girl. Dammit.

We've seen a couple of spiders down here. But they are the garden variety. Seen heaps of red backs at the old place, but funnily enough there aint so much where I am now living so it's all good. No funnels yay!

Vacuum cleaners are the best with dealing with spiders. Unless you have one of those dyson bagless varieties - ew ew ew.

BTW this gives you an indication of Melbournians. They are sadistic bastards.

got this article from ninemsn (variants appeared in a number of aussie newspapers too). i've tried this stuff and it's a bloody good drop (this from a non beer drinker)!

Tasmanian beer voted world's best amber

A specialty beer brewed in Tasmania has snared the coveted title of the world's best amber lager.

Cascade Autumn Amber, a seasonal drop produced at a historic brewery in Hobart owned by Carlton and United Breweries, received the accolade at the World Beer Cup 2004, held in San Diego, California, at the weekend.

Much more than froth and bubble, the event attracted some 1,500 entries from more than 390 breweries across 40 countries.

As well as taking gold for Autumn Amber, Cascade also bagged bronze in the American-style wheat beer category for its Summer Blonde - part of the brewery's Four Seasons range.

Cascade head brewer Max Burslem, who has been in the business for more than 30 years, said the awards were fantastic recognition for the company and Australian beers in general.

"This is the world's toughest beer competition and further proof we can make beers that are the best of their style worldwide," he said.

"There was something like 89 categories involved and beers from all over the world."

He said Autumn Amber was a top fermented drop featuring aromatic Bavarian hop varieties that was best enjoyed with red meat and served at a temperature of about 4 degrees Celsius.

Cascade produces about 5,000 cartons and 800 50-litre kegs annually of the brew, supplying specialty venues around Australia.

Western Australia's Matilda Brewing Company won silver in the German-style pale wheat beer section with its Redback beer, while Hahn Special Vintage, produced by Sydney-based Lion Nathan Australia, took bronze in the old ale category.

Howdy. I'm in Duncraig, WA.
I just got a P800.
I used to have a T68 with T68i software, but that's been passed on to my mum.

anyone know a good place to get a 128mb memory stick duo?
everywhere i have been sells it for too much. eg harvey norman sells a sandisc 128mb for $130. and a 64mb sony for $165!!!
the rrp for a 64mb sony is $75, and for a 128mb sony is $109.
I'm gonna look at megamart and sony central tomorrow.
If harvey norman still has their price match, i'll get them to order a 128mb sony in, and then i get it for the cheaper price, less 10% of the difference.
megamart does the same thing, but only 5% i think. and it depends if they even sell it.
sony central should have it, and it should be at rrp.
downtown duty free have it for $99.95 ex tax. so with gst it'll be $110.
if worst comes to worst, i'll get it from there.
they are just so damn hard to find
i don't want to order off ebay, coz then i still have to pay postage, and i'd rather pay a little extra and get one from perth.
i'm not in a big rush, but i would like to have one in 2 or 3 weeks at most.

Posted by secret_squirrl
You can get them from Harris Technology, In WA they have a store in Osborne Park, they sell the 128MB MS Duo for $107, you can also order online with them if thats too far away from you.

Hello, I'm an irish man but living in sydney.
Just bought a T610 last week, am going to get it flashed to get rid of all that nasty vodafone stuff.
Just happen to work for optus and there is a service center in the building so hopefully one of the technicians in there will flash it for me.

From Manchester now in Sydney - Northern Beaches. Proud three day owner of a P900 at $0 courtesy of Telstra and a bit of smooth talking be me and my mate.

Posted by masseur
well done! and I know as a Telstra customer myself that is not easy

just don't get any sand in the cracks (of the P900)!

Posted by tomtom
Was so close to getting the p800 from telstra with the same technique, but i was just short 5 points to be approved, I headed home to get my copy of my birthcert but when i cam back there was a different guy working and he informed me that due to my visa expiry date i could not get it. Bugger.
The other guy did not mind about the exp date.
So I went and bought a T610 from vodafone which i cannot get unbranded now.

Posted by Skills2802
question for masseur - somewhere on this site I found a post from you on how to alter the delay period before the call gets passed to voice mail. I've tried the code;

**61*07973100123*11*30# - where 30=the delay period in seconds, 5 to 30 increments in 5.

it 'accesses the network' then returns a command error - any clues?

Thanks mate

Posted by masseur
to be honest I have never tried it myself but the number after **61* doesn't look like an aussie number (looks like a philipines number actually) and I recall the number there should be a mailbox number of some kind for yourself and the post you are referring to gave some info on how to get the number that should be used there.

remind me where that post is (saves me searching) and I'll give it a go
