i just want to ask if anyone knows when the E.D.G.E will be available here in philippines. coz my 3g phone have this feature but it seems to be useless. i rather buy a new phone without this feature but has a MP3 player. the S.E S700i..... its both 1.3mp camera.

Posted by jplacson
Both Smart and Globe have EDGE, but they are still in beta testing, so I don't know if they offer this openly to the public.

If you're planning to buy a phone with an MP3 player, forget the S700, go for the K750

Posted by goldenapple
use the search...anyway it HAS been around since 6220 came out. though it's transparent meaning it's still called gprs but faster.

Posted by v3xat10n
Gprs is very slow. i want a faster one. ok thanks for the info

@goldenapple
EDGE is no GPRS. GPRS is packetswiched data (using multiple data changels). EDGE is a fast way of getting data by using multiple GSM connections (circuit switched)

Posted by goldenapple
@dragon_fly

i meant that the telecom provides EDGE but labelled GPRS connection..not that they are one and the same.

we have already here its called EGPRS! globe telecom uses ericsson rbs 2206 cabinet enabling EDGE features, all south luzon area has this features. also in metro manila but its nokia system.

Posted by v3xat10n
are you sure??? i think EGPRS is not EDGE.. its means Enhanced GPRS... correct me if im wrong.... edge is enhanced data-rate for gms evolution.

Posted by dragon76ers
@v3xat10n, EDGE is also known as Enhanced GPRS (E-GPRS)

Posted by GPRS
see the difference, use edge phone then connect to your pc or notebook. then browse the internet..

Posted by GPRS
@v3xat10n - GPRS = 115 kilobits per second
EDGE = 384 kilobits per second

3times faster than gprs, although edge can handled 3G. thats why operators are not telling the subscribers that they have edge already, not fully operational.

Smart has EDGE, but selling it as WeRoam Mobile.

Posted by v3xat10n
so, when do you think would it be available to public?

Posted by v3xat10n
hello?

Posted by rj
didnt they say it's available?!

Posted by v3xat10n
can anyone tell me?

Posted by v3xat10n
i asked globe telecom about this, but i didnt get exact info about 3g and EGDE. they didnt even know what 3g means. the custmr svc assistant asked me what is 3g. she said, what? 3D,? ur are using 3D mobile? a 3D brand? hehehe!! i said no... 3g (3rg gen.).... sucks....!!!

You could meet most technophobes at cell phone shops posing as customer service reps. Sucks when they are expected to be as updated as possible about cell phone tech. I hate them. I've had a few of them fired already by complaining incessantly.

Posted by B.J.
magkanu rate ng edge sa smart? sa globe? kung k750 one ko, pwede ko ba paactivate? (meron nga bang edge ang k750? )

Posted by jiminabottle
K750i is not EDGE capable.

Posted by v3xat10n
if you want a 3g phone. buy n6680, 6630, or s.e v800

Posted by arnoldc
Smart's EDGE is available as a Data Service. Subscribe to We Roam Mobile and they'll give you an EDGE/GSM PCMCIA card that you can put into your notebook.

3G should be available by next year from *bleep*..

EDGE is already available from Smart, and I think PLDT WeRoam piggybacks onto this network as well.

Personally, I wouldn't get a 3G phone just yet. If you want one or like one that's already out, go ahead. This is just my choice. No 3G phone has all the features of the P-series yet, so I'm waiting. I wouldn't be able to use the video call capbilities anyway since none of my friends (whom I wanna see anyway) are on 3G, so for me... 3G is useless... and I'd still rather surf via WiFi.

Posted by GOwin
Globesolutions is offering Unlimited GPRS for P1,700k a month (Plus a one time registration fee of 2k). This service competes with PLDT's WeRoam.

They're issuing GC79 cards which includes WiFi and GPRS in the same card - great for older lappies without internal WiFi.

For info, call 219 on your globe HP or 790-1999 on a landline.

Tip: the GC79 doesn't support EDGE/EGPRS. if you like better performance, try to get your hands on an GC83 card.

Hmmm .... choices, choices.

Would you sacrfice bandwith (xDSL/cable) for mobility (e/gprs)?

thats nice.

thanks for the info

please keep this thread alive! ! !

Wow! Very techy.... I only know GPRS.

Posted by dlreyes
Why use EDGE if 3G is now available from Broadband Philippines through their EVDO service.... the service is even cheaper than Globesolutions or WeRoam but is only available in 70% of MetroManila by the endof October.

check this out;
http://www.digitalmediaasia.com/default.asp?ArticleID=9667
it says globe has already tested 3G but does anyone knows if this is already implemented and how much do they charge for 3G services?

Posted by dlreyes
They are still in the testing stage as demonstrated during the ad congress but I don't think its commercially available yet.

Posted by dan173
Yes, I believe this is only testing/demo. The frequencies assigned to them is for testing/demo purposes and the NTC will only award licenses next year. So until them, no commercial service

@ dlreyes

3G is an ITU standard specification and the new EDGE air interface has been develop specifically to meet the bandwidth needs of 3G.

3G will work over wireless air interface such as GSM, TDMA, and CDMA.

The status of EDGE as to if it is 2G or 3G depends on implementation. While Class 3 and below EDGE devices clearly are not 3G, class 4 and above devices perform at a higher bandwidth than other technologies conventionally considered as 3G (such as 1xRTT). With a maximum bandwidth of 230k at Class 10, EDGE transcends both common 2G and 3G definitions.

Now going back to the topic (EDGE in the Philippines), actual results would reflect a Class 3 and even lower implemntation of both Globe and Smart and therefore not yet considered as 3G (at least here in the Philippines).

Globe is also testing their so called 3G during the SEA Games.

Posted by gtjr
they better have the unlimited gprs before going to that 3G thing

Posted by Salisbury_Steak
I think a saw a billboard on EDSA saying SMART 3G... sa may Rob pioneer ata. I'll check again later or tomorrow.
