I wouldn't bet on America. They get hardly any SE phones and from what I gather, are not very well priced either. I'd say somewhere like Singapore, Hong Kong or somewhere in Europe.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Well everyone, I'm currently in the process of ordering a C902 from Parallel Imported.

Posted by carkitter
Nice!

Will we see a review soon?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Possibly! Nobody here has done one for the C902 yet so I might just do that. I'll have to take some pointers from your V640i review!

The updated 1st post looks great.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Thanks very much Goldenface!

Posted by yea g
Yea I dont care where i get it from as long as its around 700 and sim unlocked

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
The thing that puts me off the C905 is that its a slider. After my W910i, I don't want another slider.

I'll be glad to be back to a good old candybar in the next few days when my C902 arrives, and I think I'll stick to candybars from now on. Or maybe clamshells if SE makes a really good one with the looks of the W980 or V800i and specs that beat the C902.

Posted by yea g
hopefully they learn from their mistakes cause the c905 looks really cool

Little does my Big Brother know that the view from the back porch of his old house now represents the face of NZ on Esato.com lol

I'm sure he'd be proud.

Thanks for the image by the way. It think it works really well.

E-Town are a bit weird. I didn't end up buying from them cause they didn't want to play ball but I sent them an email asking if they'd match PhonesDirect's price for me. Their reply was a little weird though. They said:

Dear customer:

Our prices of SonyEricsson C902 are:

$829.99 Black and $774.99 Red.

These prices include GST and 1Year wanrranty.

Cheers

etown

Firstly, they didn't even acknowledge my question at all which is pathetic, and then they state the wrong prices. Looking at their website, they say that both colours of C902 retail for $749.99 which is cheaper than both the prices they quoted in the email!

Anyway, I sent them a reply because by the time they sent this email, Parallel Imported had already agreed to price-match Expert Infotech which significantly undercuts anywhere else.

In my reply I said:

That's ok, I got it for $685 including 1 year warranty elsewhere.

Thanks anyway!

Oliver.

lol the black and red are different prices
and not by a small amount - almost $50

Stupid isn't it? Its based on popularity I think. They sell them for as high a price as they think they can get for them. Though I would have thought the red would be more popular and therefore more expensive!

@JiSm: Thank you mate. I'm glad everyone seems to like it! And I'm sure missing NZ will just make it even better next time you visit home again.

maybe they thought that too and made the red start off a little more expensive but the black sold more cause it was cheaper and so the red ended up cheaper than the black

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Haha nah I don't think they will have sold many if any C902s yet. They've only had them a couple of weeks! Plus I think you thought about that one way too much.

Posted by yea g
Lol just using logic only took a couple of seconds anyway

Hey guys,

Just wondering if you guys use the net on your phones and if so, for what? I'm just curious because I always read on these things like the net on your phone is great for everything, including streaming video, but Vodafone's too expensive. I've actually never tried, but that $1 a day for 10mb wouldn't be that great.. right?

I'd imagine 10MB wouldn't get you very far. I haven't really ever used it though. Also, I just wonder whether such a small screen is very good for browsing the net. I mean, I know my W910i might be alright because it is 2.4", but on a 2.0" C902 screen or something I think it might be quite annoying!

Anyway, I'd say carkitter would be better to talk to about this as he has a Vodafone data plan.

Posted by yea g
Its ok on my k610 screen to pass the time but its still better on the pc

Posted by carkitter
Well I use the V640i as a modem and 10MB would go nowhere...
I also poll my emails 6x per day so $1 per day everyday is $30 per month thats some expensive emails...
I occasionaly browse Esato and the NZ Herald tech pages which would be good value, but I don't visit You-tube or TVNZ/TV3 on demand video. If I had an iPhone I probably would but again 10MB would go nowhere.
Downloading podcasts is something I'm keen on but again the files are quite large on audio 30mins+...
Vodafone 3G zones are still not widespread and in a moving vehicle you tend to move in and out of these zones.

It's because of these reasons that I am critical of this pricing regime and have emailed Vodafone about it some weeks ago recommending they drop the per day restriction making $1.00 per 10MB over an open time period very competitive.

On the subject of public transport, I believe every bus, train, ferry and stop/station/terminal should have a free Wifi signal on board. This could have a 30 min limit and/or advertising attached but it should be available and free both for public benefit, and as an inducement to use public transport.

While some schools are working themselves into a state trying to ban cellphones from class, I've read a very good viewpoint recently on why they should be mandatory in class. The idea revolves mostly around use of smartphones to replace laptops and desktops therfore lowering education costs, not txting your mates and recording playground fights on camphones though. I'm sure Vodafone would go for something like that if it introduced teens to Mobile Data...

yea good point about the free wifi maybe for northstar or ritchies but i catch a partybus aka pbc aka poor bus company

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah I thought those prepay data deals seemed crap. I don't imagine I will ever really use it at all. Not at least until they drop the prices a bit further. It doesn't take an idiot to work out that $1 per 10MB is like paying around $100 per GB, and that's just ridiculous. On the xtra broadband deal we used to have, we got 3GB for about $30 I think, and that wasn't even enough so we now get 6GB.

On the subject of schools trying to ban mobile phones, my old school which my younger brother still goes to has given up. They say that mobile phones are fine at school so long as they don't disrupt class. I think that's a much better approach which more schools should try out. Saying there is an absolute ban is like challenging the students to disobey them. Students will always have their phones at school, its just a matter of whether or not they get caught.

Posted by yea g
we are not supposed to but no teachers care if you use ur fone at lunchtime or before school or even in between periods just not in class

Posted by carkitter
And fair enough too!

$1 per 10Mb is fine as a caual rate I reckon because most people will use under 50MB per month and thats only $5.00 - cheap in my book. Anyone heading towards 200+MB could get a txt directing them towards a Data plan...

Posted by carkitter
I see Vodafone has decided to offer some cheaper iPhone plans with less calls and txts but 250MB of data. Finally some reasonable prices worth considering.
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sec[....]y.cfm?c_id=5&objectid=10528243

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
That is a bit better, but I don't understand why Vodafone never ever does decent texting deals in their plans. Those new plans for example have 100 or 200 texts depending on which you choose. That wouldn't last me even a week! And then they stick heaps of minutes worth of calls in, which is fine, but I don't get why so little texts in comparison! Do texts really cost a lot to Vodafone?

See that's why I quit my plan a couple of years ago. I text significantly more than I call. Hell, sometimes I don't make any calls at all over a whole month. In the end I realised it was actually a lot cheaper for me to be on prepay, so that's what I did! And I now pay half as much as I did on my plan, and I get about 5 or 6 times more texts out of it.

My C902 arrived this morning before I even woke up! It was a nice surprise to find sitting outside my door. Anyway I've been playing around with it for the last few hours and I should have some pictures up shortly!

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Well my brother has been using my camera and didn't tell me it needed charging. The little bastard. So here's a couple of pictures using my mum's camera. The only two that turned out ok cause its an awful camera. More later, after my camera charges!

First impressions are that this phone is simply amazing. So much better than even the W910i!

Posted by yea g
that fone looks cool. I was going to get one until I met the c905, which, IMO has a really good design aswell. Man are good at designing

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah, in my opinion, SE has the best designed phones of all.

Posted by K71
FINALLY i can do it. must have been the timeout setting. over 5 min to type a message on the phone! suck. still, it is a good one.

Posted by K71
well i must say its alot easier doing it on a computer!!!maybe if i had an iphone............or an X1 it might be more fun on a mobile.i did try an iphone a few weeks ago instore.very nice to use the touchscreen, but overall it didn't seem to be as nice to handle.still, not too bad overall.

Posted by K71
oh yeah, the first page is looking very nice too.maybe you could put what phones each of the members are currently running next to their name?not sure if thats a good idea or not.

Posted by carkitter
I'd thought about that but the avatars make it unnecessary on reflection.

@M-O
Nice new phone and I see you've changed your avatar already
Gee, the C902 is really thin - a big improvement over the K850 IMO, congratulations!

Posted by K71
true, but my avatar selection does not have a RED G900 in it, so does it really tell the true story of my cell phone life??
and yes, the C902 certainly looks quite nice, it was really only the screen size that put me off, however as shown on esato, i think its camera is more up to it than the G900's.

If you can't select the SE avatar you want, put in a request to Laffen in the 'Where are the Avatars' thread found here.

What if we put a bit more info, for example carkitter, you're running a few V800is and a V640i aren't you? We could write that in... If you guys are keen. However we can only do it for us members who are around. A few haven't posted in over half a year and I wouldn't have a clue what phone they have!

Thanks, yeah the C902 is very thin. Thinner than my W910i and I thought that was thin. But the C902 has a good weight to it. Its heavier than the W910i and I think it just feels far better quality.

Posted by yea g
sure, I guess you could do that

lol we had a big as flood today. lots of rain + high tide = lots and lots of water

Edit: yay my 50th post XD

Edit2: here's a pic of the flood:

Wow, that's alot of water! How are you coping with that?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Wow that's quite a flood! Did it damage your house or anything? How long would it take for that to clear?

Posted by carkitter
Just noticed Expert Infotech has the T303 listed for $199.
I didn't know that was available yet.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah, Plemix has had it for about two weeks.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Here's a few shots of my C902 and the box and a few comparison shots with my W910i:

Cheers.

Posted by carkitter
Very cool!

It's got that new menu style that the W980 has... what do you think of it?

Posted by yea g
about the flood: the water doesn't matter much, its just in the paddocks, the house is on the top of a hill

about the fone: looks good do you mind the screen being smaller. thats the one feature I don't like about the c902

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Thanks guys.

@carkitter: Yeah I purposely tried to capture the menu for that shot. I don't use it though. You have the choice of three different menu styles: The original, the one in the picture, and one that shows only one icon at a time and you scroll up and down. But I find that I'm so used to the original that if I have a different one set, I go into the menu and wonder what the hell is wrong with my phone! So they are a nice additional feature, but not as good as the usual menu.

@yea g: I worried about that before I got the phone, especially cause I was coming from the large 2.4" of the W910i, but I shouldn't have been worried. The thing is that the C902's screen is just as bright, and it has the exact same QVGA resolution, so while I'm using it I don't even notice its smaller. Some photos of the phone that I've seen make the screen look smaller than it actually looks when you see one in reality. It doesn't look small at all when you have it.

I'm glad your house wasn't ruined by the flood! That would have been such a pain to deal with!

Posted by carkitter
Well I'd have the carousel style menu set in any C902 or W980 I owned but like you I probably wouldn't use it either as I use the Activity Menu to do EVERYTHING on my V640i and the V630i before it. I add all the functions I regularly use to the My Shortcuts (Alarms, Keylock, BT, Notes, Themes, Weather App) and from the Standby screen the ^ is open Opera Mini, V is Phonebook, < is Calendar, > is Email Inbox, which just leaves pressing the Middle button twice for Txt. With dedicated buttons for the Camera and Media Player, I seldom see the much maligned Voda menu icons...
