Nah, from Noel Leeming but they have to get one couriered up from Dunedin as they are out of stock.

Pretty pleased too, I got $300 off retail and it has built in FreeView HD, plus it's 1080p.

Nice one M-O!

Does it have DLNA?
I'm holding out til DNLA is available for a reasonable price of until our current 29" CRT blows up...

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Nah no DLNA as far as I know, but my PS3 has it anyway. My main reason for buying the TV is to have high definition graphics for gaming.

This is the Sony product page for the 40" version of what I got. But I got the 32" because 40" is too massive for my room!

Single Tuner PC Picture in Picture that allows you to enjoy TV in the corner of the screen while using your BRAVIA LCD TV as a computer monitor for the main screen.

Nice. Esato and Lost in widescreen HD at the same time...

You will remember to leave your room occasionally, you know, to eat and stuff.
Edit: Using SE Bluetooth PC Remote or a Wifi Remote control App on the iPhone would work really well with this.

I was thinking of getting a bravia to use as a computer monitor, but I think instead I will get a laptop (most likely a vaio AW, but I'll see what dell can do)

Awesome, I gotta find myself a cable to use for that! And I should probably buy a mouse...

Of course! The TV is just for my spare time. I have to go to work and get fresh air and so on...

Can't wait til it arrives though.

Posted by yea g
Your laptop uses vga right? cause you could just use an old vga cable from your pc to your monitor. Infact I have a spare one left over from when I upgraded to DVI

Posted by carkitter
I see that your TV has a USB port on it too so I guess you'll be plugging in the C902 for some multimedia fun.

@yea g
Your C905 will get along REALLY well with a Vaio AW. My Vaio and my V640i (now my son's V640i) are best friends!

Nah my MacBook has a Mini DVI port. Looks like it's one of those stupid Apple only things that mean you have to buy an expensive accessory.

Posted by yea g
Oh damn, looks like you need an apple to dvi adapter and a dvi to hdmi adapter
And the adapter costs $40 and add in the $20 for the dvi to HDMI and than it starts to get expensive

Pass...

Why does everything have to be proprietary with Apple? It would be so much easier if all I needed was one cable that was freely available.

Posted by carkitter
"A Mini-DVI to HDMI Adapter is also available but not from Apple."

Probably the best idea is to get one of these and then use a standard HDMI cable. Still not cheap but then nothing involving HD has ever been cheap.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Actually I got an HDMI cable for $35 at EB games today. I didn't think that was overly expensive considering the prices Sony sells them for!
But thanks, that's definitely an option!

Also, my TV arrived this morning from Dunedin. I thought that was amazing considering I bought the TV late in the day yesterday! Unfortunately though, I didn't have time to set it up. I'm looking forward to doing that after I finish work at midnight!

Posted by soane28
wahoo thats pretty awsome oli!

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Cheers soane28. It's been great not having a fuzzy VGA resolution TV for once! And Freeview is awesome!

@yea g: You were right when you said i haven't played PS3 until I've played it in HD. It's so much better!

Posted by yea g
Everything is better in HD.

Edit: Vodafones new data plan is out http://www.vodafone.co.nz/mobile-data/mobile-web.jsp?

Broadband Lite

If you use more than 10MB of data in a session, or want the freedom to use more data when you need to, then our Broadband Lite plan is right for you.

This gives you 100MB to use in a month, and extra data is charged at just 10c per MB.

Please phone 777 if you would like to add a 100MB data plan to your mobile account.

So guys i have finally taken a step and i have ordered the LG Renoir from Expert Infotech at $754 (great price huh?). Hopefully i get it friday or early next week. Will have a good play with it and tell you my thoughts. First time ive owned a touchscreen so i guess ill either love it or hate it

Now i might need that lite data plan since i will have a large screen to browse around on!

Posted by yea g
Damn it, I was just about to get the broadband lite thing, but I just got a sms saying my txt2000 has recurred, and now I have no credit

An Indian girl brought a 5800 Xpressmusic into my work yesterday. I have to say that they look horribly plain, and nothing special at all. It reminded me a lot of an N95 8GB which a girl at work has, and I think is one of the ugliest phones ever. The big screen looked like it would be nice but what I saw of the interface looked dull and unexciting.

Posted by masseur
@Muhammad-Oli, first impressions are something but I'm surprised you've dismissed it so quickly without actually spending time

I think the plain look comes down to the lack of need of too many buttons because the interface works well, but perhaps thats against the normal guy prinicipal of the more buttons and controls... the better!

I got the 5800 for my son a couple of weeks ago and was so impressed I got one for myself and now it serves as my 2nd phone

I'll be the first to admit that it'll never replace the iphone but its definitely worthy of consideration IMHO

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
@Masseur: Nice to see you here.

You're right, I did only see the phone for a few seconds and what I saw may not have been the best example of what the phone offers. I will have to try one properly before making a solid opinion.

But I think at this stage that what I don't like about its appearance is the funny rounded lip that acts as a bezel and makes the screen and the three buttons appear recessed slightly. That and the rounded appearance don't particularly appeal to me. I was surprised about its size though, probably more in a good way. It still seems quite pocketable despite looking fat in images.

Posted by carkitter
@Masseur
I noticed the 5800 as a 2nd phone in the 2nd phone thread the other day. Glad to see you still have the W890.

I had a few seconds play on a 5800 at Uni a couple of weeks ago and I felt the implementation of the TS UI was very good but I just don't like Nokia's menu structure and font style. I also found it too thick for my liking and it had a cheap plasticky feel not at all comparable to the iPhone. Overall I liked it but wouldn't swap my iPhone for it.

The big question is would I spend $800 on a W715 or on a 5800? Touchscreen or fantastic SE UI it comes down to for me. Whadya think...?

$800 NZ dollars? thats about £316. I paid £180 for each of the two 5800's I have bought and even at high street prices its only about £249-£299 in UK

so what I think is that you have it tough there! but I guess its the same in oz too

Rofl @ people who actually buy phones from vodafone. Seriously though, how can you charge more than 200% of the manafacturers RRP of a phone??!!???

BTW the 5800 is $680 $660 at Einfo

Black+White's pricing seems pretty decent. They have the C902 significantly cheaper than Vodafone do, but still not as cheap as I got it.

God, where the hell is NZ comms? I get 100% reception with them (test it by putting network select on manual mode and put a telecom global roaming sim in your phone, it gives you an option of vodafone or nz comms) and very intermittent coverage with vodafone. But really, their network is on, how much power are they wasting with that?

More Prepay data:

Surf’s up with Vodafone's Prepay Broadband Surfer

Prepay customers have been clamouring for more data on their mobiles and now you can get up to half a gigabyte for $40 with Vodafone’s Broadband Surfer plan.

Only available to Supa Prepay customers, Vodafone Broadband Surfer allows customers to surf the net, watch movie clips and join in the social media fun for only $40 a month. And if you exceed your 512MB of data, simply buy another 512MB block for $40 and carry on surfing.

Broadband Surfer is great for small businesses that might need data on an occasional basis, or for bach owners who don’t want to miss out on the internet while they’re enjoying the waves.

Vodafone’s GM of Products and Pricing Paul Toomey says anyone can use their mobiles as a modem with this plan, or simply buy a new SIM dedicated to data.

“If you’ve got a Vodem Stick or a Vodafone Connect Card but don’t need ongoing monthly data, then Broadband Surfer lets you use what you need, when you need it. We’ll let you know when you’re at 90% usage and again at 100% with a TXT, freeing you up to concentrate on what’s important to you.”

Best of all, Vodafone Prepay customers can put together their own package of broadband options from the full range, including $1/day, $10/100MB and now $40/512MB.

“So if you’re on the 100MB Lite plan but realise you need a whole lot more, you can add 512MB Surfer for the rest of the month. Or if you’ve used up your 512MB but only need a bit to get through to the end of the month, you can opt for the $1/day casual rate. The choice is entirely yours,” says Toomey.

Existing Supa Prepay users can add Broadband Surfer to their phones by sending 'BUYTopUp512MB" to 756. New customers will need to go in store to buy a new SIM and have it activated for prepay data.

Vodafone Broadband Surfer is available from April 15 and costs $40 for 512MB of data.

$40 for 512mb???? that'll get you 3gb on telecom (wired) or almost 6gb on xnet (wired). Why should wireless data be sooo expensive in NZ?

Perhaps, though you'll need a really long cable to make Telecom's fixed broadband truly portable.
Previously, $29.95 bought 200MB so it is an improvement.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Are those prices better than what you have been getting on your plan carkitter?

Posted by carkitter
I'm on a 3GB plan for $69.95 per month. An extra 3GB is $10 more.
The deal over Xmas gave us 1/2 price payments for 6 months so currently I pay $34.95 per month.

Posted by Evilchap
man thats madness, dont know how they justify those charges.

Posted by soane28
sh*t! Thats alot of cash to be handing over for barely any usage.

So what do you do when you want to use internet on the move?

I'm not a gamer so I'll willingly sacrifice low ping and mega bandwidth for flexibility.

Obviously we don't have the same kind of needs as you carkitter - I never really need to use internet on the move and on the occasion that I do, I don't mind paying the $1 or so that Vodafone might charge me. But even for mobile internet, those prices do seem a little steep carkitter. They really are taking advantage of being the only real player in the market.

Posted by soane28
This is true, i never use internet on the go, so it sounds like alot to me. Wonder what the UK prices are at?

Posted by carkitter
1GB for 15 pounds ($39) I think.

BTW, anyone know how to get a pound symbol on a US spec keyboard? I'm sure there is a way...

Edit:
3GB for 15 pounds when you sign up to an account.
5GB for 25 pounds ($65) and 15 pounds per gig after that, so 6GB is 40 pounds ($104) from Voda UK or $79.95 here.

Accounts have 12/18/24 month options (24 month only in NZ). 12 month plans require 28 pounds for the Vodem stick which is unnecessary if you use your phone as modem.

Congrats mate! A few years ago I would have said what yea g said but the Renoir is definitely an awesome phone. I hope to see some 8mp shots from it!

By the way I saw my first C905 the other night at work. It was black and it took me a while to recognise it because it looked a lot smaller than I expected! It did look very nice though. You got yours away being fixed yet yea g?

Posted by soane28
Honestly, its a really good phone! I cant believe the general opinion of it is bad. Why?

Im going to write a review and hopefully people will change their minds after reading a review from a person who has actually used it!

oli - yeah? I will always wonder what C905 would be like in the flesh. I did see one in the supermarket (in palmy of all places!) and it was the bronze version. Looked good from what i saw but hard to see.

Did anyone see the ad tonight for XT Mobile? Probably old news but yea, this is their site so far...

testdrive.co.nz

Sony Ericsson in the add too! W995i - NICE

Posted by soane28
Yeah i did! Interesting. So another network in NZ? This is great!

Posted by carkitter
That'll be NZ Communications I bet!

Edit: Speculation on Geekzone is that it is Telecom's new network which is being brought forward to a May launch date. That's odd because I've already registered on the Telecom website for info about the new network and now I'm being asked to do so over again on the testdrive site.

Is XT supposed to hint at Xtra? Perhaps. I'm still looking forward to NZC more than Telecom.

SE are supposed to be releasing W595, W705 and W715 in NZ in June, perhaps C905 too?
