Lol, 3 posts in a row. My bad.

The few guys that I told the texting and calling trick to about a month back, is it working for you guys now? It seems Vodafone may have put a stop to it...

It worked yesterday when I did it (yay). I wouldn't be suprised if they fixed it, quite a few people knew of an old number to text, 7, but they stopped that.

Hmm, well I might try again later this week to see. Lucky you though. Make the most of it I guess.

Damn you vodafone!!!
(from the vodafone website:

Hmmm... perhaps you should sign up to an Optus Australia iPhone plan.

I've been having trouble logging in. Anyone else?

I'm now a twit!

Many people already knew this, I'm told.

Yeah I'm on there too, but I don't like it so don't use it. As with any social networking sites.

Hahaha I think I was in a bad mood. Carkitter is doing better for followers than me!

Posted by yea g
Lol your twitter looks kinda like my bebo (a pile of trash)

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Hell yeah, and I intend to leave it that way.

Posted by yea g
Good, because if you didn't I would have to stab you with my ruler

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Well thank god I hate social network sites! Is it a sharpened ruler?

Posted by yea g
Its just a metal ruler and everyone is scared of it when I make stabing gestures towards them with it for some reason
[ This Message was edited by: yea g on 2009-06-25 10:17 ]

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Hey I would be too if it's a metal ruler! Those things hurt. In saying that though, I have a metal ruler myself so we could have a pretty intense duel.

Top 5 manufacturers in NZ according to IDC market research:

Nokia (47%)
Sony Ericsson
LG
Apple
RIM

Converged devices make up 18%.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Wow, I didn't think SE had second place! I would have thought Samsung would be second.

The SE T715 is coming to NZ by the way. Looks as though we might get most SE phones from now on, with Telecom and Vodafone both seemingly making an effort.

Posted by carkitter
The figures are based on phones imported into NZ in the first 3 months of the year. It doesn't say if it includes parallel imported phones but I would guess not. Vodafone doesn't sell many Samsung models and Telecom will have jettisoned it's Samsung CDMA phones in favour of SE phones for XT.

The iPhone numbers are surprising. With the ongoing support through firmware upgrades, further sales are likely to be new owners not current owners trading up to new models. Contrast that with the other makes who sell to the same people over and over.

Posted by yea g
I wouldn't be surpirsed tbh. At our school, the majority of phones are Sony Ericsson and samsung

Posted by carkitter
The Vodafone Online Store has run out of 8GB iPhone 3G so they are selling the 16GB for the same price.

Yes that's right. 16GB iPhone 3G in white or black without a plan reduced from $1129 to $979 while stocks last.
On an iPhone 40 plan reduced to $499.
On an iPhone 60 plan only $449.

And a free Docking Station worth $50 thrown in until July 15th or while stocks last.

iPhone 3G s available from July 10th:
16GB = $1179
32GB = $1379

Plan details and subsidies to be announced at launch. Is there any interest in photos/video of the NZ launch?
I don't expect it to be as big a deal as last time but if Vodafone are doing something special I might go along if you guys are interested.

BTW, HTC Magic (Android phone) is available on a multi-tiered call/txt/data plan just like the iPhone, called Smart 40, Smart 60, Smart 80 and Smart 130 (based on the price of the monthly plans). These plans are probably available for all smartphones going forward including the Satio when it's released.

I suspect more minutes and data are coming for the Smart/iPhone plans on July 10, given that the 3.0 firmware allows tethering via USB or BT and its very easy to do (via USB anyway).

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Still pretty steep though, unless you want to fork out for an expensive plan. And I'm surprised they didn't use the launch of the 3GS to create more publicity by dropping the price a bit. Even a $100 price drop would probably draw more people in. Instead they knocked the price up $50. Weird.

Posted by carkitter
The plans aren't expensive. I'm on one and I'm not made of money.
They're good value when you consider the cost of calls/txts/data in any other form and the subsidies make it very worthwhile.

I expect the new plans will be even better.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
A lot of people will disagree with you there.

Posted by yea g
Including me! I will not be satisfied till i get 1tb of bandwidth for $10 at a speed of 1GB/s

Posted by carkitter
But you guys are on Prepay. I think your argument is really all plans are expensive not iPhone plans are expensive.

Prepay doesn't give you anything. You even have to pay for the SIM card.

This is what I mean. You have to compare with Vodafone's other terrible offers to see the iPhone plans as "good". iPhone plans may be a better deal than the rest of Vodafone's plans, but compared to absolutely anywhere else in the whole world, all of Vodafone's plans including the iPhone ones are terrible. Paying anywhere over $60/month to run a phone is in my opinion a ripoff, especially with the minute amounts of data and text messages they give you.

Vodafone seem to think that when people pay more money for a plan, all they want is extra calls. They couldn't be much more stuck in 2001 if they tried. People want lots of text messages and lots of data, as well as calls, but Vodafone fail to bundle it in. These days calling is only a small part of what a mobile phone can do.

Give me unlimited data (like in the uk, so with a 1gb cap or something) for $10 a month and ill be happy.

I'd like an Optus iPhone contract or a Voda Uk plan but unfortunately their reception in Auckland is nil. Therefore I have to go with a NZ network provider like everybody else. Otherwise I'd be wishing for the impossible.

I took my kids to Hampton Downs today for the tour. Unfortunately it was very wet so we didn't get to see as much as we would have liked. In case you weren't aware, this is going to be NZ's best motor-racing venue.

Lovin' this track. There is a great deal of gradient to it and the corners are huge, fast and challenging. This track will suite very fast cars such as V8 supercars, A1GP, Toyota racing series and Porsche GT3's. I bet a road car with less than 300hp on this track will feel like a snail. I can't wait til it's finished.

Very cool carkitter. You're lucky to be within easy visiting range! I would love to visit, but as I live in Christchurch I think I'll leave it until a major event is on once it is complete. It will definitely be interesting to see the completed track and compare them to the shots you've taken.

Having been to Ruapuna a couple of times (I even based my year 13 painting portfolio at school on Ruapuna), I can't wait to see a real high class racing track in New Zealand. Ruapuna is great, but it's not really suited to anything bigger than national racing championships. Nothing international.

I have never seen so many sony ericsson phones in my life over in fiji! I have seen: K850, Z750, W890, XPERIA, C510, V640, K750, K800, K550, W850, P990! Most were tourists from Europe i guess.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Haha that's awesome. How was/is fiji? I bet it's a hell of a lot warmer than here!

Posted by yea g
Yes, its been very stormy here in auckland last night and this morning

Also I have some suggestions for the first post:
Fix the scrolling links (can't remember what there called) They got brokeded by esato and you only fixed the ones on the se portfolio.

It took a hour each way - 200km round trip. Traveling to Pukekohe is slightly less.
The next closest track is Taupo, 5hrs away.

@Soane28
Nice to have you back! What was the 3G reception like in Fiji? Were all those SE owners data roaming or searching for a signal?

My prize came today!

NO! none of these will be finding their way onto playtime! I've wanted a lanyard for ages!

I've taken pics but the camera is on charge so I'll upload them tonight.
Review of the MBS-200 is in progress.

Posted by yea g
Why did you get that prize for?

Posted by carkitter
Errr... back on page 61, last year... I mentioned trying to update the V640i on SEUS. Well, there was a competition running on the NZ website involving SEUS, so I entered it at the same time.

Then on the 14th May I received an email from Sony Ericsson saying that I had won a prize in the draw - an MBS-200 Wireless Speaker System. Today it arrived, along with a lanyard and a pen. Very happy! The speaker works great with my iPhone, I've always wanted an lanyard and the pen is cool too.

congrats carkitter! Always good to get something decent for free! I wouldnt mind those speakers too by the way

I didnt get global roaming for Fiji, wasnt there long enough to make use of it. I think they all had global roaming as alot of them were texting and ringing home. One british girl got a text from her mate back in england telling us of michael jacksons death. Was rather random esp how we were in the middle of nowhere and yet we found out about it!

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Congratulations carkitter. You got yourself a very nice prize there. I remember that competition... I entered it but didn't win.

@soane28: Yeah that news spread extremely fast. I think everybody knew within about 2 hours!

So will we be seeing some Fiji pictures taken by your LG?

Posted by carkitter
Wouldn't have minded taking home the big Wednesday prize the other week but these toys will do!

I said to my wife that $36M would allow me to get more than one McLaren F1 and she looked at me in horror!

Posted by fien
Congratulations carkitter .... have fun

Thanks fien!

Correction: Smart plans are only available for HTC Magic. Let's hope Voda makes them more widely available.

It's scary how cheap EI is getting, they must be trying to quit some stock.
