@Muhammad-Oli: Its ok man its better to ask these questions. Yes I always turn on the wifi first then the little menu pulls down for which connection you wish to select. I think I might have to debrand my phone, can I debrand the w995a? or is it Telecom dependent? Where can I get it done in NZ?

Posted by carkitter
Debranding won't improve the wifi performance, just void your warranty. I'd keep the warranty intact if I was unhappy with any aspect of a phone's performance.

@soane28
How does the Arena handle multiple email accounts?
Are there any downloadable apps? Weather Apps? GPS?
What's the Photo Gallery like?
Is auto-rotate of the screen fast? Can you rotate email and txt screens?

carkitter - havent tryed email yet, but thats a good thought.
Apps im still trying to work out, cant seem to find the widget options, theres two present on the widget homescreen but no option to put more on? Must be blind
Photo gallery is really good, the pinch zoom is superior - I dont know if any other phone could make looking at pictures so easy. Really like the layout too, as you can see all photos from a particular date then just swipe up to go back to other pictures really cool.
Auto rotate is generally quick, instant in the menu, in music it takes a little longer. You have auto rotate in texting and the qwerty keypad looks useful, just need some practice. Not too sure about emails but im guessing it would be there.

Chunkybeats - that really sucks! Could you take it back and explain the situation? Im sure if you show them they will have to do something about it? Sounds like its the preset stuff telecoms put on board thats mucking around!

@soane28 - Yeah it sucks, my w995a is from Trademe and I got it for an amazing price ($500), so no come back and I knew about that already. I think I will debrand it as I had a familiar problem when I was back at home in Ireland, where my w810i was branded with TMobile and I got it debranded and it was so quicker and everything worked perfectly. Any ideas where I can debrand it? Im in Wellington though, not much choice down here compared to Auckland.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Any debranding done in New Zealand will need to be done yourself. There are plenty of tutorials right here on Esato.

Yeah, but Telecom and SE don't know that. Just tell them you bought it in Auckland on your travels, or that you've lost the proof of purchase. It's clearly XT branded so they can't argue it's an import, and it's obviously not 1yr old so SE warranty still applies. Try and get some info out of the previous owner to back up your story ie: date of purchase and location but don't be too specific because Telecom will probably be able to trace the exact details. If all else fails, tell them it was a gift.

Posted by soane28
Taking it in and telling them what they need to hear is worth a shot, although i think you need to have proof of a warranty before they do anything for free?

Debranding is easy enough look for the latest firmware for W995 and there are tutorials here and also on the net for guidance.

Posted by chunkybeats
Thanks guys but I dont think Telecom will listen I have had this problem before with TMobile when I was at home and they needed proof of purchase and receipt so its a no go, but if it is easy as my w810i was, it should be no problem to debrand. I think there is a place in Lower Hutt that does repairs and probably will do unlocking, debranding so will check it out.

Posted by Evilchap
if you have no POP I would advise going through the lads at the SE call centre instead of a Telecom store. I can give you a couple of names there of some helpfull folks if you wish. I wouldnt advise debranding if its only to fix the wifi problem, unlikely to make a difference.

Posted by carkitter
I think the wifi will sort itself out, it did on my G705

Vodafone's Xmas offers
The Vodem stick on prepay is a very good deal. The modem was previously worth $249, this deal prices it at $50.

I was just wandering around at The Warehouse yesterday and noticed the W995 is slashed down to $599!!! Crazy it was retailing at $999 with XT, do you think they are not selling too well and brought the price down? They will sell a bit more now at this price

Nah mate it's down at that price to make way for Ainio which they have brought in at the W995's old price.

The LG Arena is a bloody nightmare! I cant put music on the thing, it wont let me do mass storage, or music sync, my memory card appears then doesnt so i might suddenly have all this stuff then it dissapears and i have to fiddle with the thing to get it working again The phone freezes too, and sometimes the screen wont even work for a minute or so.

Ive reinstalled the USB drivers, ive reinstalled the CD, ive restarted the computer after every reinstall, ive updated everything and it still wont work. Ive even reformated my memory card and that didnt work. So now i dont have any music on the phone at all.

I am SO close to THROWING THIS PHONE OUT MY WINDOW!!!

Aino is looking very very good right now....

Posted by yea g
Plug it in then have a look at device manager. If it doesn't show up at all, throw it out the window.

Posted by carkitter
...and then get an Aino or wait until Q1 2010 for the X10. Don't get a 3Gs.

Posted by yea g
Motorola droid - any thoughts?

Posted by carkitter
Nice but I'm not into qwerty keyboards be they fixed like on a BB or slide-out like on the X1, N97 or Droid.
If I have to have a qwerty, I prefer a virtual keyboard like on X10 or the iPhone.

I'm not a traditional smartphone buyer.

Posted by looking4free
Break into pieces instead of throwing it. And get a new phone

Posted by yea g
Heh, the droid has both

Posted by soane28
Droid looks interesting even if im not into smartphones so much

Posted by carkitter
Think I'd go for the Cliq/DEXT rather than the Droid, Cliq is cheaper too.
Looking forward to comparing both instore. I hope they keep the Cliq name for NZ, DEXT is kinda strange sounding. I think Cliq may be US only.

Cliq v X10 (Rachael) v iPhone 3Gs

Well I solved my wifi problem with my W995a, I just installed Opera Mini and I can use wifi so thats awesome. I still cant stream though, its a Telecom thing for definite as I cant adjust streaming settings and is locked out. I dont think Il go for debrand too much hassle and I would miss my w995a!!!

Posted by soane28

Vodafone pricing fail

Posted by carkitter
Actually, their pricing is quite good too.

So anyone watch the All Whites last night?

I can remember the last time NZ were at the World Cup, it was a pretty big deal. I think we lost all our matches 5-0 but it was still a pretty amazing accomplishment to reach the tournament.

Wow, that's a great shot!
I understand the atmosphere there was electric; what did yo think of the game?
Do you go to any of the Phoenix games?

I went to the Auckland Club final a few years ago at North Harbour Stadium and won a match ball. Still have it too!

NZ will soon be part of the space race with it's own rocket. Yes really!

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Have you guys noticed that Vodafone is selling the F100 otherwise known as Jalou? Bit expensive in my opinion.

Posted by carkitter
I had noticed that. I though a F100 was an american pickup...

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Heh, yeah. Not the best name. I think Vodafone would be better off using the names like Jalou and Aino like Telecom does. I think they are more memorable, plus they're there for a reason.

Posted by carkitter
I see that Vodafone also has the Naite masquerading as a J105. Nice little replacement for the G502 with styling reminiscent of the K610. $349 is a reasonable introductory price, looking forward to it going under $300.
Edit: Hiding on page 2 is the Satio! at $1199

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah the price isn't bad on that one. Plus it's a Green Heart phone which is pretty cool. I just don't get how Jalou can be $400. The non-Dolce & Gabbana one isn't anything special in my opinion.

EDIT: Did you check the second page?!

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/sho[....]&skuId=sku6710307&voucherCode=

Not bad...

EDIT 2: Yeah you edited first, ok.

Oh I forgot to mention...

On Friday I think I saw the Google Streetview car driving through West Auckland.
I didn't see it for long but it looked like a dark sea-green hatchback with black poles on its roof and a camera on top at least 2m off the ground.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah somebody I know (can't remember who it was now) said they saw one driving round Christchurch. They said they pulled the fingers at it.

Posted by carkitter
2 Degrees magic top up just got magicker.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yep and they have their first SE phone. And it's very overpriced. And apparently I can't link to it because of the way their website is set up (it's the W395 anyway).

Considering it isn't even A2, it's SE's cheap phone OS and you can get say, Naite for $349 or a W595 for $399 on Vodafone, 2degrees' price seems like a straight rip-off.

EDIT: Apparently carkitter is always one step ahead of me. Thanks for updating the phones section in the first post mate.

i knew someone whos job was to drive a google car around all day taking photos. Alot of equipment in those cars!

Ok, can you guys help me out here. I'm looking for a hsdpa modem, can be usb or ethernet, one thats not slow like vodem, and ideally has ability to connect an external antenna. And not too expensive.
Thanks

Posted by carkitter
Is the Vodem slow?
There are 4 Vodem's - the 3.6 Mbps model, the white 7.2Mbps Vodem Stick, the black 7.2Mbps Vodem Stick with 2.0Mbps upload and a new one with 21Mbps HSPA+ capability. All are perfectly adequate and only resrticted by the network speed in your area.
At present, using a phone as modem is just as good. Most decent new phones support 7.2Mbps/2.0Mbps HSPA+. XT look like they'll be first to 21Mbps but I would be wary of signing a contract with Telecom and ending up on out of date technology as often happens to Telecom customers.

iPhone customers are still getting 3GB extra per month. Add that to a 7.2Mbps iPhone 3Gs and you've got quite a sweet deal. iPhone tethers nicely too, especially with W7.

I don't think the external aerial is needed these days. Tests I've done show minimal signal loss in urban areas. Only the PCMCIA card modems have aerial connections and new laptops don't have PCMCIA card slots any more.

BTW, did you guys know that Dell NZ sells Alienware laptops from their online store? I specced a fully decked out model with Core 2 Quad extreme, 8GB RAM, 1GB graphics, W7 Ultimate, Blueray player, changable backlighting colours and full warranty and it came to 11 grand. What a machine! Wish I could buy it...

Yes, the huawei e220, the original vodem is very slow, runs at 6KB/s in the auckland cbd connected to HSDPA network.

Posted by carkitter
My e220 went on a go slow too, send it in for repair.
I heard many complaints about Vodafone's 3g speed in the CBD but tests I have done with speedtest.net give a 1Mbps+ result - 1.2Mbps with V640i, 1.7 with the iPhone. Speedtest.net is not good for testing very fast 3G speeds because the test file is too small, it's over before 3G gets up to full speed (which takes longer than with a landline connection.)

Well I will be testing it with the vodem sim card in my phone. Hopefully it won't go at 6KB/s
