That's what I thought. Seems kind of an obscure choice for a first 8MPer. At least it shows they are a bit more dedicated to getting the latest phones in on time, but it makes me wonder where the three you mentioned are, if they are even coming.

Also, the other day I noticed that Telecom are using codenames for their releases. Well at least for the W705. On the advertising for it, it says "Sony Ericsson W705 (Rika)". This was in the actual store! I got a photo which I might upload later on.

Perhaps they are just following the trend with the other manafacturers (eg. Samsung i8510 innov8)

This is a good sign! It shows they've upped their game and are matching XT as they said they would. Competition is working so far!

Unbranded

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
It's only a dummy.

I'm quite sure Telecom is going to have at least some branding, similar to the live! right softkey on Vodafone branded phones.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
If anyone is keen for a very cheap low end Sony Ericsson phone, look no further.

EDIT: I spose it's not that great a deal compared to 1day's usual, but here's a heads up anyway.

EDIT AGAIN: Anyone get $1000 account credit today? See here. Surely they could have shared it out better than that. I mean how long does it take to use a grand?! I think more people would be more grateful if it was 10000 lots of $100 credit.

EDIT 3: Haha. K Vodafone is doing that Samsung 8 mega pixel a lot cheaper than expected! $899 launch price. I expected over $1000!

The million dollars is being given away on Thursday 28th.

Also, Vodafone CEO Russell Stanners will have an announcement to make on TV One's Breakfast show tomorrow morning about 7:30am. If you miss it, TVNZ on-demand should have the video up by about 9am. Otherwise, I suspect whatever it is will be all over the news...

Well so far, telecoms XT network has been only good for customers, and it hasn't even been released yet! Good on ya telecom

My bad. Oh well, good luck to you guys.

Before you start patting Telecom on the back, just think about where we'd be if Telecom had introduced a GSM network in 2001 instead of a CDMA network...

TBH the real impact will come when 2 Degrees arrive with a low-cost strategy and attempting to make mobiles a real alternative to landlines which is long overdue. The latter will take time to implement as it appears that Telecom is blocking 2 Degrees and the Commerce Commission will have to make a judgement on the matters involved. Unfortunately the ComCom is too busy ATM and it'll have to wait.

Edit: BTW, Vodafone is giving away a N85 every day during June when you top up your Prepay with 20 or more.

So anyone score some free credit? Carkitter, I'd say you'd be pretty deserving with the amount you pay them and the length of time you've been with them.

Posted by carkitter
Nothing yet...

Did you try entering your number on the site? It will likely end in disappointment, but if you wanna try...

And by the way, is it just me or does the guy in the video seem a little bit unprofessional? Seems like he could have rehearsed his lines a few more times.

Also, when did number porting become available in NZ? Because I'm seeing a few 027s come up in that thing in the link. As far as I know, number porting hasn't been available that long, so how can Vodafone be sure they are "loyal customers" as they put it?

Number portung was around 2007 I think. The networks can tell them apart, cause my perants are on vodafone with 027 numbers, and free weekends and txt2000 still count (as in I don't have to pay 20c a text)

@ M-Oli

The new Samsung is $120 cheaper if you sign up for a talker/texter plan, so under $800 for a brand new 8MP phone is not bad at all!

As for 2 Degrees I'm surprised to hear that Telecom is blocking them, as this is the brand name of NZ Comms you can see when you do a network search. Their towers are virtually all in so I don't see how they can be shut down?

And I didn't win $1000, then again I won a Sanyo 7400 in the Rock/Paper?scissors tournament Telecom had back a few years now, prerelease at $899 rrp! I guess I can't expect too much lol...

It's not the mobile network their blocking, it a lack of agreement over termination rates to landlines.

Also on the National Business Review site is some comments from an upset XT customer:

I have a XT SIM and E71 from TCNZ
I feel stupid I went out and purchased a E71 on a XT plan I have dropped 4 out of 6 calls today using the phone in my house. Never did that before on my Sanyo phone. So now I am testing the XT network for you telecom and not impressed. I will give it another week if not fixed I want my Sanyo phone hooked up again or another provider is looking better.

People ring me
Calls are not ringing on my phone but going to voice mail, Should this happen? I called my number from office phone and it did the same thing twice and then the 3rd time phone rung. What am I doing wrong??
Posted by Marc C again (not verified) at 02:53 pm on May 29, 2009

Called Telecom help desk
I was advised Telecom do not have SIM cards and my phone must be a Vodaphone handset and to call them. Now I am confused

I've heard some rumours too...

Apparently one of the first day release phones has had so many out-of-the-box failures that there has been a recall. Not sure of the model, but I was in Christchurch's brand new (and so damn awesome) Dick Smith store earlier tonight and they were still selling the W705 so I assume SE is safe.

Another rumour I heard is that using an iPhone on XT is causing trouble. The phone can send text messages but won't receive! People are saying there are terrible delays with things like activations too, due to overwhelming popularity. You'd think Telecom would have planned for this.

And I find it funny that there are so many dropped call complaints, when earlier tonight I saw a (terrible) Telecom ad in which Richard Hammond and some irritating woman were 'testing' (read: pretending to test) the network to see how much they had to do to make it drop a call. They ended up dropping the girl in the ocean in a container and the network still held up apparently.

A few things annoyed me about that ad: One was that even if they were testing the network, they were obviously doing it before it opened for public use, so the network could hardly have been under pressure. And two, surely there are other things that are more important than dropped calls. If dropped calls is a worry for your network, then surely that shows that you're incapable of running it. Thirdly, the testing was all done in and around Auckland, which is hardly going to be a low or bad reception zone due to it being their largest customer base in NZ. Completely ridiculous.

Personally I'm going to wait a month or two and see how the situation is then. But so far it looks to be a bad start from New Zealand's crappiest network.

@Mohammed-Oli

Have you (or any of the other members here) been having trouble with your HSDPA/3G connection recently? I sthis part of the interference problem? Because it's starting to wear thin with me... My GF is away for the weekend and I've been trying to video call her to show her some furniture I'm buying for our new place but no joy...

Posted by yea g
well, no, actually mines been fine (I never usually get 3g at my house anyway...) but I noticed around school its gotten better after that court case.

At home I've noticed I don't get HSDPA or 3G coverage as freely as I had been. I didn't even consider that it could be an interference problem...

You should call Vodafone, and provided you get through to a New Zealander, you might get free stuff!

so my flatmate just went and got a brand new SE W705 from the telecom store today. Very nice phone, its screen is brilliant. Its real small too didnt expect it to be that slim and small.

Posted by yea g
Yea, its got the screen like the c905's, which has an excellent screen.

Anyone think vodafone might be falsely advertising when they say "New Zealands first mobile with an 8 megapixel camera"? I live in New Zealand, and I had an 8 megapixel cameraphone before them...

Yeah you and Soane28 should both go sue Vodafone...

I have seen a few W705 dummies around and I gotta say I was quite impressed too. I really really hate the look of the G705 (which it is based on) and I know I said I didn't like the W705 when it was first announced, but after seeing it in the flesh I have changed my mind. Nothing spectacular, but nice all the same. I still hate the G705 though.

I tried out a W705 in-store on Day 1 of XT and I found it pretty nice too. Anyone tried T-World - Telecoms version of Vodafone Live! ?

not yet, should be interesting just waiting for my new SIM

Posted by yea g
So whos going to get the satio first?

Posted by carkitter
As keen as I was on the Idou, I'm thinking Aino at the moment. I like the combination of keypad and touchscreen.
BTW, V640i cheap at DSE -$199.
And save $200 on iPhone 8GB/16GB when signing on to an iPhone 40 24month plan. That makes the 16GB less than what I paid for my 8GB.

Remember when I said that one of Telecom's phones was recalled due to an overwhelming number of out-of-box failures? I just found out what phone that was... The C510a!

I wondered why I never saw it in Telecom stores.

Posted by JiSm
I transferred my 027 CDMA over to XT on saturday. Took untill Sunday evening to connect which was fine, but I have to use my K850! The X1 and C902 dont have 850mhz 3G! Gutted. Seen the W705 in action the other day too. A little bit ugly but nice to use. Went to see some old workmates in my old Telecom Store for the low down. Not as many coverage complaints as they were expecting! I can definately vouch for AMAZING HSDPA coverage. Having trouble getting correct access points etc configured. When My sim was finally connected, I was flooded with all these settings texts and only 1 worked - the rest were incompatible! They must just spam settings to every connection to try get everyone online (wap, mms, etc) without having to use customer services. Cheeky sods.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah I went into a Telecom store today and had a go on the W705 and C510 (no sign of any recall, so maybe it was just a rumour). They are quite nice and its good to see Telecom have kept their branding to a minimum with only a link to T World on the right softkey. The W705 was really nice, although nothing special on the software front. Just the same as any A2 phone I've seen. I actually thought the C510 was better.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Took them long enough. The dummy has been sitting in the window of my local Vodafone store for a good 3-4 months...

Posted by soane28
Im really curious to see pictures taken by SE W995 (retail versions though, sick of seeing pre release samples) and a sample video too. Im considering buying this if the camera is similar to the C905 and sell the Renoir to my mate whos really interested in it. Would it be a bad decision or not you reckon? I just really enjoy my music and miss having a 3.5mm jack and good bass. The Renoir is clear in sound but lacks bass which is dissapointing...

I think it would be a good, but possibly expensive idea. The W995 looks like it really has it all for a feature phone... You'll miss out on the touch screen, but the W995 will definitely suit your music needs.

I hope he gets compensation, and that Joe Karam gets compensated too for the huge toll on his business, family and self. He should be nominated for a New Years honour IMO.

Did any of our CHCH members attend the court over the last 57 days? The public gallery is open to anyone to have a look... so long as you switch your cellphone off!

Nah, I prefer to just follow it via the news. However he did go to the movies next door to my work about a week or two back.

He won't be rich. He doesn't automatically qualify for anything, not even an apology.
He is traumatised and will be for some time.
He is penniless and may be able to make something out of interviews and books but not a great deal. I can't see there being a movie or anything like that.
He may/may not be able to take advantage of his singing voice if he still retains that skill.
He'll probably move overseas to get away from the media as did Arthur Allan Thomas for a time.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I think it's highly likely he'll receive some compensation though. This is NZ's biggest court case, I don't think the public are going to be happy unless Bain gets some money.

Posted by carkitter
To that end I wish the News Media would shut up about the expense of the whole process, because it just makes some feel that enough money has been spent already so why spend more? That's completely unfair to Bain.
If the media want to make a point about the expense, why not ask the Police and Crown Prosecutor for comment? NZ media are just parasites most of the time.

For a very good crtique of the NZ Media, see here:
http://tvnz.co.nz/media7/video
or watch Media7 on TVNZ 7 if you have Freeview.

Episode 19 has a good panel discussion on what is and isn't 'Off the record'. These vultures are so hipocritical! They use multiple takes to make themselves look good but claim that politicians are like professional sports people, they should be able to perform on cue, in an instant and get it right every time or else be taken down in public. What BS!!! Find me a professional sportsperson in NZ who is totally infallible and never made a mistake, and I'll find you a flying pig holding and autographed picture of the Loch Ness Monster and a map to Jimmy Hoffa's body! Morons.
Note: Russel Brown's comment about having to 'do some work' when investigating information leaked from politicians. Funny!! Yes Duncan, you got caught saying what you mean.

Sorry for the rant... Lazy, cynical media gets me wound up.

Posted by soane28
Yeah, the media arent exactly the most truthful information providers...

Have you seen the W995 camera samples recently?? One compared shots with the iphone and the iphone pics looked brighter, better colours! Purple fringing, a white cast across the pictures, blurry, dull looking colours...is this an 8 megapixel camera? I would of expected alot more from such a high end phone. So thats that then cross it off my list!

Posted by carkitter
I don't believe that camera comparison for a moment. My iPhone produces pics that are next to useless, my V640i photos are heaps better. I would expect W995 to be a lot better than V640i.

iPhone sample pic

V640i sample pic

V630i sample pic

V800 sample pic

You decide.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah I saw the W995/iPhone comparison too. I don't honestly believe it would be that bad... It's the same module as the C905 so it couldn't be as bad as the iPhone which carkitter has just demonstrated is next to useless.

Haha I just heard it wasn't just the C510 that was recalled on Telecom, but every single phone! Apparently a software problem. The guy who told me said he has "inside info" but I really don't know how much credibility this rumour has.

Posted by carkitter
That iPhone photo was taken on a beautiful warm day during last summer with the sun behind me so no excuses I'm afraid - the conditions were ideal. iPhone 3G photos are characterised by blurriness and are dull and lifeless. If you think it looks poor above, you should see it on the gorgeous, bright, high-quality screen of the iPhone which just magnifies the faults to the nth degree. Makes you cringe, seriously.

If however, you upload V640i photos to the iPhone's photo gallery, you'll be stunned by the results. You'll swear they were taken by a DSLR and optimised by Photoshop - the iPhone screen just makes them shine! Quite ironic really...

Posted by soane28
Im not surprised at all! Thats what apple are good at Heaps of BS Thats just my opinion though!

Either way, the colours on the W995 shot looked very bland in comparison to the iphone shot and thats not exactly something to be proud of. Just looking at samples by themselves is bad enough. Im so dissapointed!

Posted by yea g
Well the C905 can produce some stunning results, sometimes things taken by the c905 look even better than they do in real life (IMO) So its kinda suprising that the w995 can't at least match that (minus xenon of course)

Posted by carkitter
@soane28
If you think of the iPhone as a media viewing device rather than a media creation device like the phones we're used to, then it makes more sense. You know, like an iPod with a phone added...

Which I guess, kinda makes an iPhone v W995 camera comparison absurd.

What's with the sound on the XT Testdrive website? Every time I visit I have to turn my sound off cause it irritates me. I wonder who thought it was a good idea to put that in... An unnecessary waste of bandwidth.
