Im pretty sure its w995 from images I have seen... But I have been wrong on MANY occasions.

Posted by yea g
Yea i saw that! It is probably telecom because they used that exact same phone on most of their ads. I havn't visited the site yet since i only got opera mini, but maybe one of you guys could do a whois on it

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Wooo! We just hit 2000 posts guys! Another milestone!

And it's definitely the W995... You can watch it on the website. I kind of wonder how they managed to bring Richard Hammond into it though. Is it an international ad that they've gone and used for the NZ network or what?

I have no idea how to do that but I think a Geekzone member already did it with this result:
registrant_contact_name: Telecom IP Limited
registrant_contact_address1: P O Box 949
registrant_contact_city: WELLINGTON
registrant_contact_country: NZ (NEW ZEALAND)
registrant_contact_phone: +64 4 4738278
registrant_contact_fax: +64 4 4723358
registrant_contact_email: dns@ajpark.com
BBCode End -->

The PO Box goes back to a Wellington law firm
A J Park who specialize in branding and intellectual property (IP).

It was probably when TopGear came to NZ and they booked Little Richard in advanced. Only Telecom could pull that off - new starter networks wouldnt have resources or funds for stars like him!

Lookin forward to hearing more about what they have to offer. Maybe they will take more stance on getting the very latest handsets? Someone needs to thats for sure. Maybe we will start to see heavy mobile subsidies again? When Telecom did that, they were honestly killing it. When they switched off the subsidies, all they had was $10 txt and a youth market to prey on. -Mind you, they have always had the mentality that the Youth today are the Business owners tomorrow... but number porting quashed this idea I reckon! haha

"Gourdie would not be drawn on the range of devices available on the new network other than to say Telecom "will have a stunning line-up of devices, some of them not seen in New Zealand, some of them world firsts".

"We'll be launching when the manufacturer launches. I think about half of them are exclusive to Telecom," he said.

Anyone with an Apple iPhone connected to Vodafone's network will be able to take it across to Telecom's network.

In addition to the iPhone, other 3G capable phones - including the Blackberry - connected to Vodafone will work on the new network as long as it is capable of connecting to a 850MHz network."

So does that mean we'll finally see phones in NZ at the same time as elsewhere and not delayed by 6-9 months? I hope so.

The iPhone and Blackberry are both US spec handsets and so are UMTS850 and 2100 capable though the BB does come in CDMA versions too. I wonder if Vodafone Group will insist on a UMTS900MHz version next time round seeing as this frequency has been given the go ahead for widespread adoption across Europe?

The world firsts, what will they be - Android and Symbian Foundation phones perhaps? I'm looking forward to getting a prepay SIM to do speedtests with.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Well looking at that ad, one will probably be the W995 which I look forward to seeing and am tempted to get for myself. That's really great news though, thanks carkitter. Sounds like we will be spoilt for choice in the future, rather than stuck on what to get as it has been in the past.

Anyone good at editing video? Here's a script for a spoof XT commercial.

Begins:
Hampsters voice over: "I've driven cars,..."
Cue footage of Hampster crashing jet car last year, standing next to a broken yellow Ferrari from the budget supercar episode of Top Gear.

"I've driven boats,..."
Cue amphibious car sinking and Hampster nearly drowning, from episode of Top Gear.

"I've raced planes,..."
Cue Hampster and James May trying to race a Bugatti Veyron in a Cessna during a Top Gear challenge

"But I'm really looking forward to testing this..."
Cue close up shot of the letters XT, camera pans back to reveal an old Subaru XT coupe with the starter motor whirring but it doesn't start.
Cue clip of TeamVodafone Falcon winning Bathurst and receiving trophy.
Cue Hampster standing on racetrack straight, looking into the distance... turns, holds up the W995 and says (dubbed)...

"Hi, is that the AA?"
Ends.

That could be arranged... just give me the episode numbers that those are in and we need someone to dub the voice

oli - ive put up a couple of test shots from the LG Renoir in daylight and also using the flash as requested

If i knew how to do all that editing stuff id do it! Sounds good.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Nice! Those are some really impressive shots there. Really good daylight and some decent flash pictures too. I know my C902's flash quite often is too strong for close-up shooting so it's looking good for the LG.

Alright everyone, I have finally updated Esato Earth in the first post.
I'm having trouble uploading pictures so Westport photos are coming soon at this stage. It would be a great help if you guys could give it a quick check to see if I've made any mistakes. Also, if there's photos that someone gave me that I missed, please remind me!

Also, keep hitting me with more photos. It would be awesome to get more up there! And hopefully I won't take so long this time!

Just looking at doing a bit of a refresh on the New Zealander list. What do you guys think about removing:

humphreybc (last post Nov 2007)
Chrispy (last post Mar 2008)
Gigs (last post Jan 2008)

From the list? It doesn't look like they'll be back.

Posted by yea g
Maybe make un-active members another color, or use the <strike>

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah that might be a good idea. Just in case they do return. Thanks yea g.

Posted by yea g
you should probably use <strike> because esato doesn't let you colour links

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Sweet. All done. If there's anything more you'd like to see on/off the first post, let me know.

Posted by yea g
Maybe put (inactive) or something next to their names.

Great news people! Telecom reveals May 13 launch for new 3G network

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/con[....]c_id=1501833&objectid=10568837

And even better: Telecom also said today that a new handset from Sony Ericsson, the W995 with 8.1 mega pixel camera, Walkman music player and Outlook email support, would be available to Telecom customers before any others in the world from July.

Posted by yea g
Oh wow, that can only mean we will get the idou and others around the release date aswell (unlike vodafone)

Wait a minute....
July?!?!?!?!
W995 launches on play.com in england the 29th of may

Also I got an email from them today:

Thanks for registering at testdrive.co.nz.

Just click here before 27 April 2009 to complete your registration.

We'll be in touch again soon via email.

Kind regards
The Team at Telecom

Hey, does anyone know where I can get a genuine SonyEricsson BST-40 battery from a phyical store?

Tried DSE, Noel Lemming, Bond&Bond, Vodafone, Digital Mobile, Sony Store, and no one sells batteries.

Prefer to get one from a store instead of Trademe.

Thanks

Posted by carkitter
Hi arch6, welcome to the New Zealnders thread although I see you're not only an older member than any of us but one of the oldest on the forum at present.

Have you tried contacting Sony Ericsson NZdirect? It's hard finding genuine accessories anywhere as you know but SE seem to think otherwise from comments I've seen in MyMobile magazine so time to put them to the test I think.

Hopefully SE accessories will be come more readily available now that Telecom are recognising SE in a big way.

Posted by arch6
Hi carkitter,

Funny, didnt even noticed I've been here for so long.
I've had up to now 7 phones: 2 Ericsson, 1 Sony, 4 SonyEricsson and this has always been a great place to find info for them.
Only just noticed the NZ thread, thus the post.

I've emailed them the other night, when I started this search, but I'll give them a call at some point and ask them.

It is rather strange how no-one sells batteries, not just SE one.
Most placed I've asked replied with "We don't sell batteries".
So do they just expect you to buy another phone?

Posted by Evilchap
@arch6 if all else fails the best way to buy a genuine battery is to ring Mobile Fone Rescue on 0800 021 222. They are an Se service centre but will be happy to sort you out with a battery as well. Nice folk there.

Posted by arch6
Thanks Evilchap, never heard of them before but I'll give them a call.

W715 on the Online store for $799 - but out of stock! Here

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
And not just that Mr. Kitter, the C510 has hit the store at $549. Though it too is out of stock!

Also, I saw a T700 today at the mall. I have to say it looks nice, but it's certainly not impressive to look at like the original T610i was.

hmm... looks like vodafone is speeding up releases, perhaps to compete with telecom?

Posted by carkitter
Or trying to give the impression of speeding up releases.
I think the Out of Stock label is misleading, it should read Coming Soon if anything.

Posted by yea g
maybe...

Oh and anyone know how much telecom will charge for their prepay sim cards?

Posted by yea g
This thread is really quiet atm, which is suprising considering telecom is almost going live, and nzcomms is due to announce a whole lot of stufff. Oh well. Anyway, i just realised why my phone doesn't detect telecoms new network, because its only 2100 UMTS/HSDPA. Damn it! I was looking forward to putting them to the test

Posted by carkitter
You need a C905a

...or an iPhone

...or perhaps a shiny new W995 from Telecom. It'll still have 2100MHz in it for connecting to Vodafone.

Posted by soane28
sh*t! Just checked the retail box of my LG Renoir and it says UTMS 900/2100 only. I obviously got the asia/pacific version. So i wont be going on telecom either!

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I thought my C902 would be sweet on both networks but now I'm not sure. I just checked and it doesn't look like it.

And man, the Sony Ericsson website is terrible. Errors all over the place and one of the slowest websites I've ever used in recent memory!

Posted by JiSm
^Ditto. Been savin my C902 for Telecom. Lickily X1 will work too! Guess I will see what I like better and which has the better txtn and data deals. Vodas is really good atm.. Considering im Prepay anyways.

Posted by carkitter
Latest info on NZ Comms here. August network launch date, Branding launched May 11.

Funny that they see petrol stations as retail channels - I though you weren't allowed to use a mobile phone at a petrol station for fear of an explosion.
Not that there has ever been any recorded incident of this type of problem.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah apparently the say no mobile phones on the forecourt because of the risk of explosion if your cell phone was to spark! When have you ever seen a mobile phone cause a spark (when it's not in the microwave)?!

Posted by yea g
Bullsh*t according to mythbusters

Posted by Evilchap
I agree, you could go swimming in petrol while on a call on your mobile and you wouldnt cause fire.

Posted by yea g
Depneds on the conductivity of petrol.... probably you would be ok so long as you didn't drop the phone

Guess where I was this morning... go on...

If health and safety was a real concern, people would not be allowed to put petrol into cars at all given that the most common cause of forecourt explosion is static discharge from getting out of your car and then touching the fuel filler door!

@frankthetank - lol thats funny.

@carkitter - Im really keen to hear the results of that outcome

Posted by carkitter
Don't worry it'll be all over the news tomorrow.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I just received a call from Black+White... Did anyone else get a call? Basically they were calling to ask me what I was currently spending on Vodafone to see whether they could offer me anything better.

They couldn't. And to be honest, the 'wholesaling Vodafone's network' thing doesn't sound like it's going to pay off for them. Their plans that the guy mentioned to me went along the lines of $30 for 30 minutes of calling and your choice of TXT2000 (VF to VF) or 600 texts per month to any mobile. Sounds exactly the same as the plan I was on a few years ago, which by the way was crap.

The only chance they have of sticking around for a bit is if the whole 'on a plan but not on a contract' thing takes off. But really, does anyone care that much?

Posted by carkitter
I think they should try a business model closer to the UK with free phones and 12/18 month terms. Their current low price plans aren't good value.

anyone keeping track of the napier man whos gunning police down? Ex military man is holding up against the police for two days running! All due to a drug bust gone terribly wrong.

Posted by carkitter
Not really. TV1/TV3's slant on this type of stuff doesn't interest me. Radio New Zealand National does a better job of covering delicate situations like this.
