- BUG: Some phones experience MS Duo corruption after the firmware update. This seems to occur after transferring files over the supplied USB cable. Symptoms include erratic behaviour of the Media Player and problems with the file system such as corrupted or deleted files. Potential fixes are as follows:
- DUO FIX: Do not use the supplied USB cable to transfer files - use a USB memory card reader instead.
- DUO FIX: In Device Manager / Disk Drives select Properties on the Sony Eri Memory Stick and then "Optimize for Performance" on the Policies tab. You will now have to use the "Safely Remove Hardware" in the taskbar before unplugging the phone.
- DUO FIX: Format the memory stick in the phone and then perform a Master Reset / Reset All. Note that this will erase all settings - perform a full backup beforehand. This should be used as a last resort and does not necessarily fix the problem.

Access your phone's firmware information

To find out which firmware revision your phone currently has installed, perform the following:

>*<<*<*

Where < and > represents pushing the joystick left and right respectively.

Sony Ericsson Update Service

Your firmware can be updated through the Sony Ericsson Update Service II (SEUS II). In order to use SEUS you will need to have internet access (preferably Broadband) and attach your phone to your PC via the supplied USB cable.

Note that the required firmware update drivers are present in the following directory after installing SEUS:

C:\Program Files\Sony Ericsson\Update Service\drivers

If you run into problems, you may wish to download and install Sun's Java Runtime Environment separately.

If the firmware update fails part way through, retry the SEUS. If the update consistently fails you will need to perform a Master Reset on your phone. It is likely that you will be required to perform a Reset All - a settings reset is unlikely to do the job. It is recommended to use a tool such as MyPhoneExplorer to create a backup of the data on your phone before performing a Master Reset. Note that you will still lose any games, themes or ringtones present in your phone's memory.

SEUS II will currently install the following firmware revisions for UK phone brands:

K750
Unbranded UK (CDA102338/38) - R1CA021
O2 UK (CDA102338/16) - R1CA021
Orange UK (CDA102338/12) - R1CA021
Vodafone UK (CDA102338/68) - R1CA021
T-Mobile UK (CDA102361/2?) - R1AA008

W800
Unbranded UK (CDA102338/38) - R1BC002
O2 UK (CDA102338/16) - R1AA008
Orange UK (CDA102338/12) - R1AA008
T-Mobile UK (CDA102425/43?) - R1AA008

Unbranded phones from other regions should update to R1BC002 through SEUS II.

Third Party Update Services

Third party firmware updates are available from a number of third party suppliers including DaVinci Team and Wotan Server. The use of third party solutions will theoretically void your warranty (although in practice the phone vendor is unlikely to notice) so should only be used in preference to SEUS for debranding purposes or updating a problematic phone locked out of SEUS by the service provider.

More adventurous members can flash their own firmware using the FAR file manager plugin. An excellent guide to this process has been written for those wishing to try the process themselves.

Firmware Customisation

A plugin for the FAR file manager has been written to give access to the file system of your phone through a standard DCU-60 cable or via a COM port (e.g. Cruiser cable). This plugin allows you to modify the behaviour of your firmware in a number of ways, including the following:
- Remove the SMS storage limit for your phone
- Remove the camera shutter sound
- Remove the DRM limitations found on Vodafone ringtones.
- Add certificates to your phone
- Change / remove default sounds and Java applications on your phone.
- Change the main menu appearance and functionality.
- Finalise a phone after a firmware update by a third party tool.
- Adjust the Photo and Video quality settings of the Camera driver.

See the FAR Plugin thread (and summary thread) for additional information.

Drivers

If you have not yet done so, installing the following drivers will allow your PC to access the media on your phone over the supplied USB cable:

Sony Ericsson D750/K750 USB drivers (K750 only)
Sony Ericsson W800 USB drivers (W800 only)

Follow the driver installation instructions carefully.

Digital Rights Management

Vodafone users should download Sony Ericsson's DRM packager to assign Digital Rights to their MP3s for use on the K750i.

Technical users may also use the FAR Plugin to modify their Customize.xml file and remove DRM checking from their ringtones. Thius can be done by changing the enable-ringtoneplayer-mp3 and enable-ringtoneplayer-aac entries to 'true'.

looks good to me

Thanks Masseur. Updated the first post with your JBenchmark 1 & 2 scores.

keep up the good work

I saw that the original post says R2A044.
Mine is R1A044. Is this old firmware, or what's the deal? I've seen reports from other places with R1A044 as well!

Posted by masseur
I think thats a typo as people have only mentioned R1A044 on Esato

Mine is also R1A044

Posted by staiano
Agreed I have R1A044 as well.

Although my third screen has:

So R1B005 is out somewhere...

Posted by mwarner
Interesting find mb-new! I wonder if it was some sort of unreleased / test firmware firmware?

How do i check the firmware??

Posted by mwarner
@francesco_q
Read the first post.

staiano i remember the string is used to apply branding to the phone if needed, and also check for 3rd party firmware flashes.

My vodafone K750i is version r1c004... is that newer?

Am I going to be able to upgrade it myself or must it go to a service centre? If so are they able / willing to give a non-vodafone version of the firmware (I was able to do this with my Nokia)

I'm brand new to both SE and this phone and am trying to familiarise myself with how it is organised after years of Nokia. Are there any good sites, pages , resources out there that would help?

Many thanks

Posted by max99
try googling

Posted by Sebby
I suspect R1C is a Vodafone-specific version of R1A.

Posted by helenian
i'm on the R1A044 firmware and am gettin the freezing problem whenever the phones goes into standby (clock on screen)...have to remove the battery to unfreeze it..could really do with a new firmware to upload.

Posted by Sebby
I personally have not experienced this problem once. In fact, my only crash was when trying to send a file to my PC via Bluetooth. But, many have reported this problem. Hopefully, the SEUS will be available soon along with a new firmware.

Posted by Phantomlynx
Could someone answer this one:-
"Am I going to be able to upgrade it myself or must it go to a service centre? If so are they able / willing to give a non-vodafone version of the firmware (I was able to do this with my Nokia)"

Ho hum... From page 67 of the K750i Use Manual:

Update Service

With the Sony Ericsson Update Service you can keep
your phone updated with the latest software. When
a new software version is available, you can
download and install it using the provided USB
cable and an Internet-connected computer.

Posted by mwarner
Added R1C004 to the first post.

Posted by k2bk2b
Think current frimware badly needs a new update....
Bugs are very very common n often.

EG: new events - double events for single msg. cant be deleted.
sms Inbox - arrangement screws up sometimes.
phonebook ask to copy contacts from sim when its all there already.....
the massive lag switching from cam to view pics..

Posted by mwarner
Noted that Vodaphone's R1C004 supports DRMed MP3s only.

Posted by flanonthenet
A contributor on another forum claims that he spoke to a Sony Ericsson representative today and was told that a firmware revision is on the way "within two weeks or so."

I really hope that's true and that it addresses the standby freeze (thankfully I haven't had that problem, but it is totally unacceptable) and all the Bluetooth issues.

Posted by darrengf
i hope so too. oh well. some one has to be the first to try the phones and complain. lol

Posted by Subtle
I contacted O2 today regarding an upgrade to the K750i and I was told they will not currently supply anymore K750i's until the new firmware is out. I was quoted the 20th of June with a probable lag time of 3 to 4 weeks after that due to such high demand.

Looks like im just going to have to buy it instead!

Posted by Gobo
I mailed SE support yesterday to ask some questions about bugs I have been having and they replied that the new firmware will be available in week 24.

Posted by mwarner
Week 24, for those who can't be bothered to work it out, is next week (12th - 18th June). The comment by O2 is interesting. I hope there won't be the same SEUS firmware update problems with the K750 as there was with the K700!

Posted by reesy
Anyone any idea if the standby lockups are specific to the voda firmware? I'm getting them, and a friend with an unbranded is fine

Internal Email from o2:

Sony Ericsson K750I

A fault has been identified on the Sony Ericsson K750I that manifests itself in the form of a freezing screen.

The fault is not apparent in all K750I handsets, only in some.

A fix is being worked on by Sony Ericsson and new stock will be available for testing later this week.

If the new stock tests OK we expect the delivery of the new stock be be week commencing 20/06/05.

Where customers are experiencing this problem, removing the battery and replacing it may correct the problem.

However customers that require a replacement should be advised that replacement stock will not be available until week commencing 20/06/05 therefore they can either hold onto their K750I until then or be offered an alternative/refund.

Interesting. That suggests a hardware problem.

It can also suggest that those handsets has the new firmware already installed...

Posted by FuricTrax
WOW.

Don't think I've ever known SE give the date out of new firmware releases?!!

Posted by mwarner
There is only one non-customised firmware that has been released so far for the K750 (R1A044), so it is unlikely that the phones causing trouble are any different from a software perspective.

Having said that, some 'hardware' problems can still be fixable through a firmware update, e.g. if a hardware component was slightly out of spec on some phones the firmware could be modified to compensate. Likewise if the firmware has become corrupt - or even corrupted itself - a firmware update could fix this.

I assume people who are having regular problems have tried a master reset?

Posted by turt
SE Belgium told me there will be a firmware release on JUNE 13TH, available in service centers AND online.

Posted by Sebby
So it would definitely appear that a new version is imminent, which is good. I can't say I've experienced any real problems with my handset so far, though.

Posted by Phantomlynx
I have a voda branded phone. It doesn't suffer from lock ups (so far any way!)

It's software version is R 1C004.

Hope this helps!

By the way, do people think that he earpiece and speaker volumes is liekly to be addressed via firmware upgrade, or is it just a design flaw?

Posted by Sebby
I hope so, it is pretty quiet!

I would have hoped it would be released earlier, but nevermind. I'm away to Spain on Saturday for a good few weeks, and won't have access to the net to update, so will just have to stick it out with the buggy firmware till then..

Posted by Klorin
You never know, might be released before you leave;)

I've just spoken to HAYS (the main repair place in UK) and they've got the new K750 firmware and have updated 3 units so far. He acknowledged that he has been told that most units will require the upgrade but couldn't confirm what the new firmware version is as he didn't have that info on the jobs that have already been done. He was also aware that its not on the online update yet but will be soon.

so thats a little more confirmation of this

Posted by Psykotik
Swish, we so tons of business with Hays so I think I may well be checking with them a bit more often than I used to

Posted by masseur
thy're far far superior to celestica. no time to get through and very very helpful to get as much info as possible. I was actually impressed

Posted by Sebby
I hope the SEUS is up and running soon.

Posted by flanonthenet
I wonder if the firmware can be applied to branded phones... Mines an O2 (week 19). I haven't had the standby-freeze bug but obviously want to have the latest firmware.

Given that O2 are currently testing the new firmware for stock to be released w/c June 20, is it reasonable to assume that the update should be applicable to their handsets?

I'm new to SE and the online update service. Does anyone know whether branded handset owners usually have to wait for brand-specific firmware, or if they can get it from SEUS?

[ This Message was edited by: flanonthenet on 2005-06-08 15:29 ]

Branded firmware is indeed available from the SEUS, but not always immediately.
