The title sounds daft, but still. let me lay out the origin of my question. This afternoon I drove home after working in Milton Keynes and did not feel going through the roadworks on the M25 so I had my GPRS contaption map the shortest route avoiding Motorways.
Anyway, I was driving in the middle of nowhere in the countryside in a hilly area when I lost my mobile signal with 02. On the phone the operator logo was replaced with "Emergency Calls Only".
Now, how can I make an emengency call when I have no signal to my normal provider? Or, do you then make use of any available operator's signal (Vodafone, Orange etc.)?
Any comments?

okay so where does the call go to ? To the local police station or something or to some international emergency center or somewhere else ?

SIM means subscriber identity module and it simply identifies you to the phone company (via the SIM cards serial number combined with the phone IMEI I believe)
it doesn't actually make the phone work, as such

all phones by international law much have the ability to call the emegency services when switched on/plugged in.

and when they keys are locked too I believe, certainly SE phones have that capability

but how??
if i dont have a sim in my phone i can still call 999/911/112
but how the hell on earth that can happen? where does the call go and how? surely my call has to get connected to a network? and that isnt going to happen without my having a sim card in the phone!
only way it would work is if the emergency services has an network?

i have an old t61d (no sim card even) and i can still make emergency calls with it, and its pretty old. as long as its charged, it will work
this had me thinking... the normal for emergency is 911 (in the USA anyway, idk about other countries) so why do 08 and 112 make emergency calls??
and the t630 can make emergency calls while the keys are locked btw
edit: @fatreg, your sim identifies who you are... you know how phones can be unlocked right? then it can work on any network (network that ur sim is on) well when u make an emergency call, its like its automatically unlocked for those numbers, so it will work on all networks. thats the best way i know how to explain it.
when u dial 911 from a payphone, or house phone where does it go? to the local police station, thats where it does when u make an emergency call.

All /// Ericsson & NOW the SE onez undo the keylock if you press. 112 and call/ yes button. THAT is the orignal Intl emerg code. As said by all here- at some locations operators (unlike here in India) let the signal connect to some desk of therez, irrespective of who's service you on. #
Goes w/o saying, it wont work under 'No Network' situation. That is, some (anybody's) signal has to be there AND that carrier should be considerate enough.

eastcoast you will be able to call 991 and 999 too!
but i wanna know HOW!
its like a free call, so does that mean i can piggy back a normal call on it and get free calls for the rest of my life??

thats what i have ALWAYS thought about... im suprised noone has tried to edit the software, and add phone numbers instrad of the emergency numbers, and make free calls... i wonder about that. i knwo it is illigal, but still.

still makes no sense to me!
ive got here in front of me a NK 7600 no sim and it would appear i am wrong
if i try and phnoe 999 with no sim in, it says its attemting the call then says theres no network coverage!
which i can understand. but im sure ive seen it working before.
ahh might try me a bit of moto hex editing and get the emergetny numbers changed!

Wont you also need to hack the carrier's systems instead ? Coz the damn servers should treat the number you want to dial as an Emergency num. As such, there has to be someone hand in glove let the sys fool to treat other nums as emergency & let you connect to them !!

i dont know too much about it, but ive heard of ways to charge calls to another phone using the same reception tower...or something like that...search for cellphonehacks in google..

As far as i know:
when you wana make a emergency call any operator in range will/should allow you to make that emergency call.
It goes to your nearest emergency centre no. like the police station.
And yes the call is free.
But the thing is that not all operators support this service, in order to prevent their network usage for free.
Like in delhi(INDIA), i think only the HUTCH network allows to you make the emergency calls.
It can be taken something as a free public-service the network operator provides.
Hope that helps
