You absolutely do not want to live in Northcote. PM coming your way.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Cheers for the PM mate. Much appreciated.

We're not sure if we will even be on the North Shore, but it's probably preferable.

Posted by carkitter
If you choose not to live on the Shore then you and your girlfriend will need to share a car to AUT then on to Massey. You'll then come to learn all about Auckland's rush hour traffic. However your brother will likely be able to benefit from the availability of train services which are miles cheaper and more pleasant than buses.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
So the trains don't go to the North Shore?

That will be a bugger for him if we decide to flat there. I am the only one of us with a full drivers license, although I won't be wanting to drive too much in rush hour traffic.

Nope.
When the train tracks were laid, North Shore was an area completely covered by orchards and a few tiny rural communities next to a couple of beaches which were holiday destinations for the rich. Then they built the Harbour Bridge in 1958 and all hell broke loose - everyone wanted to live on the Shore. Within 10 years the 4 lane bridge was at full capacity needing to be extended (as it was in the early eighties) but transport development has always been miles behind transport needs. One of Auckland's greatest mayors wanted to install a light-rail system in the 70's but the ratepayers wouldn't pay for it, and now we're up the creek without a paddle...

Catching a bus from the Shore to the City won't be a problem, just getting around the Shore by bus could be a hell of a lot better.

You could always study at Lincoln or Victoria...

Traffic in Auckland is a fact of life. You can't escape it even on the weekends, and don't get me started on parking...

Nope. Massey in Auckland is the only place in New Zealand where I can study Transport Design.

Thanks for all this info. It is going to be really helpful when it comes to decision time!

Travelling to the big smoke aye? Hope everything works out for you! Whats funny is that im moving to chirstchurch next year to flat with some good mates of mine I finish my degree at the end of this year so goodbye to palmy

Posted by carkitter
Hey, while everyone is shuffling around, perhaps we should have a get together in January in Auckland?
I could enquire with SENZ as to whether we could pay a visit to their head office? We'd have to be well behaved though...

Posted by yea g
Do they even need a head office in NZ??? They do little, if any advertising for itself, all they really seem to do is answer the phones!!

Posted by carkitter

Well, there goes that idea...

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
So carkitter, did you get anything new for your birthday?

Posted by carkitter
Well I got something I've been after for a while: an egg poacher which is not that easy to come by these days.
And I got some of my favourite licorice, plus my kids drew me some pictures. Licorice is something I used to give my dad as it was a favourite of his too. The G705 makes up for some of the rough times lately.

Anyone want to buy a Dongling D801 (Xperia X1 copy)?

How could you say to your friends, "Check out my Dongling!" with a straight face...

So you guys are all voting in the Esato awards right? Hopefully some of us New Zealanders (and maybe this thread) can score an award or two!

Posted by carkitter
I haven't yet but I will later.

BTW, this post comes courtesy of my Vaio notebook running Windows 7 RTM Professional.

Posted by yea g
Well, I would use RTM but...

... You can't upgrade from windows 7 (RC) to windows 7 (RTM), so I would have to do a complete reinstall. Ill do it when RC stops working

Posted by carkitter
I have voted.

Windows 7 is beginning to grow on me. At first I didn't see much difference but not I'm finding everything has been simplified and using my Vodem is a whole lot easier.

iTunes 9 is a pain in the butt. Over the weekend I had to download 90MB of iTunes, another 240MB of firmware 3.1 for the iPhone, then I had to save all my music into iTunes again because iTunes 8.2 (I just couldn't bring myself to download 8.3 ) kept forgetting all my music and would start up empty every time, then I had to sync the iPhone which worked on the 5th attempt and then iTunes proudly announced that my computer is not authorised to access some of my iPhone Apps and they have been omitted from my iPhone.

An to add insult to injury, the Voice recorder bug that is preventing me from accessing a VERY IMPORTANT INTERVIEW I conducted for an assignment which is coming due soon, has not been fixed.

Unfortunately the G705 can't double as a smartphone as far as quickly managing multiple email accounts, providing GPS functions on my cycling trips or even being readable in bright sunlight so it looks like I shall have to persevere with the iPhone at least until a decent Android competitor hits NZ.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Well I have sort of been thinking about an iPhone as my next phone. As long as I get a 3GS, I am not missing out on anything really... The phone is finally up to speed. I am completely undecided on whether I'll drop SE for Apple or wait for Aino or see what comes out at MWC, but the iPhone is finally tempting me. So long as I pick it up cheaper from somewhere.

Posted by carkitter
The iPhone is a great phone for Uni students actually.
Manage multiple email accounts with ease, read documents, useful apps for alarms/notetaking/calenders, really good browsing via University wifi... aGPS so you don't get lost in the big smoke...
If you can afford $52 per month (iPhone 40 plan with 2 Bestmates) or $60 for an iPhone 40 + Vodafone Family, you'd be away laughing with a 16GB handset from $499/$699. Even better, if they decide to keep the 3GB extra data, you'll have tethering for your Mac or Netbook.
[ This Message was edited by: carkitter on 2009-09-15 06:33 ]

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
See that's just it. I can easily afford an even more expensive plan right now, but next year as a student I doubt I will be able to afford even a $30/month one, even with a part time job assuming I can find one. So a plan is sort of out of the question. Do you know anywhere that sells maybe an import 3GS for cheaper?

Posted by yea g
Oh man.... iPhone is tempting me aswell. Or maybe satio.... hmm.....
I need a decent prepay data plan first. 1GB for $20 sounds reasonable enough compared to what we have now.

Posted by csew005
Wow there's a NZ forum? I've been focused on the general SE forum and completely missed this!

Just ordered a SE C901, can't wait for it to arrive!

Posted by carkitter
@csew005
Welcome, where are you from?

@M-O
You could put some money aside now to help cover 24 x $40 payments ($960) or 24 x $60 ($1440) + the cost of the iPhone. Prepay really misses the point of the iPhone TBH because without a decent chunk of 3G data, you're better off with an iPod Touch.

Good point actually. I have been saving for a while now, and work just paid out a huge chunk of holiday pay because I signed a new contract. I'll wait til the end of the year before I buy anything and I'll see what kind of financial situation I'm in.

I'm from Akl. Good to see this forum is very active

Has anyone had any experience with the C901?

Welcome mate. I haven't had any experience with the C901 cause it is not a phone that has officially come out here, though importers seem to have stock. I have an older C902 which is a great phone, and the C901 only improves on the C902 (despite the naming suggesting the opposite). I've heard great things about the camera on the C901, some saying it's SE's best camera yet. So you're on to a winner I'd say.

Posted by csew005
Yea the camera and flash are top priority for me. Not a big fan of the larger touchscreen types, so this candybar should suit me well.

Importers haven't been stocking C901 that much, Expert Infotech had one in black, but i'm after a silver.

Will let you guys know how it is.

Nice one mate, where are you sourcing one from?

Posted by csew005
I'm getting mine from Digi Parallel Imports. E Info were slightly cheaper, but Digi is closer to where I live so its easier if I have any issues.

Posted by carkitter
Another price revision at Expert Infotech:

G705 is gone.
T700 selling for $289 (Everyone go and buy one now! )
G900 selling for $358 (New Zealand's cheapest 5Mp AND cheapest Wifi phone ever?)
G700 selling for $280 (New Zealand's cheapest ever touchscreen phone?)

Wow those are ridiculously cheap! I wouldn't personally by a IQ phone now that the platform is dead, but they'd be a great buy for a more casual smartphone user.

Posted by carkitter
You know, I'm quite tempted to put the G705 back on TradeMe and buy a T700 with the proceeds...

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Really? And lose your WiFi, etc?

Posted by carkitter
Well after the iPhone, browsing and email on an SE device is rather cumbersome and disappointing so I was thinking a little eye-candy was in order.

Was in the CBD today and saw one of those xperia ads. Said something like I my different lives

Posted by carkitter
Wish I'd known you were in town, I was cycling along Tamaki Dr this morning.

Posted by yea g
I went to town just to get lunch and a new broadband modem (old one brokeded). I was only there for about 30 minutes

And anyway, I couldn't have told you, had no internet connection all this morning and some of last night

I read online that there is a big storm coming. It has already caused some damage in OZ and is expected to deepen as it crosses the Tasman. Ready for another wet weekend?

Posted by csew005
I is got my C901!! So far very happy with it, great thin compact candybar, great for txting and taking random pics. Love the Xenon flash.

Can anyone please help out with this? I'm trying to get Google maps running, but keep getting a "Network Unavailable" message saying

"This application requires a data connection. Please contact your network operator, or visit www.google.com/gmm/configure.html on your computer for more info"

I've tried the google site, which downloads an update for web browser, but no success. Anyone have any ideas?

Also, I can't figure out how to top-up my prepay account via credit/debit card. Not sure if this is particularly to do with the C901 or something else, but any help would be great.

Posted by carkitter
Congrats! Post some pics

If the phone is an import then you'll need to down load some network settings from the website. Try the NZ support page for your phone first but I have a feeling you won't find anything for C901 there so try the C903 support page as well. Do you have a data portion to your prepay plan?

Are you on Vodafone or 2Degrees? If Vodafone, you'll need to log in to My Vodafone for credit card payments.

Posted by csew005
Pics will be up as soon as I learn how to take decent pics

I tried downloading the settings from the Singapore C901 site, which seemed to be ok as it had NZ and then Vodafone in the drop down menus. But no luck so far.

I'll try the NZ site now.

As for prepay, I'm with Vodafone. And as for My Vodafone, I registered for that a few months back. I forgot my password, so I keep getting a new one sent to my phone...which never works So I gave up on that.

Posted by csew005
Actually this is where I'm going for network settings. Is this right?

The strange thing is that I can do a web search using the web browser all fine and dandy, just google maps won't work

EDIT: Do I require a data portion for my prepay account to be able to use google maps?

Hey dude, try using this:

http://www.vodafone.co.nz/help/device-support/sony-ericsson/

It isn't up to date, but the K850i settings should work absolutely fine. It is what I used to set up my import C902.

And congratulations on the new phone! I look forward to seeing a few pictures.

EDIT: Last time I tried using the SE website to do my settings, it didn't work at all. So yeah, I wouldn't use that.

Oh and carkitter, it's already pouring with rain here. I guess the storm has hit!

Yes, that's relevant. I'd try the GPRS setting first then one of the Gateways if that doesn't work.

If you have a problem with My Vodafone, give Voda a call on 777. It'll cost you $1 for the call but c'est la vie...

Glad you got it sorted mate.

I remeber when the asia pacific forum only had about 5 topics that were bumped to the new posts page everyday. Right now, all those free wap tutorials in engrish are bumping our little thread right down near the bottom. Maybe they should just have 1 thread, in proper english, on all the free wap tricks, or maybe their phone company will realise and fix it.

Anyways, did I mention I got a new monitor? aoc f22. Its full HD but only 21", but thats fine with me. Works great with windows 7 and with ps3 using a DVI>HDMI cable. Very good for $230
