Anyone got pictures of their own communicator(s)?

the 9000i is awesome, i was always a big fan of the communicator keyboard, the new feels good aswell although i would say that that the button were a little better on 9210.....

anyway i hope i could do that some years from now with an old p800 and p1150

but i'll need to get a new p800 as i dropped it some time ago, about three floors.... :s

anyway i was going a little off, nice mate!

Photos were taken with my trusty P900, I think the 9500 camera (also VGA) is alot better though to be honest, like this one of my second son, George, born on saturday 28th May.

Ah! Where I belong. The 9500 is my first commie. Had always wanted the 9210/i but the lack of GPRS kept me off.

I'll post some pixes of my 9500 as well as pixes taken with it later in the day.

@JohnM: Congrats on the arrival of your baby

Posted by Prom1
@JohnM; Congrats on your new baby, he looks like a strapping boy ;Gemini. 4 days after my birthday. When mine was born I was humbled & elated.

Nice comparison of the 9000i; had no idea that it was ever made. Man its huge! What was made 1st, the 9000i or the Ericsson R380??

Posted by Dragonfly_TP
all the communicators! I can make live pix of it too, but I forgot to bring my digicam.

Here's a pix of my 9500 sitting majestically on my desktop mouse pad. The pic was taken with a pal's Sendo X

@prom1 - cheers! yeah its a bit of a handful with 2 boys but well worth it!

@fatreg - its on o2 contract so simfree! the 9000i was on orange but i unlocked it. the orange branding is only the square logo on the bottom corner, other than that it's all nokia!

@AYA - got fax on it mate, o2 setup 3 numbers for me, 1 for calls, data, sms, mms, 1 for data (though it can be used for voicecalls and sms), 1 for fax (this again can be used for voicecalls and sms). So l have 3 different numbers on 1 SIM! Its awsome bit of kit! Might try and see if the 9000i can fax with my 3 number SIM in it. Anyone in uk want to fax me? PM for number, cheers!

Posted by OluYom
@JohnM: Great. I presume you've given it a go and it works. Apart from setting up the 3 lines on your SIM, was there any config done on your Commie?

My SIM has 3 lines just like yours - 1 Voice, 1 fax, and the 3rd data. But still have been unsuccessful sending out fax. My network says it should work as it is though.

i miss my 9500 . may have to buy another one me thinks

Posted by OluYom
@HigherGround: What happened to your 9500 in the first place?

Posted by Dicky Snapples
i sold it,stupidly

Posted by OluYom
@HigherGround: I can see how you mean. I'm not sure there's anything humanly possible that would make me part with this baby. It does everything I always wanted my mobile to be capable of doing.

If it really meets your needs, do get another one.

Posted by JohnM
@AYA- no mate, it worked automatically for fax when the extra 2 lines were activated on my sim. If l use GSM data instead of GPRS, it uses the data number so I can receive calls while a data connection is in progress, though l always use GPRS as it's faster anyway. Put settings from the WLAN in from works WLAN, wow unbelievable with a 1Mbit connection, broadband on a phone! I'm loving my 9500!

I thought nobody has a 9500 except for me and fatreg.

BTW, fatreg, I thought I'm the only one in the world who has the white cover, so I took it off. But now I'm going to put it on in the lunch break !

@JohnM: I am still trying to figure out what I did wrong. Both the fax and data lines on my SIM have been activated but it didn't work when I put the SIM in.

I'll take another look when I feel up to it. It's not a big issue with me because I dont use that SIM in my 9500 by default. Just curious, that's all.

The pix below is that of my wife and I and was taken with my 9500 two weekends ago at some friends' wedding ceremony.

@HigherGround: congrats!

BTW, looking at your 9500 homepage reminds me that I customized mine. I kept the background image but removed the Nokia button-link and logo; then integrated links to all my most frequently-used web and WAP sites on the page.

When my homepage loads, i'm ready to go anywhere (almost)

I'll post the screenshot shortly.

cool, could be me being stupid but,how did you do that

Posted by OluYom
@HigherGround: Here's a mini manual

1. Open Internet.
2. Menu -> Save -> Save as
3. Save the page in any folder of your choice and give it any name you want.
4. Using File Manager, highlight this saved page
5. Menu -> Rename. Change the filename AND EXTENSION to anythingelse.txt (a text file). The file name must be different from the original name you saved it with.
5. Now open it. It will open in Documents as a text file (hope you can handle basic HTML)
6. Edit the HTML of the document to reflect what you want the page to look like and to include whatever hyperlinks you want.
7. Menu -> Save as -> Name it say "Home.html" (again, it can go in any folder).
8. Click on it to have it load in the browser.
9. With your browser open and showing this new page -> Menu -> Tools -> Settings -> Home page address. The top side button says "Use current page". Select that and you've got your new homepage.

Everytime you start Internet, or (if you so also set it) everytime you open a new page, this is the default page that loads.

Here's what my customized homepage looks like:

Posted by OluYom
I re-designed my commie homepage again yesterday night to make it more personal. You'll notice how all the original images and background are now gone. You'll notice my black face and white teeth and then defined columns of favourite Web and WAP links.

I prefer this one, methinks

Has anyone figured out how to save images that are not hyperlinked on the 9500?

How about highlighting a link to see the properties and/or copy the link shortcut?

I used to be able to do these on my old P800 because of the touchscreen/stylus combination. On my commie, no such luck yet.

Any tips, anyone?

Posted by Dicky Snapples
hold shift, then click the mouse type button down, then it will give you the option to save it

@HigherG: Thanks a million. Ignorance is such a terrible thing!

Does the 9000 have symbian for mp3

Posted by JohnM
@AYA- any luck with faxing on your 9500 yet mate?

Can anyone help me with WLAN, we have a WLAN connection at work, but its been saying recently l need a WEP key, help!

Posted by Dicky Snapples
youll have to ask your IT guys(or whoever installed the WIFI) as the wep Key would have been set up at the time of installation.

its to stop any old person logging into it and using it for free.

although its surprising how many hotspots ive found without WEP keys!

Posted by JohnM
Cheers DS, might have to go searching for hotspots when l'm out and about today. Yes the WLAN at work was ok when I first got my 9500, maybe it was put in place because they noticed someone using it?! There are 2 laptops at work that use the WLAN, would l be able to find the WEP key on 1 of them, if so where? They both use XP professional. Cheers.

@JohnM: Yes! The network whose SIM I use on my 9500 has launched fax. I subscribed yesterday and was told it will be active on my line in 2 business days. I know someone else on the same network who uses the fax service on his 9500. He says its a smooth ride and no complications.

So, I am waiting for it to get active and have a go! Once fax is active on my line, my 9500 indeed becomes my one-stop mobile office solution

@DS: Just curious; why the name change?

i want a 9500 now, expecialy that i will be getting 8mb wifi at home, need to put it to good use.

what is the goin rate for a used 9500 in the uk?

Posted by Wirral Bagpuss
Tis tempting but i am holding out for a P1000 !

Posted by JohnM
Guys get yourselves a 9500, you wont regret it!

Posted by aff
im still wondering if the 9000i has symbian or if it can download mp3 player im being ignored

Posted by OluYom
@aff: Sorry, but I don't have much info on the 9000i, but I don't think Symbian as we know it today was in existence then. I also doubt if any 3rd party apps can be installed on a device that old

@JohnM: Amen to that! Honestly, I think that most people react negavitely to the 9500 more on perception than reality.

For example, almost everyone I know who had dissed the 9500 "because its just too big" are pleasantly surprised when they see mine in real life. Their first reactio often is "This thing is really not that big!"

It fits comfortably in my trouser pockets (though anyone would have to be crazy to walk around with one that way).

Others just want an entertainment device, and that is what the 9500 is not.

Anyone who has serious work to do on the move and is not interested in lugging a notebook will definitely give the 9500 serious thought.

Posted by OluYom
Another question: I'd love to see the URL of some links before I click to visit (sort of like checking link properties). Anyone figured out how to do that yet?

Posted by aff
so a clear answer is no to symbian

Posted by JohnM
@aff - as far as l know, l cant download/install 3rd party applications to my 9000i, like AYA said, probably with the age of the device, it doesnt utilise symbian OS (or at least the symbian OS we are more familiar with these days). I'll boot up the 9000i later to see if it is at all possible and what OS it runs. Do you use a 9000i at present?

@AYA - my sentiments exactly, l find the 9500 perfect for me, still think my P900 is a great device, just the 9500 is in a different league. I've also always been more than impressed at the capabilities of the communicator range.

Posted by aff
thanks and if you want more info just go to gsmarena.com there is a thing on it but it says it has an os?

Posted by OluYom
@aff: I googled a bit and came up with Nokia's support page for the 9000i. Its here.

I also read an article that says the OS is called GEOS 3.0 (whatever that is!). But its certainly not Symbian as we know it.

Nokia's site confirms that even the 9000i's successors, the 9110 and 9110i both run an embedded AMD 486 processor and GEOS operating system.

well, here's a pic of my 9500...

Posted by JohnM
@Skrue - like the wallpaper on your communicator, where did you get it, I'd love that!

Posted by OluYom
@skrue: I have something similar - Windows XP wallpaper on my 9500. But yours is full-screen! How did you do that?

I'd sure love to have my Desk look like that! Any show?

Posted by JohnM
How do you change the colour scheme or make your own? I'm assuming thats how Skrue has full screen XP wallpaper.

Posted by elshaddai
Has anyone got the London AZ map on their 9500/9300 ? how good and fast is it?

http://www.handango.com/ampp/[....]p;sectionId=0&productId=110860

Posted by OluYom
I read a tutorial on AAS showing how to skin the 9500 (thanks to skrue for the info). Man! Its a lot of work.

I think I'll just stick with what I have till further notice. Maybe when I have the time (and guts!) someday.....

Posted by OluYom
I am still looking for a way to check the shortcut on links before I click to follow it.

So far, everything I have tried have not worked. Anyone wants to do the honour?

My network is being embarassingly slow getting fax activated on my line. Its been a week and two days now since I completed all paperwork and made my payment. Sigh
