Yeah i saw the 2 degrees ad, go them hope they absolutely own the competition. Even my dad said he will be joining just because they are the underdog!

yea g - nice shots!

Nice photos guys.

Haven't seen the ads yet, but I'll give them a watch soon. Did anyone else sign up for the free 2degrees $5 simcards? I did.

I did too.

Posted by yea g
Yep same here

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Nice one. I hope we all get one... They said they were limited.

Posted by yea g
If its a first in first served thing (which it probably is) then I should get one because I signed up a few seconds after the email arrived

Posted by soane28
oh no i obviously didnt sign up on their emailing list! Probably too late now?

Went and saw my old mate who works at vodafone in Gisborne today and asked him if i could play with the LG Arena. Luckily they had one in stock and everything is perfect - the UI is really good, very responsive touch screen, solid build quality....then i try texting. Complete disaster! For some reason the responsiveness goes out the window, and its unbelievably slow to even get to the second letter! I thought it was just me and gave it to my mate to have a try and he found exactly the same. What a way to ruin the whole experience!

Oh well, im happy with the Renoir, was just curious and i guess curiousity killed the cat!

Posted by carkitter
@soane28
just sign up on the 2 Degrees website - you haven't missed out. I doubt I'll get one of the free SIM cards because I'm not on Prepay.

Apple breaks Vodafone's monopoly on official phones. What does this mean for SE's online shop?

Presumably you mean Vodafone's online shop.

I dunno, Vodafone's website won't let me into the iPhone section right now, but aren't the prices exactly the same? And I don't know about you guys but when I think of buying an iPhone, or anything Apple for that matter, I don't think of going to the Apple website. I'm more likely to hit up the Vodafone site or an official reseller site. So perhaps this is better in that they are covering all bases?

Nope. I mean the Official SE store not available to kiwis.

Apple's prices are $20 - $30 cheaper which is a shot across the bows of Vodafone considering manufacturers usually sell at RRP.
Also, this is the first manufacturer to sell phones independent of Vodafone. Perhaps SE NZ could grow some balls and open retail stores which sell phones for all networks?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Ah, now I understand your post.

I didn't realise Apple were undercutting Vodafone! Maybe this is the beginning of a price war between the two? Hopefully.

I very much doubt that we'll see the SE store here. At least not until it is rolled out in more major countries elsewhere.

Just pay for it like everyone else does.

About the iPhone thing:
Well sony NZ would be a good candidate for doing that. Currently they sell some vodafone SE phones

Posted by carkitter
According to the CellC site he linked to, 100MB is the equivalent of $NZ19.40 and 1GB costs $NZ55 making vodafoneNZ cheaper on both counts.

Sony Style already do a weak attempt at SE phones but I think dedicated stores would be a good way to showcase the myriad of features most owners don't know about or haven't tried. Plus all the cool accessories that usually get ignored.

Posted by yea g
Maybe you could start one

Posted by carkitter
Would love to, but realisticly, that's not going to happen. It'd be a good place to work though.

Thanks for your contribution, 1republic! Hi back!

Anyway, now that we got that over with, Vodafone appear to be sticking it to Telecom on the whole "getting new phones in quickly" thing, finally. C903 and T707 now on the online store at not-very-good prices.

$850 and $500 respectively in case you can't be bothered with the link.

Posted by yea g
Vodafone are going to have to reduce their prices alot. The C510 is an example, much cheaper on telecom, and with 2degrees coming they could loose a lot of customers.

Posted by carkitter
Plan subsidies for SE are only $120 compared with iPhone plan subsidies of $480 and iPhone plans include data (3GB of bonus data at the moment). A $480 subsidy on $40 24 month plans would improve SE's sales no doubt.

I'd like to see the Smart plans extended to any phone in the range and a $40 plan should include 60mins, 100 txt and 500MB, with a decent subsidy in exchange for a 2yr commitment. 2yrs is like a lifetime in this current economic climate.

Edit: Telecom are now offering a $600 credit to iPhone 3G s owners who switch to a $80 per month Telecom plan.

Damn, got only like 1gb bandwidth left atm and that somehow has to last me till the end of this month

Posted by carkitter
It's a mobile phone OS, we're talking 170MB. Anyway, done! Going offline to try it out. I won't be able to use it with a Vodem to go online. It should work with the free wifi at my local library tomorrow though...

Posted by yea g
I use about 400mb a day just browsing the internet (less on school days) so I really can't afford to download something more than a few mb if I want it to last till the end of the month

Posted by carkitter
I must have left something out as I got to the splash screen and no further. Trying again. I'll put updates on twitter rather than switch back and forth on the Vaio.

Everyone enjoy the earthquake(s)?

http://www.geonet.org.nz/earthquake/quakes/recent_quakes.html

Posted by carkitter
Sorry I missed it. Could you run it again?
Twitter is all abuzz! NZ's a trending topic.

Quake location: 45.75°S, 166.58°E (put that into Google maps), look out Hobart!

Apparently the Tsunami was a no-show.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yep Tsunami warnings are off. I was at work and didn't even feel it. I didn't hear about it til over an hour later from my girlfriend who was in the shower at the time. Apparently it was felt pretty strongly at my house though.

Posted by soane28
crazy aye! I still remember the Gisborne earthquake which was something like 6.3 very scary. all the windows in dads house were rippling as the earthquake went!

Posted by carkitter
We never get earthquakes in Auckland just mini tornados and the occasional landslide. We are overdue for volcanic activity though.

Posted by frankthetank
So it seems the seismographs were not reporting correctly last night, 7.8 according to USGS, which is I guess the reading they are going from now with all the latest reports? Second equal biggest in NZ since colonisation began!

Posted by carkitter
I'd be a bit worried about a discrepancy of 6.7 vs 7.8 on the recording equipment. 7.8 is more than 30x greater than 6.7 on the Richter Scale, which makes the Boxing Day 2004 quake of 9.2 truly scary.

It will be, give them about an hour.

Media 7 is split into 3 parts, all 3 were good tonight, only the last one was on Telco's.
[ This Message was edited by: carkitter on 2009-07-16 11:00 ]

Posted by carkitter
Media 7 spoke to two marketing people about the Telco ads and both were keen to perpetuate the myth that both companies are colluding to rip us off. I don't subscribe to this theory which seems to be widely held among the general populace. More likely is that Telecom has opted out of direct competition by staying with an analogue 025 system for as long as possible then switching to another ineffective and uncompetitive technology, CDMA. This has cemented Telecom in the now shrinking low-end of the market while Vodafone have been handed the bulk of the market on a silver platter including the high-end which has suddenly become a high profile cash-cow since the introduction of the iPhone 3G. Therefore, customers of both companies don't feel like they have any real alternatives. In the absence of real competition Vodafone have been innovative in services but conservative in pricing which is a shrewd strategy if not a favourite one with their customers.

Vodafone have moved their focus away from the 'mobile revolution' to become a holistic, well rounded telco incorporating mobile, landline and internet services and in becoming Telecom-like are now being treated much like we all treat Telecom - with contempt. Most of the criticism is unwarranted though in my opinion; their systems are under pressure from massive, rapid growth but customers seem to be impatient and unwilling to cut them some slack. I've personally found that Vodafone (when at fault) have always been generous with their account credits.

I am looking forward to 2 Degrees as is everybody, but because they don't have a landline infrastructure. This means it's in their best interests to concentrate on mobile services and pricing. Innovative pricing from them is VERY dependent on getting the Commerce Commission to tilt the playing field in their favour and that may not happen. If not, 2 Degrees have admitted they wont be able to be much different to Vodafone in pricing. Will the public still love them then?

Oh, and BTW there's not much kiwi investment in 2 Degrees these days; 20% I think.

Cheers for the link, it sounds interesting. I might give it a watch tomorrow when I'm more awake.

Posted by yea g
Its mostly just about the ads

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Anyone else notice that Vodafone removed the C903 about as quickly as they put it up? Weird.

Posted by yea g
Ok, just so you guys know, I joined twitter http://twitter.com/dasimpsonsrule

Noticed you watched Bruno yea g! What a weird movie! Gay porn anyone??

Beware of dodgy tech staff when taking your computer in for repair.

Posted by yea g
Well my computer never needs repairing because I always use high quality parts, and it gets outdated and replaced all the time. And I can fix it myself for much, much cheaper.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I don't keep anything personal on my laptops anyways. Plus I'm fairly careful so I doubt I'll have any major problems (touch wood).

Anyways, my girlfriend is as of yesterday the proud owner of a W508a on XT. I got it for her cause it's her birthday on Sunday. It's pretty nice I must say... I had a bit of a play with it yesterday and I'm a bit jealous. SE really have cleaned up A2 even since my C902. The phone feels solid and looks stunning in white and the exterior music controls are a nice touch too.
