K750 / W800 Firmware Overview

I updated to R1BC002 Monday night and then had a problem yesterday. I was on a call for 25-30 minutes [sitting on my couch] and at one point the phone cut out on me. I was unable to get a call to go through and the person tried to call me right back 3 times but each time they went straight to voicemail. I had 3 or 4 out of 5 bars so I don't think it was a signal issue. I had to actually call back the person via a land-line to get through.

Some time later I made a call on the phone with no problem.

[edit] I haven't had the opportunity to make another long call yet but I am worried.

I have never seen this before, has anyone else?

I think its really related to Frimware problem....

Posted by jasond
I'd say more the fact that you were sitting on your couch.

@uink, I believe those gaps that you see in games are because the games is made to run at a specific screen ration (possibly designed primarily for Nokia screens, and not SE's). On earlier firmware’s the screen was filled with black, but I think as an improvement, SE decided to fill any gaps on the screen unoccupied by the game with your default background image, or background colour. This is more obvious when running a game at a minimal screen resolution.

Try it. If it succeeds then the answer is yes. If it fails than the answer is no. SORRY to sound like a prick but, if you read through this entire post you'll find so many stupid questions that could be self answered! What do people want? A magic answer from someone saying "yes there it is 'cause I said so". I'm surprised people don't seek confirmation that the sky is blue! I know, people will bag me for this, but please use just .00001% of your brains before you post stupid (and quite often repeated) questions. Just a little research - using the search option (or even Google) - and a little bit of common sense would answer half the repeated questions you see in these posts. For me, when I see someone submit a post stating that they have been successful upgrading a w800 to the latest F/W, then i'll give it a try rather than posting stupid questions asking other uninformed people if an update is available. Think about it, if you try and are advised by the SE update service that you have the current version, then the answer is - no update available for your phone. SIMPLE!!!!!!

Two people by now, told me they updated their phones to R1BC002 succesfully with AMERICA_2 customization, but I tried many times without any success (SEUS says there's no update available)...why I can't update my phone!!!???

AMERICA_2 with CDA 102337/16 R6A

@alexl22

The customization has nothing to do with the upgrade, SEUS looks at your main firmware, EU1, EMEA6, etc.. The customization stays..

what MAIN firmware do you have?

Posted by marc1982
It's about time they released this update for the W800i! Hope it's there soon... Let me try and report back asap

My main firmware is EU1, looking at this string:
prgCXC 125952_EU_1_CL

Successful R1BC002 FW update of my K750i yesterday.

I'm in Canada, on the Rogers network. I now have the same software info as new666, except for the identifier.

Instead of prgCXC125952_EU_1_CL, I have the Hong Kong version, prgCXC125955_HONG_KONG_CL

Everything seems to work just as before; I don't actually notice any difference with any of the issues previously mentioned in this thread. I haven't taken any pictures since the upgrade, so I can't speak to that, although the camera SW version is the same, so I don't expect any change there.

Just one more note: I also had that glitch where the phone wouldn't update. I was trying to update on a laptop where I previously updated the phone to R1AA008. The SEUS started up, updated itself, and lauched the starting phase, but I could never get by the main 6 step page where it says to turn off the phone, remove the SIM card, reload battery, etc.

I got around the problem by simply installing the SE software on another machine (Win 2k this time) and it worked fine. I expect I could have also got around the problem by uninstalling and reinstalling the USB driver, as I believe that is the only other possible point of failure in the process.

Anyway, I'm up to date. I also really wish there would have been a "flight mode" option added. But really, it makes sense that new firmware releases are restricted to bug fixes. It's the only way SE would even have a chance at ending the new FW creation process for any particular model...

Fist off all i did ask you personaly nothing, and i didnt expect nothing from u as i see you have only 37 post.
And dont offend peaople this is Discussion forum and u can ask and answer if u have any help for the others and not for answering and telling the others that they are stupid and dont use their brain.

OK people... let's try and keep it civil here... Firmware updates are highly dependant on whether you have a branded or unbranded phone. The unbranded ones get their updates first, but the branded ones have to wait for the carrier under whose logo they are registered to approve the update. For example, my phone is a k750i with orange branding and I have to say I was among the last people able to upgrade to R1AA008. And this happened only two weeks before the appearance of the newest firmware. So I'll have to wait another two months at least until I am able to upgrade my firmware, but this doesn't bother me much. I hope I succeeded in making my point.

1) You posted a question in a public forum so I responded.

2) I have only 37 posts because I generally read and search the forums before I post. Feel free to check my posts. I think you'll find the majority are sensible responses or observations.

3) I did not intend to offend you. If you read the post carefully you'll see it is directed at the general population. I was just venting some anger at seeing so many people asking the same "is there an update yet" questions. It like kids in the back of car asking "are we there yet, are we there yet, are we there yet.....) It ruins the forum. How many times do you see people say "use the search option". Too often. I find this "stupid" - but not in an offensive manner. If I did the same thing and it was pointed out I would laugh and say to myself 'that was stupid'. Not really offensive at all when you look at it that way. And, I don't see the harm in advising people to use their brains.

4) You sending me an abusive and attacking PM is just childish and gutless, really! People beware - This one bites.

yeah guys, this is just a firmware thread. no reason to trade insults.

yeah people should read past posts to see if their questions can be answered.
but also sometimes it can't because the answer might be change real-time.

Updated my f/w to R1BC002 two days ago.
IMO, I like this new one.

As stated in the 1st page of this forum, taking picture is quite faster now.
The background / hissing noise in low volume while playing media player has been reduced quite good (still can hear a little noise though).
The MP3 sound is quite richer (it depends on the MP3 file quality and the bitrate), I can hear some melodies that were not heard in previous f/w.

Above all improvements, the "low reminder volume" is still exist and it's quite annoying for me as I often use calendar/task to make some tasks reminder.

Over all, I appreciate the SE's effort to improve its f/w.
Good work SE!!

This has happend to me 15-20 times since i upgraded. I am sick of this firmware problems. The phone cuts after 1, 5, 10, 20, or 30 minutes. Time doesn't matter really. I just loose the connection. I have never had this problem with the k750i which i bought last summer.

Now i really want to go back to the oooold R1N035 wich worked perfectly for me. But i don't like to use davici.

Two last firmwares really messes with the calling function.

1. Bad hissing sound (now gone, thank god!)
2. Cuts phone calls whenever the phone feels like it. Annoying, annoying and really annoying.

I miss all my nokia phones only for the funtion to make a call.

Please everyone that has this problem, shout out!

so has the w800 firmware come out yet?

Posted by manilabynight
I noticed that after the upgrade on my K750i, certain sounds/volumes have reduced dramatically.

Take for example the voice dialling function where you are asked to speak commands after the beep while you are initially setting up your voice commands -> I noticed that even if I speak loudly and clearly into the phone, the playback is unusually weak and I have a very difficult time in hearing it. Even the "beep" that signals you to speak the command to get recorded is very, very faint! How many times had I had to repeat the process because I missed hearing the "beep" sound.

However, once your voice commands are recorded, the playback is clear and loud enough.

Anybody notice this on their phones after the upgrade??

I'm wondering if the degradation on the volume of some of the alerts is caused by the improvement on the volume quality and disappearance of the hissing sound on low volume calls? Kinda like you trade off one aspect for an improvement on the quality of the other.

Tried to update my W800 to the latest firmware.... but said "no updates available". Anxiously waiting for SE to post the latest firmware. Calls getting cut in the middle sure sounds dangerous. Hope its fixed in the firmware for W800.

Overall I love SE for their good work in the firmware division.

I only hope they do something about the signal reception of the W800 is higher. Maybe there could be an option to increase the reception of the phone at the expense of battery or something.

Posted by rockygali
most probably.. since we didnt change any hardware inside the device... the update should be based on the existing hardware and kinda like juggle a bit of this and of that... kinda weigh things out... nothing extravagant to add (well logically speaking) just tweaking... thats why priorities had to be adjusted.. yeah, good observation.

i also noticed some tweaking done with the radio.. yea altho the volume was tweaked up a bit. but guys correct me if im wrong i think is the RDS option available in the R1N and R1AA versions? or im just feelin kinda silly here?

about the calls being cut-off mid-way, umm havent experienced that with my K750.. does this happen everytime you call and takes you quite sometime?

coz ive tried calling like a conversation of around 25-30mins... havent been cut-off... are you guys listening to music by the time the call was made? or running sumthin else inside the phone? or maybe using bluetooth? can sumone step by step describe how the cut-off was experienced...

much thanks...

In my case, the low volume of reminders began from f/w R1AA008 (I upgraded from R1A044 -> R1AA008 -> R1BC002 ) where background noise was one of the bugs.

Well, I'm sorry if I did not word it right but my W800's fine. Does not drop calls. I was just mentioning the problems posted earlier and would sure not want that to happen in the upcoming firmware for W800.

Just as manilabynight says its all a matter of tradeoff and choices taken by SE to fine tune the product to the general population. Nokia concentrates more in the phone function of the product and so excels in the field of signal strength and does poorly in features. SE chooses not to concentrate too much in the signal strength issues for the sake of battery life and distributes points gained there for other features like a cool interface.

Maybe there will soon be a time where we have several options choosing a firmware or operating system for our phones. or maybe I'm asking for too much

its nice to hear that the hiss sound is gone while playing music in the new firmware, i am still on R1NA005, waiting for the update for w800i, anyways all I want to know is has that static noise/glitch while changing tracks been eliminated completely, i dont know whether it has been mentioned but just for a clarification rather than ppl bombarding with "use the search button" . thanx

Last night, I encountered one static noise/glitch while the media player changed track.
It's the first encounter since I upgraded to R1BC002 2 days ago.
But it seems an intermittent issue.

Posted by rockygali
about the clicking or glitching sounds in between tracks as others might have said that can be found on the previous firmwares... i say i might have experience such and AFAIK i also opened that issue long before. anyway, after every updates (currently i have R1BC002) i always do a refresh copies (recopy mp3 files again) of my files.. and by doing so i have (i think) eliminated that clicking soundz in between trax.

however, others have opened this topic about a lousy media player while playing some trax at a certain time, the media player would just simply go off, meaning STOP. then others added about their phone restarting... fairly enuff, ive experiend this phenomenon last night. while listening to music and strolling on the mall, the K750 is in my pants pocket, then suddenly i heard a slight *kzzzttt* (as the sound of the word might imply) after a track, then i failed to hear the next trak so i check my phone and found out the media player icon was missing from the tray. tho my phone didnt restart. its just that the player suddenly died on me. crazy...

i hope others will continue posting their other side of the story...

cheers peeps!

Posted by scorpiosb
if the static noise has been minimized to a certain extent, its a good update then, but the media player goin off, i am not sure, maybe others can brief it out more, i havent experienced it on the w800.

Posted by AlfBaxter
The static noise is, IMHO, no different at all in the new FW. I have some albums on my 1GB card with no noise at all in between tracks (i.e. no crackling, glitches etc.). On these albums, it doesn't matter how many times I switch between tracks, there's no noise. On other albums, there is always noise (the same noise) when changing between certain tracks. (This is true for music transferred before and after FW update.) The noise also seems to come in before the end of the track in some cases, as it fades out - then stops briefly but is there again as the next track fades in.

This would seem to suggest it's a hardware issue rather than a software glitch - either a problem with the phone reading from certain memory locations, or fragmentation of the card memory, or somesuch.

I try to remind myself it's a phone....

Posted by rockygali
good point. can we also say its a processor thing? nice now i can see the logic behind it.

cheers mate!

can i update it with SEUS?

@jcpsad, Brilliant deduction.

I myself have noticed a few pops and click between songs, but not nearly as much as in previous firmwares (albeit - this may still just be a fluke).

I too am non-plussed about the hissing sound in MP3s, for me I find it to be still there, annoyingly, and about on par with earlier firmwares. I do notice an improvement in general in MP3 quality, however.

@rox, could you explain just why you reload your MP3s? I have done this to some degree, but wonder if it is more superstition than anything else?

The issue we're all facing is more of a nuisance right at the end and the beginning of the tracks. It's as if the audio circuitry re-initialises every time a new track starts playing back, since this thing sounds more voltage-alteration related than anything else...Now that's not necessarily an issue using the in-house provided earphones, but try driving a pair of external powered speakers with one of them 3.5mm adapters...You'll be terrified to experience how these clicks and pops come out...

I do not use bluetooth handsfree. The cut off is not every call, its like every fifth call aproxomatly. And it doesent have to be 25 minutes long. It can be 3 minutes also.
