Are you using Firefox? I also clicked on Accept (the terms and conditions) and bugger all happened. I apeared to be looking at a blank screen, but if you scroll up there is some text there. Just click on "Continue" (I think) and the download should start.

Good luck.

See for all those people who stayed with Orange, You Can have a K750i with Nice Icons. You just have to have faith in the Future !!

The phone is so much faster and the camera is alot better in the dark, shots are clearer. Crashes have stopped and i dint loose one setting. You do get the ability to change the start up logo now.

I have no problems in connecting to GPRS or Email. I have also noticed that the Wap icon have lost there orange tint and gone back to normal.

The volume in the handset is clearer and louder too.

I dont think this update was a main one, just a one to stop the phone from crashing and to keep cusotmers and networks happy.

One bug that still remains is the loss of shortcut settings. However, the standby crash bug seems to have been fixed. My phone crashed twice in the first 12 hours of having it. It hasn't crashed once since the update.

There was a response on a different thread that seemed to suggest that SE had pulled the plug on the update for Orange phones. I hope this is not the case as I am busy persuading my wife to get the same phone on Orange and then debrand it...

The Sony ericsson Update is still working for orange users. I spoke to SE yesterday and they told me to go to the website to update

Have completed an update this morning, no problem with new icons

Also if you are having problems with the update service, use Windows System restore to restore the PC prior to the installation of PC Suite and the phone.

When you reinstall, it will prompt you for the drivers for the USB Flash driver. Just make sure you have downloaded it first! I made the same mistake (it installed itself without the drivers) and wouldn't work.

hmmmm.... it looks as though SE have stopped Voda users from updating the firmware.

I just tested it, and it came back with an "update prohibited for this provider" message.

Posted by DVS
I also was not permitted to update my Orange phone.

Bastards.

Glad I got my phone upgraded before they stopped it. Only problem is my wife wants one now, but hates the Orange branding. If I have done the update once, are the update files stored on my pc? Could I run a manual update?

Nope I can't update it either

Thank you for using the Sony Ericsson Update Service!

That sucks. I'm getting mine in the post now and only ordered it because I thought I would be able to update online and remove the Orangness.

Thank you very much Orange.

Posted by DVS
Has anyone tried the recovery option instead of the update?

I am trying it now but it has been running for about 20 minutes. All it says is 'Please Wait...........'

I don't mind waiting, just hope it works!

Posted by schneil
Yeah tried that....

No luck either

"Incorrect use of recovery mode
Recovery mode can be used only if you already have used the Sony Ericsson Update Service in normal mode before.
If your device is operational you should remove and reinsert the battery, then Start over.
If your device is non-operational, please contact your nearest service location."

Would an se service centre do a software upgrade??

Posted by DVS
I also get the same error (after waiting for ages).

Called Sony Ericsson and they said that they software should never have allowed upgrades so those who managed to upgrade were lucky.

Apparently there is a Sony Ericsson Service Centre is South London which should be able to update the phone. Might wait to see if anyone has cracked it first as I am not sure they will update and Orange handset.

Boy am i glad i chose O2 over Orange yesterday! I was only considering Orange because of the new firmware update.

... although at least i would have the phone this month if i'd gone with orange!

Posted by eeperman
Yep, spoke to SE as well and they confirmed that you can no longer update Orange handsets. If you take it to an SE centre then they will upgrade the firmware for you, but you will not lose the Orange branding.

I wonder how long it will take for unlocking services to update for the K750i. It's disappointing that Orange allowed some to update and not others.

AHHHHH!!! Just ordered it from Orange, to get an amazing student deal! Was banking on being able to use a SE update! My friend has a completely unbranded version, and its the Shizzle!

Really wish they'd leave things the way they were supposed to be! Atleast all the functionality is there. Will be getting it debranded as soon as possible. My brother does electronic engineering, and managed to reverse engineer the sony update software, to trick it into debranding his sony P900. He says it may be possible to do this for the K750i. However this nolonger works for p900, as SE have changed their security check.

My bro sez its best to go to an unlocking shop in london or somewhere. Hopefully it won't be too long before they can accomodate us!

mocara,

I think it was more a case of some of us getting through before Orange closed the loophole. I don't know why they do this: I don't really think they can argue consumer protection since it is only a small group of die-hards (i.e us) who have the know-how and inclination to update the phone.

Anyhoo, I seem to remember that there was a manual update option on the site. This was to be used if your phone was dead and you had previously updated it. Which leads me to think that if you have updated it in the past then maybe the updated firmware or a requirement for it is still on my pc. Maybe I can still unlock other K750s! Still, I'm not about to test it on my phone in case it goes back to Orange branding...

I took it to a SE centre and they tried installing unbranded firmware but it wouldn't work. SE haven't released any updates to the Orange firmware - so a wasted journey for me!

Well,

Mine is arriving 2morro morning! So I shall try a few different tricks. God knows I might be lucky, and it come unbranded

Anyone know if they managed to unbrand theirs on SEUS, if another update will rebrand the phone! I hope not!

Thanks

I contacted Davinciteam today, asking if they would soon be able to unbrand/unlock the K750i, and got this reply:

"> Will you be getting a firmware to debrand K750i soon?

firmware we already have, logger not fully ready.
Communication interface completely different, but possible during
one week all problems must be solved"

Sounds promising. Also how do you find out the CDA number of your phone, and does anyone have a CDA for the Generic UK SE K750?

As you need to update this with your davinci flash, so in future you can use the good old SEUS which is of course free.

Thanks

James

Here's some questions!

I've got 2 lines set up on my orange contract. If you've flashed your phone to the unbranded firmware does it still recognise the 2 lines??

Also if its got unbranded firmware in, does that mean the phone is unlocked?

Posted by darrengf
I was told by Orange no. They ask SE to slightly modify the phone to accept 2 lines on SE phones. This is why the K700i had no shortcuts. The 2 lines took this space on the phone in the firmware memory.

Also if you chaps updated the phone with SE update over the last few days and the icons went back to the norm generic icons. I am aware that the icons will revert back to the Orange ones on the next firmware update.

The update released wasnt Aproved by Orange and the Orange asked SE to block the update for a temp measure. Thanks

Will an unbranded phone continue to recognise the Orange voicemail alert system?

Also, the SE tech guy said that unbranding will invalidate any warranty I have. Is this likely to be a problem? The phone will still work with Orange, won't it?

Posted by darrengf
Updating your phone with a different firmware will not invalidate your warranty if your phone is hard ware related.

No you will still received the normal Orange voice mail system. This is standard in all SE software

Orange are lying about the line 2 (ALS - alternate line service) information - ALS is included as part of something called CPHS which pretty much all phones support out of the box (although not necessarily switched on). So for Orange to tell you they modified the firmware for this purpose is rubbish - a vanilla K700i would happily support ALS.
They modified the phones firmware and removed features such as customisable shortcuts and the "more" menu because they wanted to replace it with their own rubbish like extra camera buttons or the obstructive Orange homescreen.

Not suprised one bit that the Orange icons will be back with their next firmware update - it unlike Orange these days to actually do something useful like removing their nasty icons. Always had a doubt that this firmware update had slipped through the net at Orange.

Posted by darrengf
Yes i was most shocked wheni got the nice icons back. I wish they would just leave the phone alone. This would stop half of the bugs with them and let SE concentrate on fixing the faults more quickly and efficiently.

Let people choose what they want. People would spend more and use the phone more.

Ive been looking into the way the update service works with a view to finding some way of fooling it into thinking you have a generic unbranded k750i.

I've written a program which intercepts the communication between the flasher program and the ericsson servers.

What I need now is a few users who would be willing to run this piece of software and send me the results. A few users from each network and a mixture of branded/unbranded phones.

With any luck it should be possible to identify enough about the protocol to fool it into updating our branded phones.

I am attaching images of the initial query and response packets sent from the flasher software when I attempt to flash my orange branded phone to demonstrate the sincerity of this post.

Send me a private message if you are interested in helping out, stating your network, branded/unbranded, the current version of your firmware and a contact email address.

only had 1 response so far. still looking for help.

Hey guys

See post above and try and help him out - I have.

Posted by Phantasm4489
thanks, ive had enough responses for now.

Didnt manage to learn a great deal from the data.
It seems to be the same no matter what firmware or network you are running.

Am going to wait till another firmware update is released and see how that affects the data.

I am also in the process of decompiling the flasher program

Hi,
I'm sorry if this has already been covered or anything, but you say the menu is different on the Orange K750i to on the normal K750i. I prefer the normal phone's menu, but if I buy it on Orange, is there any way of changing the menu from the Orange one to the normal one?
Thanks!
