@frankthetank: That's awesome that you scored a K850i out of it! If you can't get the K850i to use the HDR software, maybe an older photo could be used?

@yea g: Welcome mate! I hadn't heard of Black + White before... Thanks for the link! So is this the one of the new networks we heard about a while back?

What phone do you use dude? And what city are you from?

I do have a cracker panorma shot of Mount Cook that you might appreciate?

Or Lake Tekapo?

Whangaparoa Harbour?

Mt John Observatory?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Thanks for that!

I'll work on it tomorrow night hopefully. Obviously if I'm making it a background, I will need to make it a bit paler. I'm thinking either the Lake Tekapo or Mount Cook one, because they are really typical of New Zealand's beautiful countryside. They are all really stunning though. I've been up to Mount John Observatory and around that area myself and views like that really stick in your mind.

@frankthetank

Great shots mate! What you need for the K850i is an IPK-100 but I don't know if SENZ have sourced it yet as when it was released last year I called the Sony Style store in Newmarket who said SENZ didn't know what it was and had no plans to supply it. Typical behaviour really. Anyway, worth enquiring again I reckon.

WOW - Good spotting!

That's very likely NZCommunications! I've heard recently that they're doing a low cost approach to mobile, but B&W is a very interesting concept and could certainly tempt me away from VodafoneNZ.
I signed up as a Beta-tester and got this email:

Dear XXXXXXXXX,

Thanks for dropping us a line.

One of the gurus from the Black+White team will be in touch with you for a bit of a chin wag some time in the near future.

Cheers,

Looking forward to this chin wag

Edit: just out of interest i sent the wap settings to my fone. the homepage is a non-exitant page wap.bw.co.nz and the proxy is the same one as vodafone - 172.30.38.3 port 8080

NZC have signed a deal with VodafoneNZ to use the Vodafone network in the same manner as TelstaClear renamed 021 services as 029 but now use the 027 network.

@M-O
All of those photos would look great on the first post but my preference is for the Whangaparoa Harbour shot as it's more representative of what I see everyday.

looking in b&w's t&c's they mention a company called m2 New Zealand Limeted. A google says that m2 signed a deal with huawei to build a mobile network in New Zealand, at least thats how i understood it...

Posted by carkitter
Right again!

It appears M2 is already up and running in Oz as GreenMobiles specialising in Small Business Enterprise and running an Online shop called Simply Mobiles supplying Optus handsets. Here is a link to thier SE phone page including C902, K660, W890 and W980 at discounted (Australian dollar) prices: http://www.simplymobiles.com.au/cart.php?m=product_list&c=3

And here's a link to a pdf of thier agreement with Vodafone signed last year signalling their plans in NZ and detailing their background. http://m2.com.au/viewfile.php?id=82

From the M2NZ news page:
"...M2 is also already in the New Zealand market entering back in January [2006] with a Wholesale Services Agreement with Telecom New Zealand. This deal is initially for fixed line services. Since the beginning of the year, M2 has been growing an active sales channel in both Auckland and Wellington.
The new deal with Vodafone's wholesale division will give M2 a lot more leverage in the market and will allow it to bundle fixed line access from Telecom New Zealand and cell phone access from Vodafone..."

Hmmm... good luck to them getting Voda and Telecom to play together nicely; in 2006 I was an Xtra customer but couldn't get my emails on my K700 or V800 because they were on Vodafone. I hope M2 can work around this.

Info on NZ Communications is hard to find, this was part of the profile they provided when the submitted an application for Wimax spectrum being auctioned by the government:

"NZCL has announced plans to commence business in NZ using Huawei Technologies as its technology partner. Huawei Technologies have supplied equipment on 32 GSM/WCDMA networks worldwide and are the fastest growing network equipment supplier in the world. They are on track to supply 20% of all new mobile phone networks by 2010.

NZCL is headquartered in Auckland with offices in Wellington and Christchurch. The company is in the process of deploying an initial 840 cell sites to cover 60% of the NZ population. The company currently employs 58 people and 20 consultants. It is in negotiations for multiple co-location sites with Telecom and has filed XX RMA applications for cell site tower erection in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch."

Alrighty, Whangaparoa Harbour it shall be. But you have to wait. I'm getting over my hangover from design camp...

Posted by yea g
right the one thing i want to know is gsm or cdma. hopefully it will be gsm so we can all use our sony ericsson phones and hopefully they will have a good 3g coverage (if they have 3g lol)

Posted by carkitter
All network providers will be on GSM come November!
What I'm worried about is that a new separation may form in the near future as some networks decide to go the Wimax route instead of LTE.

LTE has wide industry acceptance while WiMax is an American standard doomed to failure but propped up by the fact that Google are investing in it and will be releasing Android on it.

Yes, WiMax is the new CDMA and NZ Communications are heavily committed to it, while Vodafone are committed to LTE. I don't know where Telecom stand but it'll probably be the opposite of Vodafone while M2 will probably go where Vodafone goes or may be influenced by Optus in Oz.

I hope these telco's get thier act together and all go the LTE path or else we'll see more incompatible mobile networks like to past and I though we'd just fixed that situation.... finally!

Posted by yea g
sound like another bluray vs hd-dvd

why cant they be more like sony ericsson or nokia - they all decided to use bluetooth, imagine if they didn't, sony stereos would be able to connect a play back from sony ericsson phones but not nokias lol

Yeah, only with that battle consumers stayed away from both formats until there was a winner meaning the issue was resolved relatively quickly. I can't see NZer's not having cellphone accounts until the LTE/Wimax battle is resolved.

good point. maybe most of the companies will go with one and then the other companies will follow. at&t, vodafone and o2 probably will have the most effect on the others

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah I'd say Vodafone and AT&T would have the most effect on others too, but the thing is that those two companies won't agree. AT&T being American will go for WiMax, while Vodafone will go for LTE, causing confusion everywhere. But if the whole CDMA vs. GSM is anything to go by the Americans will lose out again.

Exactly.

WiMax in the US is being pushed by Sprint Nextel who I think are CDMA; AT&T are obviously GSM. It looks like CDMA networks are mostly the ones resisting LTE, some things never change eh? That's why I'm worried about Telecom. I think NZC are gambling on WiMax giving them an advantage but they're betting on a loser IMO.

I've emailed National Party Communications and IT spokesman Maurice Williamson about this issue; come November, he may be Communications Minister. In the unlikely event that Labour wins a 4th term(!?!), I'll email their relevant Minister.

So i can't say that the k850i is super amazing or anything i miss the ol' k800i and it's lack of Vodaphone branding and the custom cam drivers are head and shoulders above the developments in the new camera software...
I guess i have some adjustments to make it's quite tricky to text on for example

Posted by carkitter
Well I've never felt it was anything special TBH but it certainly has good camera specs so if anyone can make it shine, I'm sure you can!

Congrats again to Oli on his wins in the Best Photoshopper and Best Australasian categories of the 2008 Esato Awards. I had a sense that we kiwis were in with a good show as the Aussies have been very quiet of late and the 'Australians where are you?' thread has generaly gone AWOL! At the same time Oli has led the charge here and become a prolific poster easily eclipsing my post count! Well done!

I'm very pleased at recieving a gong for my V640i review! I put a lot of effort into it, tried to be as honest and impartial as possible while still conveying my enthusiam for this underrated phone. Writing is something close to my heart just as drawing and photoshopping is to Oli so it's great we've both managed to do well in our respective 'fields'. Not being able to vote for my own review, I voted for PeterKay's W960 review on the strength of its photos and 80,000+ views which is simply incredible.

I'm pleased though to be 2nd Australasian rather than 4th Australian as last year

I had hoped I might have a chance in the Best Debater category but it seems one needs to position one's self with an emotive, critical point of a view to be recognised there; Axxxr used to and was always recognised for it even though he eventually argued himself into oblivion. Perhaps another member will go the same way?
ScotsboyUK is undeniably the best orater on Esato but we seldom see his talents these days...

Posted by Dionasaurus
Hey guys,

First of all congratulations to us and our little country for the Olympic medals!

Now my two cents: I managed to get the black C902 from Parallel Imported for $719, and I gotta say, I love this phone. In saying that, my last phone was a K750i that I had for almost three years so I guess it's a bit of a jump for me. Haven't really seen the camera quality properly yet as I haven't updated the firmware which I'm told will install much better camera drivers, but the phone is now my designated mp3 player with its awesome media player.

Last night I went to a party where someone had hired a stripper, and naturally, with my new phone, everyone demanded that I be the dodgy guy and record the performance for the birthday boy (which I didn't want to do, I swear!). But in the end, the phone got a lot of the stripper's attention as she started performing mostly for my camera.. err, phone. So bottom line is that the C902 gets you extra special stripper attention!

So here I am, lying in bed, hungover as hell typing this, my brain is a shrivelled prune, but my C902 is next to me playing Coldplay's new album, with videos and photos of my mate's special experience. Life is good.

Hahaha!
Candidate for best post next year? Maybe...

First in this thread to get a C902, well done! Enjoy your new phone.

Posted by yea g
I think my ps3 ID is qazqaz1 but I don't have many games that can do online play

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
@Dionasaurus: Sounds like I'm going to be enjoying my C902 more than expected if it attracts that kind of attention! Funny that Parallel Imported don't reply to emails when you try to get the price down though. Really annoying!

@carkitter: You got my vote for best debater! I don't know whether best debater is such a great award to go for though. Look at Dogmann, everyone hates him... and from what I gather Axxxr had quite a few enemies too.

And Scotsboyuk doesn't post much here anymore because he is a mod on Esato's semi-rival, semi-friendly se-nse forums.

@yea g: I'll give you an add. I only have 4 games anyway. Maybe we'll have one in common.

Posted by yea g
I have:
motorstorm
the simpsons game
ratchet and clank future: tools of destruction
virtua tennis 3

out of those only motorstorm can do online play lol

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Ah, I don't have any of those games anyway. I'll add you anyway just in case we eventually do have a game in common!

@Everyone: Can I have your opinions on the improved(?) first post please? I'm not sure whether its showing up too dark for you guys, and whether or not the background image is too pale or whatever. Thanks in advance!

front page looks ok. maybe change the black writing to a light grey or light blue, could cause problems with people with a lower brightness/contrast level on their monitor

Cool, thanks very much. I've made some changes now. I hope its better.

Posted by yea g
yes that seems to make the words stand out more. maybe it was my fault i just adjusted the contrast on my monitor from 70 to 80 it make everything look better

Posted by carkitter
Wow! that is cool!!

You've really done us proud M-O

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Thanks fellas. Man, all that code really takes a bit of work! And so much trial and error!

How'd everybody's weekend go?

Posted by carkitter
Not bad, worked Sat, watched the Olympics and lurked here for the rest of it! Made the family some Hamburgers for dinner - handmade patties, lettuce, egg, onions, cheese, tomato, any more and I can't get my mouth around it

When we get some more GSM networks I'll create some links and info for the first post with HSDPA speeds and SE models available. In the mean time, I forgot to mention that on Friday I noticed the 3G+ symbol in Silverdale north of Auckland (just down the road from Whangaparoa actually) but was unable to do a speedtest. I'll try that sometime soon.

Found an interesting piece by Bob Jones (wealthy NZ property magnate, boxing expert and raconteur) about how useless cellphones are as a business tool. It's lengthy but great fun and insightful too. It's an excerpt from one of his books so I hope I'm not breaching copyright I found it on the iStart website. iStart are the publishers of MyMobile Magazine in case you were wondering...

"I do not understand, to the point of bafflement, why people carry telephones around with them for commercial purposes. They got along much better before these things turned up..." more

I've heard Bob Jones on Radio Sport when he used to speak regularly with one of the DJ's there. He is superb and doesn't mince words...

I've had a look around the regional forums and alot of the regional threads are slow moving and some have died. It seems to be a trend that people aren't chatting in those threads anymore except for several threads where English is a 2nd language. Even the immensely popular India Thread Reloaded didn't appear in the awards We kiwis are lucky to have our original poster still present and the first post is now second to none!

Maaaan, you're making me hungry! That sounds like an awesome dinner. Home-made is always better than bought if you do it right!

Thanks for doing that! Half of our first post is your work already! Yeah there are a lot of regional threads that are dead or close to it. I think the South African thread is the only one that really challenges ours in terms of first post effort, but then I don't know when that was last updated.

Anyway, don't expect ours to die soon. I really enjoy working on making it better and we've got a great group of us keeping it going. I'm not going anywhere!

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Hahaha that Bob Jones article is great. Its funny, it reminds me of what my mum was telling me about a week ago. A man called her in regard to a painting that he wanted to buy from my mum's art gallery. He wanted some details about the painting so he rang up and asked mum for the shop email address. My mum was a bit confused about why he wanted the email address when they were already talking on the phone, so she offered to give him any details he wanted right then and there, via phone. To that he said, "No, no, I want to send an email and get the information".

Now that just shows how screwed up we've become due to technology. This guy, rather than talking in person, wanted to go the anti-social, anonymous route and send an email. Just like young kids preferring to text each other in horrible text language than to give each other a call. Calling is so much quicker. It doesn't make any sense.

Don't get me wrong, text messaging is great. But I just think that having a whole one hour or longer conversation via 160 character text messages is plain ridiculous. At that rate, soon people will be texting their friend sitting next to them, or parents will be texting their children to come to the dinner table when they're only in the next room.

Phones are great. Just use them in moderation!

MyMobile Magazine has C902 listed at $899, same price as the LG Secret, N81 and P1i. C702 is available according to SE's wbsite but isn't in the magazine or on Vodafone's Online Store. Dick Smith Electronics has the original N95 at $799 and K800i at runout price of $299.

On the down side, it looks like S302 is no longer coming to NZ.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah I saw the C902 in it, but I've yet to see it in any shop. I've seen no sign of the C702 at all, so I doubt that one. The SE NZ website isn't run by SE NZ I think.

Anyway, that $899 price for the C902 is crap. I don't expect I will be paying any more than $730 when I get mine, and that's with warranty, everything working fine, and no Vodafone branding!

The S302 is no loss in my opinion.

Posted by yea g
what about c905 hopefully it won't be a horrific cost. when it comes out I'll do a search on price spy. I wont pay much over $700 even if it has 8.1 mp camera and looks really cool (imo)

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Even parallel importers won't sell it under $1000. Its one of the first 8MP phones so it won't be cheap even at an importer unfortunately. I shudder to think what price Vodafone is going to ask for it...

Posted by carkitter
Probably be priced similar to the N95 8GB - $1399
Can't see it getting anywhere near $700 at all.
What about W902 when the importers get it. $999 on release?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah I'd say your estimates are about right, carkitter.

Posted by carkitter
Looking at the NZ SE range I'd say the big news will be the X1 and the W595 which if priced at $599-699 on release it'll take off. Still can't believe we're not getting the W902, the importers will be laughing all the way to the bank!

Judging by the special price on V640i's and the short life-span of the V630i here, I'm wondering if Vodafone are holding off releasing the G502 until their ready to do to the V640i what the K610 did to the V630i, probably at a price of $399 too.

The K770i and C702 clash also. Even more reason why Vodafone should have gone for the T650i.
