2 Degrees auctioned off 85 popular numbers for a children's charity recently. You may be out of luck.

Mention the fact you might leave Vodafone when you cancel the plan, and sit back and watch while they throw offers at you. It's great!

You might end up staying on Vodafone if they offer you anything good enough.

A Vodafone rep called yesterday trying to get her to sign up to a 2yr term.
I was going to cancel my plan when Super Prepay was announced; the deal they offered made me change my mind.
So we'll see.

Yeah I saw that, but there's got to be some vaguely memorable ones left. Some of the ones they auctioned weren't all that great.

What about 022 OLI RULZ ?
Or 022 YEA GEEE ?
Or 022 ESATO NZ ?

I might try 022 CARKTTR ...

If one of you guys buy one of the above, pm me and I'll delete the post...

Yeah, I have a few ideas but none that are very stand out. I'm annoyed that my name is 6 letters and not 7! Though I bet it would be taken already if it were 7 letters. Might try 0224OLIVER.

Haha, I didn't realise it could be read that way... Ok maybe I'll rethink.

Great post in your new thread there carkitter. I'll add it to the first post of this thread when I'm on my Mac, probably later on today. I didn't want to spoil your work by posting this there, so I'm doing it here.

Perhaps you could add in a few more details of XT's texting deals. Like the $12 for 600 texts to any mobile and so on.

Also, possibly the fact that Telecom gives you 25% extra for free with any top-up, and that 2degrees are doing their 'magic' thing.

Otherwise awesome stuff, and I'll let you know if I think of anything more.

Posted by carkitter
Haha! you beat me to it.
The post is here. Check it out!

If anyone has any more info to add, PM me or post here.
@M-O
Are my comments on Chch and Dunedin passable? Could you suggest any better comments?
I want to keep it simple, there are plenty of links for people to use.
Added some info about the top-up bonuses.

The Vodafone forum gets a lot of questions about this stuff and it's kinda awkward to answer in a non-partisan way when overseen by Vodafone staff...

Nice one.

Perhaps Dunedin could be described as cold (southern-most major city) and a student haven?

Christchurch is called the garden city, but otherwise English suits it fine. Not much to brag about here.

I might invoke howls of protest from Invercargil, they like to claim the southernmost city title.

I have added your new thread to the first post twice.

Disappointing that we can no longer have coloured text on Esato. Personally I think it makes the first post look a little weird.

I'll give it an overhaul at some stage fairly soon.

carkitter - or not including palmy! No honestly dont change it, noone will be visiting there anyway!

Very detailed post you made there. Dont think many will be asking questions!

I might sound abit slow but i only realised the extreme cost of cancelling your contract on telecom! My flatmate said its $185 for her to break it! (shes on telecom, 12 month plan). I checked the cost to cancel mine on vodafone (similar plan and also 12 month) and its $65!

Posted by yea g
According to posts on geekzone, right now you can only get numers starting with 0220 and then 6 digits (0220 XXX XXX)

Is it not dependent on how close to the end of your contract you are too? I remember it was when I ended my contract a few years ago.

Yup it still is. Sorry forgot to mention that my flatmates contract was on the lowest cancellation fee (shes a good 6 months into hers) and mine was on the highest (im only 3 months into mine). The worst is that on telecom, you have to pay $185 even if its your last month! and before your 7th month its even higher!

Okay...
1) who else is watching Telethon?
2) has anyone else got their 2 Degrees SIM? I see yea g has one, how's the reception?

Posted by yea g
Reception is good. It was quite glitchy when I first put my sim card in, but I think have determined the cause to be that I am the first one to use the 2degrees tower in kumeu. lol
How you may ask? Well, I have learned that the LAC (displayed in my phone explorer in other>monitor net to the cell id) is actually the number your phone is assigned to on that tower. On vodafone that number reads 0261 (so there are about 261 phones connected) on 2degrees that number is 0001 (yes, thats right, my phone is probably the only one)

Was watching the telethon but thought I needed a bit of internets time. Will go back to watching it soon
[ This Message was edited by: yea g on 2009-08-08 10:03 ]

Posted by carkitter
Hmmm...
LAC on my V800 for 2 Degrees is 100 but on Vodafone it's 6D07.

LAC stands for Location Area Code.

Posted by yea g
well I heard/read someone say on some forum that the lac was the number your cell phone was on the tower but 27911 sounds like too many. Oh well, looks like im wrong again

Posted by carkitter
Well it sounded okay to me until I saw the code 6D07.

Posted by yea g
Seriously, how hard do sony ericsson make it to change sim cards??!?? The glossy plastic that my 2degrees sim is made out of makes it almost impossible to get out, I had to use pliers!!

Posted by lel0uch
Bra Ta Ta Ta Tattt !!! Kablam !!

Posted by yea g
Gah, the damn thing stopped working.

Edit: working again. Strange

yea g, do you think that maybe you're outside 2degrees coverage so you're roaming on Vodafone? Possibly their roaming is a little dodgy at this stage...

I didn't watch any of the Telethon but I heard much of it was quite amateurish and boring.

And no 2degrees sim. I think my postman stole it...

Telethon is supposed to be amatuerish! It's where people get out and do all sorts of weird/wonderful/crazy stuff to raise money for a good cause. It has aspects of a 23hr talent show, and really requires some big personalities to carry it. I don't think Mike McRoberts comes anywhere close to Mr Telethon: Peter Sinclair from the 80's. My wife and I thought Brooke Howard-Smith stole the show quite frankly.
2 Degrees got a lot of publicity from the show, sponsoring the celebrity call out and giving away $400 phone and credit packages.

BTW M-O it seems Chch is becoming a real dodgy place to live with another death over the weekend and parents and authorites shaking their heads over the constant senseless violence.
On a lighter note, 2 Degrees did say it may take a week to get the SIM cards out.

Posted by yea g
Im 100% sure its on 2degrees' own towers, Vodafone doesn't have edge for one thing, and antoher thing is they have no reception at all in my room

Posted by soane28
I got my sim a couple of days ago, tryed it and it seemed alright, considering im not by the main cities. My mate also just moved to 2 deg and lives in palmy and it works fine.

Posted by carkitter
Is this Vodafone's best range of SE phones ever? It must be getting close. Shame W980 has disappeared from the lineup.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
It sure is looking good carkitter, especially with the C903 back (even though i don't like it). It's just good to see a good, almost full range... And surprisingly the W910i is still there (and still over-priced)!

Perhaps this could be useful - Cellphone tower locations just import them to google earth and have a look

Wow!
Were did you find that? AFAIK that's top secret info that Vodafone refuses to give out.
Simply stunning to be quite honest.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Might have to have a look when I get home. I'm not able to while at work!

Posted by carkitter
Those locations confirmed what I already thought. I'm 300m from a Voda and 2D site, 600m from another Voda and XT site and 1.3kms from a third Voda site. There's a lot more XT 2100MHz sites than I thought, especially on the Shore.

Posted by yea g
Apparently they are from MED's database (whatever that is) and I found them on geekzone. The guy that posted them (full credits to him) I think has downloaded the locaitons of each cell tower and put them into a kml file. He does say that not all towers are on there because some don't give co-ordinates
[ This Message was edited by: yea g on 2009-08-14 05:49 ]

MED will be the Ministry of Economic Development. They are the government department who got dragged into the Vodafone v Telecom court dispute over interference from the XT network.

Today I was surprised to see a HUGE at least 20 metre tall billboard in Christchurch (on the side of the Copthorne Hotel on Durham St for an CHCHers) advertising the SE X1. Could this be the beginning of some proper SE advertising in NZ?

I think I was mostly surprised that they were advertising the X1 though, seeing as it's due for replacement soon in overseas markets and probably isn't the type of phone that's going to sell well in New Zealand in my opinion.

Posted by yea g
Which company was advertising it? Surely not NZ themselves?????

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
It was SE. It was definitely in their advertising style, and I'm not sure because I drove past it quite quickly, but it may have had an "I Something" slogan on it.

Posted by carkitter
I hope the shock didn't cause you to crash your car...

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Of course not! But I may go past it again today on my way to work, so hopefully I'll get a better look.

Posted by yea g
What next? A NZ store that sells unbranded phones/reasonably priced accessories???? if so then

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Well I went past today and managed to get a photo as I was going past. Not the best quality or angle because it's a pretty grey day here (now raining) and because I only got one chance of getting a photo while not moving.

Also I guess that because of new laws, I was risking a fine if a cop saw me!

Larger version here. The billboard says "I my different lives"

It was easier to upload the photo to Flickr from my phone than it was to access Flickr from my work computer to post this!

As I understand it... the ban isn't in effect until November, but you can still get done for wreckless driving if holding the cellphone causes you to drive erratically, even witout the ban. The difference is that after the ban, if sighted using a phone you can be prosecuted even before exhibiting dodgy driving.

On a similar note, someone I knew who'd had to much drink to drive and decided to sleep it off overnight before driving home, was prosecuted for drink driving as a result of having the keys in the ignition to listen to the radio. The person was fast asleep at 3am when they were busted.

Better to get a taxi and come back later for the car.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Thanks carkitter. Because I'm working so much, and at night too, I haven't been able to catch the news in a few weeks at least. I didn't know the new laws aren't in effect til November. I never use my phone while driving anyway, apart from today of course.

That sounds a bit harsh though with the drink driving even though he/she was just listening to the radio!

According to Vodafone:

"On average, Vodafone Prepay customers save $375 a month on call & TXTing with BestMate."

They reckon the average BestMate customer uses $375 worth per month. Jeeze, some people must be milking it to hell. I know I probably use about $50 but no more.

Posted by carkitter
Those who 'milk it' to the extent of $375+ are likely talking while driving. I worked with a truck driver who was on his mobile non stop...

Posted by soane28
should use my bestmate abit more then!

Hearing about Bert Nordberg taking over the helm of SE is prob the best news ive heard from SE in ages! Anyone else thinking "about f*&%ing time"??

This is a good read, prob old now:
