Sounds good! I reckon 21" is about all you need for a computer monitor. Might as well hook it up to a TV if you're gonna go bigger!

Posted by carkitter
21" is plenty big enough, even 18" is pretty luxurious as far as screen real estate goes.

I'm pretty happy with my Vaio even though its 14.1" is a little tight sometimes. I can see me keeping this long term and my next computer will probably be a DIY desktop project.

Anyone notice Vodafone are advertising C903 for $499 ($379 on contract)?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Uh yeah. Remember me thinking about buying one a few weeks back?

Posted by carkitter
Doh! Saw it in a brochure over the weekend and thought it was new.

Woo, just had my new PSP Go delivered. It's pretty sweet. Apparently now they can connect to your phone via bluetooth to use your data connection. Might try it out sometime!

Posted by yea g
Good for you. Hopefully it will eventually be custom firmwared, then I might consider getting it

Nice. Bet it won't be able to share an iPhone connection though.

Posted by carkitter
Might have to pop in to a Sony Style store to confirm that...

iPhones support tethering don't they? I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Posted by carkitter
iPhone's support tethering to a PC/Mac which is running iTunes, dunno if the PSP would work.
Bear in mind that the iPhone still doesn't support BT file transfer.

Edit: BTW, under pressure from the media, Vodafone have extended the 'extra 3GB data per month free on iPhone plans' until the end of October. Watch this space.

Do you think that they might just keep that offer on? If, as you say, they are being pressured by the media I think they will be keen to impress and maybe score some points with a media who currently seems to be firmly on 2degrees' side.

Posted by carkitter
I guess it depends on how much it costs them. The most I used in a month was 800MB and I was trying, honest.
But now that I have access to wifi at 9Mbps and 3G reception here in this West Auckland suburb peaks at 500kbps, I don't use it so much. I bet most others will struggle to best 500MB too. If that's the case, then they'll probably keep the deal around because it makes life easy for iPhone owners and hard for Telecom.

I may be moving into the CBD soon so an extra 3GB will come in handy, especially with Vodafone's 21Mbps upgrade happening this month.

The G705 is on TradeMe now. I need the extra cash. Reserve is $250 which is a great deal if you know anyone interested.

Another day another Tsunami warning...
(No disrespect meant to any Samoan viewers)

It's possible a Tsunami might hit Northland in 10 mins, but after several false alarms I'd be very surprised if it did.
ETA to Auckland is 3:30 - 4:15pm or not.

Posted by carkitter
I've had a offer of a swap: My G705 for an iPhone 2G 8GB. Assuming the iPhone is in good nick, That's a pretty good deal IMO as it has Wifi and I have access to wifi in several places. It would probably become my girlfriends phone... She is cursed with a Motorola and that's something I've been planning to remedy.
I really could do with the money for some bills, do you think I should pursue a swap?

Posted by yea g
Meh, I tried my friends second hand iPhone 2g and its not that great. The 3gs that I tried in an apple store is much faster than the 2g

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
This could be mine very soon.

Posted by yea g
Hmm... I wonder how long till they get satio...

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Probably pretty soon, they seem really quick. To be honest I don't have much interest in Symbian though.

Posted by yea g
Well, Ill either get a satio, or an iPhone. The reason I want a smartphone is that I would like to start coding apps. I could start java but I don't really like the limitations and smartphones also have awesome screens

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah true. I gotta say I was pretty surprised by Aino's price, even for Expert Infotech. I'm still interested in an iPhone but probably to a lesser extent due to the higher price and the camera. I've been using my C902 camera a bit lately and wouldn't want to downgrade.

We are winners again!

See here!

Congratulations guys. Your help with the first post is greatly appreciated!

I'll update the first post later tonight.

satio is looking quite good i must say. still not convinced by full touch yet though. but most likely i'll get satio next, not for a few months though. will wait for the price to come down a couple of hundred us$ first. be interesting to see when one of the networks gets hold of it, it'll probably be selling though for $1500+ i'd say.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah I'd say so. $1500 for Satio sounds reasonable when you look at Vodafone's X1 price. Of course it isn't actually reasonable. Almost bought Aino this evening. Will give it another day's thought though because apparently Expert Infotech's website thinks I have an invisible item in my cart which they're charging me extra shipping for! I have contacted them.

Just looking at the SE NZ website, it shows the 'Satio a', the 'Aino a' and the 'X2 a' as well as their 'non a' counterparts. To me that suggests both Vodafone and Telecom will be picking up these three phones.

Posted by carkitter
Yeah, I noticed that too.
The competition from XT has really caused Vodafone to smarten up their act as far as sourcing phones in a timely manner.

I don't think Satio will sell for $1500 because most people will percieve it to be a high end feature phone not a smartphone and $1300 is about the limit of what people will pay for a phone that doesn't have access to an App Store and doesn't come with a data plan.

Anyone smart enough to be able to make use of the X1's feature set will also be smart enough to source it from an importer. Vodafone need to get real and understand that the best way to sell these expensive phones is with a voice/txt/data plan and a decent subsidy ala iPhone. $120 subsidy for and other manufacturers is a joke alondside $480 iPhone subsidy and benefits like 3GB data and 1000 PXT per month free.

Posted by yea g
But on there, they have w995 and w995a. Only the w995a is being sold right now (by telecom nz if you didn't know)

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I noticed that one too. Maybe Vodafone will get it later, but then notice how the C905 is on there? It's not very accurate obviously. I have put the C905 in the "Not coming to NZ" section of the first post.

Posted by carkitter
From speaking with SE NZ, I get the impression the phones are available for Telecom, Vodafone and 2Degrees to choose from but whether the option is taken up is a different matter. The networks probably get a couple of devices for testing and evaluation purposes and maybe a large corporate could twist their arms for a particular model if the features are unique, but otherwise we just have to wait, or buy from an importer.

Call/txt phones are endlessly popular and are mostly bought on price. Feature phones though are a limited market and just how many 5.0Mp camphones do Vodafone think they can shift per month? This limits the number of models that a network will support and unfortunately NZ is a small market, which is not inclined to spend much on phones/services and even less on mobile data. The exception of course is the iPhone which practically sells itself and is still gathering momentum.

Yeah I agree, and I got the same feeling after I read about your conversation with SE too.

Speaking of SE I have ordered myself a new phone. An SE U10i Aino from Expert Infotech.

Oooh! congrats!
Can't wait until playtime 2009 then?

I wish I had enough money for any phone right now. I dont think $14.50 could even afford a sciPhone

Why what's happening in Playtime?

Haha I wouldn't be so sure... Those sciPhones are pretty cheap (and nasty). I'm sure your C905 is better though... How is the C905 by the way?

Posted by yea g
God I'm lazy, its still broken. I really need to get round to fixing it or sending it back

Anyway satio is looking rather cheap at the moment, the £400 price some people have paid is about $870NZ. Much cheaper than iPhone!

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah, shall we take bets on how much Expert Infotech will have it for?

Posted by yea g
well ima go for $950. That sounds about right

Posted by carkitter
put me down for $999

Edit: The NZ dollar is very high ATM, now is a good time to import a phone...

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I didn't think Aino's price was that bad at all. Quite pleased.

Alright I'm going to bet $1049. There, we're all $50 apart.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Anyone else noticed how damn cheap the other phones at Expert Infotech are at the moment? Examples:

W980: $323
T700: $262
C902: $363
X1: $669

Posted by yea g
Its a shame that people still buy branded expensive phones from the vodafone shop. You pay like double price for some crappy vodafone branding all over the phone, absolutley nuts!

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah exactly. And all it takes is a quick trip to the Vodafone website to get some settings sent to your phone and you have a cheaper, un-gimped phone without ugly menus. Plus you have more choice and can get them quicker though the import route. Seems like common sense to me.

Unfortunately I'm still waiting on my Aino. Hopefully tomorrow!

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
So much for that C903 deal on Vodafone being just for the month of September. I don't see them ever raising the price back up! I haven't seen anyone using a C903 yet either.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Aino arrived! I'll have my impressions and photos later.

Posted by yea g
Congrats. Does the touch screen only work in media menu or does it work all over the phone? When they announced it they said something about that but I really dont think they would limit it like that

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
They did limit it. An easy way to think of it is that the phone is non-touchscreen until you close it and turn it on it's side, then it becomes a touchscreen multimedia centre where you can access music, videos, pictures, the camera and radio. At first I was skeptical but then I came round to the idea, and now I own the thing.

It would be nice to have the option of full touch, but having now used the phone I think it's great, and there are many things that wouldn't have worked in touch screen anyway, like some of the applications. I can't imagine attempting to use the GPS with a touchscreen.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
So I guess I win?

Pretty pricey.

Posted by yea g
Wow, seriously? The NZ dollar just keeps on getting stronger, how does that not affect their prices?
