I'm not surprised! Everyone in the world is on facebook except for me, and Bebo is full of Spambots. MySpace fell of the radar ages ago, and Twitter has never really gained huge popularity in NZ at least.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
There's a few HUGE SE Aino advertisements up in Christchurch now. One where that X1 ad used to be (the one I posted a photo of) and one over in Riccarton (richer suburb). Both are official SE ads and not Vodafone or Telecom too which is cool cause it shows they're finally putting in some effort! The ads mostly advertise the Remote Play feature of Aino.

well guess what, it wasn't the vodem that was slow, the crappy computer it was on just had usb1.1. I didn't even realise that

Posted by carkitter
Not much you can do about that is there?

Bebo is dead. Facebook is much, much better. My favourite social networking site however, has to be youtube, if you even count that as social networking.

Have to admit im on the old facebook too...wish i was on it much less however

So i got the LG Arena back and its a perfect little phone now.. works a treat So if anyones asks yes it is a good phone if its working as it should!

I see scary things happening in the UK with the Satio , SE really need to get back on that turf again or the Iphone will finish it off over there. Though hate these saddos putting rumours, trying to make SE sound like bad brand.

Do you go to any of the Phoenix games?

I went to the Auckland Club final a few years ago at North Harbour Stadium and won a match ball. Still have it too!

Thanks!! yes, i have a season pass to the phoenix, same as last year. very frustrating to watch at the moment!!

i saw aino and satio dummy phones in a telecom store today!! seem to be nice looking phones. satio was $1350 i think, aino was about $800. not sure about getting satio now after keeping an eye on the thread in the symbian section. i think it is still a good phone, but it not really being an SE in an operating system sense puts me off a bit. might have to check out a live version somewhere first.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Quiet in here recently! Anyone else notice Telecom now sells the Satio, and $300 more expensive than Vodafone too, which is a bit of a turn around. It's $1499.

Posted by yea g
Hmm... I think vodafone's price is on contract, they always do lousy contract discounts on anything not an iPhone

Posted by carkitter
Xperia Pureness available at EI.

T700, Naite at obscenely cheap prices...

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Haha they got the wrong image for the Pureness. It's actually cheaper than I expected though, despite it being very expensive!

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Lucky you yea g.

Not sure what I am getting for Christmas actually. Apart from DJ Hero which my girlfriend gave me early seeing she has gone up to Whangarei for Christmas.

Anybody else know what Christmas presents they're getting?

Posted by carkitter
@M-O
How are you preparations for the move to Auckland going?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
It's going ok. My girlfriend was looking at another place in Northcote but I took your advice and told her to avoid that area. We've seen a nice one in Castor Bay but it's somewhat to early to be looking right now. It's pretty stressful getting things sorted, I don't even know an exact date I'll be leaving yet!

Posted by carkitter
Castor Bay is a nice area. The East Coast Bays is the best place on the shore to live. It'll be close to the bus routes and about 15 mins via car to Takapuna/Albany or 10 mins to the motorway.

BTW, on Saturday I went on a day trip to the Coromandel Peninsula. Here are some of the photos:

Main Street Coromandel Town

Hills above Coromandel, looking west across the town to the Hauraki Gulf.

Kuaotunu Beach Reserve

Opito Bay

Street decoration in Whangamata

Waihi Pumphouse - 5 stories high, 106yrs old, found it completely by accident - definitely the highlight of the trip.

Also:
Played mini golf and ate Snapper and Chips dinner in Whitianga.
Had a brief look around Tairua.
Enjoyed the Thames - Coromandel coast road.
Saw the giant L&P bottle in Paeroa.
Visited the art and craft shops in Coromandel town.

Had an awesome day, planning a longer trip soon!

We've seen a place in Hillcrest that we think is ok. Is Hillcrest nice? The Castor Bay one we think might be too far away from anything.

Posted by carkitter
Hillcrest is fine.
It's next to Northcote but not as dodgy. It's a pretty standard area closer to shops, workplaces, schools and motorways.
Castor Bay is an upmarket area as all coastal areas are. It's definitely more remote than Hillcrest, some prefer that/some don't.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Hmm... Not sure if I like the sound of that, but we'll keep looking anyway. Thanks for your advice by the way, it's nice to have somebody I can consult about various places I have no clue about!

How was everybody's Christmas? Mine was fine, we just did the usual family parties and barbecues and my 5 month old nephew was the star of the show. Not a lot for me on the present front but I suppose that goes with getting older... I was just glad to get four days off work!

Posted by carkitter
Went to Muriwai Beach on Christmas Day afternoon with my girlfriend and then had dinner with friends. I spent Boxing day with two of my sons aged 5 and 4. One of them is into airplanes so I got him a toy plane, specifically a FA-18 Hornet US Airforce jet complete with an array of missiles and two pilot figures. It's about 50cm long so it is mighty impressive; he was so excited when he saw it. The elder one I gave a radio controlled boat and we spent the afternoon down at Waiake Beach playing with it and water pistols. After dinner we went to Western Springs to watch the speedway:

Yesterday we went to Kawakawa and Waiti Bays east of Auckland and finished up at Miranda Hot Springs for a evening swim.

The sea around Auckland is looking especially good ATM and I don't have a boat. I think it's about time I went for a trip on a ferry to one of the islands in the Hauraki Gulf. I haven't been to Rangitoto or Waiheke Islands for a few years now.

Posted by yea g
lol, we also went to speedway, was very busy.

Btw, if you go to Harvey Norman, you can get a rain check for a netbook equivalent to HP Mini 110-1111TU for $288!

It certainly was. The racing was great, lots of crashes, good atmosphere, a very enjoyable night. Pity we couldn't stay past 10pm but had to get the kids home. We'll definitely be back again soon though.

Would anyone be interested in participating in a NZ Tour thread using my V800?
It would be like the W810 World Tour but with the focus on posting pics of the places you regularly visit - home, work school, uni, shops, sports, etc and less on discussion of who gets the phone next. If the thread is successful around NZ perhaps the phone could venture offshore... who knows?

I'd like to start it on Jan 1st and will probably need to send it to Muhammad Oli pretty smartly before he leaves Christchurch, it could then go to yea g and on to anyone else who's interested... whad'ya think?

That sounds like a good idea carkitter, but not sure if we'll get many people. Still, it would be interesting anyway.

Hopefully people like soane28, JiSm, K71 and frankthetank get on here and get involved. Then it would work out great I reckon. But if you want to start it and you want me to do it before I leave Christchurch, definitely go for it.

Posted by yea g
Well, I am going on holiday on the 2nd so it would have to be sent to me after. I don't think NZ post would be able to get it here in time if you sent it today

Posted by carkitter
I don't want to send it to people who are going on holiday, I think that's where the W810 thread went wrong. People started saying that they could take the phone here and there and we lost track of them. I want people to be at home when the phone comes to them and to photograph some local places. It's about the phone experiencing Esato member's lives not the phone growing a life of it's own.

Well, finding a place to stay in Auckland is pretty difficult! It's not a lack of places to stay, it is that agents won't let out a place without meeting us first, meaning we have to go to Auckland just to secure a place.

At the moment we are looking at apartments in Albany and there are some pretty nice ones. Hopefully one of them comes through...

Posted by Evilchap
yeah Auckland can be a pain for that, but at least you will be on the Shore. i think all of us Aucklanders will have to catch up over a beer at some point.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Well i've come to auckland for the day. I'm in albany and not enjoying the heat! I have to walk everywhere, trying to find a flat. Wish me luck!

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Came back to Christchurch last night and I think I've secured an apartment in Albany which is literally seconds away from where I'm studying. Also while in Auckland I managed to score myself a nice sunburn and some blisters. I think I walked around 10-15km, maybe more in the heat yesterday.

Posted by yea g
Lol should have worn sunblock.

Posted by Evilchap
so are you working as well as studying while your up here? I know a few students and they find it rough living in Auckland on student money

You're the only one saying that! The weather has been glorious - I've been to beaches across the Coromandel, North Shore, West Auckland and East Auckland in the past few weeks and it's been absolutely awesome. Do invest in some sunblock though...

Owning a car in Auckland is a necessity as you found out. Even more so in Albany as it is a long walk from your campus in the Albany Village to the Mega Centre/Westfield Mall and from there to the bus station.
At least you'll be close to a Speight's pub for a taste of home.

@yea g: Funny you should say that. I had sunblock with me but as my dad dropped me off at the airport, he said, "Don't take that, you won't need it!", so I left it in my car and well, I did need it. Of course, I only realised I was getting burnt when I was about a kilometre away from anywhere that sells sunblock. So by the time I got to the shops, I was well and truly burnt.

@Evilchap: Good to see you back round these parts.
I will definitely be looking for a job because our rent isn't that cheap (but it is reasonable for three of us) if we get the place we have applied for. I am looking to maybe continue working for Timezone when I get up to Auckland because the company at least knows I'm trustworthy (and my uncle might be able to score me a job again!).

@carkitter: Well I did like the heat, it was more that I wasn't so prepared for it and am not so used to it. Everyone in Albany is tanned and when I looked in a bathroom mirror at the mall I was a pale white, with red cheeks. Suffering in the heat I guess. I'm a Tomato now.

You know, I did that walk from Albany Village to the bus station four times on Thursday. According to Google Maps on my phone, it's around 2km each way. I don't mind that walk, but I can see what you're getting at. I won't want to be doing that several times a week. But if we get the place we applied for, my car can stay home all day. I was quite surprised because I didn't know until I got there, but the place is literally next door to my campus.

Hello guys I was wondering what carriers you guys use, ie: vodacom or MTN; I could teach you guys how to browse/download/upload all for free (^^,)

Posted by yea g
Sorry but, none of those tricks work on NZ mobile companies. It is also a form of stealing, and therefore illegal, and I'm pretty sure we don't discuss illegal things here on this forum

I get 3.25GB of Vodafone 3G data to my iPhone and 3GB of Vodafone 3G to my Vodem Stick with another 3GB available for a small extra fee plus free wifi-based ADSL2+ landline internet provided by my landlord (included in my rent) plus free community wifi available at public libraries in my city. I even have a 3G wifi router which can turn my car into a mobile wifi hotspot. I have internet access protruding from every orifice. No thanks.

Hampton Downs is open!!!

No need to tell you what this is:

This is a Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer:

CamAm cars entering the left hander hairpin...

...which has a downhill braking area, a decreasing radius entry and is followed by a short straight and medium speed right hand corner. This corner is complex, easily misjudged, has at least 2 cornering lines and is perfect for criss-crossing other drivers. It's crucial to get it right because getting it wrong could give an overtaking competitor the advantage in the following right hander which leads on to the front straight.

Denny Hulme's McLaren CanAm car at about 200km/h on the front straight:

This track, while only 2/3 finished at present, is simply awesome. It's one of those tracks where cars will battle from corner to corner and there will be close finishes aplenty. It will produce some unbelievable motorcycle racing - I hope when the other 1/3 of the track is built, the full size venue will attract Moto GP because I would love to see Valentino Rossi do a masterclass on it.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Wow, lucky you carkitter! Nice pictures too. It's been too long since I visited a decent racetrack. Ruapuna down here doesn't really cut it, and before that I've only really been to Bathurst and not on a racing day. What are the chances of Moto GP choosing Hampton Downs do you think?

Man I love McLaren F1s too... Is that an LM?

EDIT: Actually I went to Le Mans back in 2000 as well, but again, not on a racing day unfortunately. Good museums at both Le Mans and Bathurst.

It is one of 3 McLarens with engines uprated to LM spec (which was actually detuned compared to road spec) but now derestricted and capable of 390km/h (up from 372km/h). It recently had a service which meant a technician flew to NZ and removed the engine from the car to carry out routine maintenance (Ferrari maintenance requires an engine removal too, every 2yrs). I love McLaren F1s, they are simply the world's best car without a doubt. The last one to sell went for approx $6m so even a Lotto win won't buy one unfortunately. I have a ticket in tonight's Big Wednesday draw BTW.

Tweet from 2Degrees:
At the crack of dawn tomorrow we will be unveiling three, 1-day, online only handset offers. Be in quick.

Also early tomorrow (7am) Engadget's full coverage of the Apple event largely expected to unveil a touchscreen tablet.

Wow, you know your facts! Not absolutely sure I've ever seen a McLaren F1, but I have a feeling I may have while in Europe in 2000. A green one in France maybe? But not an LM. It's definitely one of my all-time favourite cars too. It's one of those late 80s/early 90s supercars that are still amazing today, like the Ferrari F40, Jag XJ220, Bugatti EB110 and Lamborghini Diablo. The Ferrari F40 being my all-time absolute favourite car.

Did you win anything on Big Wednesday?

Oh and those 2degrees deals are pretty terrible. With those one day deals, they're only really matching their rivals.

Posted by carkitter
There was a guy on hand to tell me a bout this particular car.
The Ferrari info came from a fellow automotive pre-trade student who had work experience organised for him at Continental Cars Ferrari department - yes, I was GUTTED when I heard that! I did my work experience at Albany Ford (now defunct) mostly washing cars.

No luck with Big Wednesday unfortunately.

4 and Rotary Nationals this weekend, show on Sat, drags on Sunday. I might go, I haven't been since 2005. Anyone else?
