Hmm... that's odd, I would have thought all services would work over all technologies 2G thru to 3.5G. Perhaps Vodafone default to a mixture of frequencies for some services, but that would be dependant on the area and it's coverage ideosyncracies I would expect.

Anyway, Telecom will offer txt and calling over 3G/3.5G as well as data and advanced services like MMS, etc.

Posted by yea g
Well I do know you can text on 3g with no gsm (on vodafone) but calling seems to need gsm

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I've had several texts fail to send when I have no GSM coverage. But I guess it must be operator dependent.

Posted by yea g
Yea.

So anyone heard anything from nz comms lately?

Posted by carkitter
No, but they have deployed a huge number of cellsites around Auckland so they must be up to something. Rumour has it they intend to launch about the same time as T-day, but they won't be using the name NZ Communications in their marketing.

Due to a lower capacity per cellsite (Telecom are using the 850MHz band - much lower than high capacity 2100MHz) there will either need to be more sites (high capital expenditure causing delays in rollout) or low capacity (overloading leading to upset customers). 850MHz should deliver good reception though...

I'd better revise this, I've just found out Telecom is using some 2100MHz in urban areas for capacity. Probably just the main centres though.

W705 now available at Expert Infotech:

Posted by yea g
maybe they'll get the w715 soon...

Posted by carkitter
They also have the W980 for only $499 ...tempting indeed!

Posted by soane28
Carkitter - I saw that! Was tempted myself!

Posted by yea g
Its a shame not many people have heard of them. They need a better ad campaign. The only way I found out about them was on price spy...

Telstra Australia's 21Mbps 3G network goes live to general customers next month. Business customers have had access since Feb, including high speed hardware no-one else seems to know anything about. By Xmas it be 42Mbps.

Check out the latest Australian PC Authority magazine for details.
(Obviously it was a must have for me when I saw it on the magazine stand at the supermarket the other day... )

About Sept last year, VodafoneNZ did a demo of 4th Generation LTE technology. They got a speed of 155Mbps! LTE is expected Q4 2010 or Q1 2011 last time I heard.

BTW, LTE will be symmetrical so download and upload will be the same speed.

Just thought I'd say the T707 looks like it's coming to NZ at some stage.

Also, the other day I was driving along in Chch and on one street I counted 5 lampposts in a row with cellsites built into them... 5! I wonder what that's all about.

Posted by yea g
Yea, I noticed those. I think there either telecom or nz comms. In westgate, there are these tall poles that serve no purpose whatsoever, and I noticed on thursday that they put a cell phone tower on one. Maybe they do serve a purpose afterall...

00 Telecom would be the now-defunct 025 network.

What interests me is the TelstraClear UMTS2100 network; is that a new network to come?

By the looks of it, they don't have VNOs on that list so I guess its their new network

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Oh maaaaan. Kings of Leon went OFF. One of the best nights ever! Pics maybe later if they're any good. Wow.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Well the pictures turned out crappy but the videos are great! The C902 really is awesome at video. Stereo recording sounds awesome!

BTW: Anyone seen a W980 around? The VF online store says they're out of stock but I'm yet to see one anywhere other than the dummies in store.

Posted by yea g
Gotta love the sound quality of the video in the c series

oli - my best mate rang me up in the middle of it but i couldnt hear much. He said exactly the same. Im gutted was going to go down to christchurch for it

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
That's too bad mate, it really was such a great gig. I wouldn't have missed it for anything. I even bought Wellington tickets and flights when the Christchurch ones sold out. Then later more Christchurch tickets became available so I sold the Wellington ones for enough money to also cover losing my airfares and got me some Christchurch tickets. So worth it even after all that! Hate to rub it in though...

Posted by soane28
haha its alright, i cant really complain, especially when im going to fiji in late june! Hope to have the Renoir or C905 by then to get some great shots

Posted by yea g
Posted any vids of it on youtube yet oli?
[ This Message was edited by: yea g on 2009-03-31 09:14 ]

@soane28: Isn't Fiji a bit of a dodgey destination still? Either way I bet it would make a sweet trip.

@yea g: Nah not yet. Might later, but I dunno if they're that worth it. They aren't long or anything.

Posted by soane28
oli - im not bothered - i was considering thailand after all the coup stuff. All i thought was cheap tickets over, sweet as! If there is any dodgy stuff going on it will make the trip more exciting and might end up in fiji for abit longer!

If not youtube id like to see what it was like anyway. Maby you could upload one or two for me and yea g?

Posted by yea g
Just stick them all together in windows movie maker or iMovie (iMovie is better)

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Will do guys. As soon as I get a day off working to do that kind of thing. Not sure at the moment when that will be, but hopefully soon.

Posted by yea g
God, my phone just brokded today the d-pad and right softkey stop working if the slide is open. And here I was thinking I had got a problem free c905

This is driving me insane, and it has only been like that since 5th period. Damn phone

Lol writing this post seems to have made it want to work again, but I think that it will stop again soon.

My girlfriend's K770i's number 2 button stopped working for a while after she dropped it. Had us shitting ourselves for a second but it got to working again shortly afterwards thankfully.

@yea g
Sorry to hear that, I hope EI sending it overseas for warranty service won't take too long.

A couple of new offers from Vodafone:

Prepay Data is coming. $10 for 100MB, exceed that and it's 10c p/MB which equals $10 for another 100MB. Available as an add-on to Supa prepay and On Account. Great for You-Choose or Prepay iPhone owners.

Get a Dell Inspiron Netbook bundled with Mobile Data. 1GB 24 month package deal $74.95 per month and 3GB package deal for $90 per month.

Both are really good deals IMO.

Those are awesome deals! Dunno how long I'll stay on prepay but while I'm on it I'll definitely take advantage of that!

And it's good to see Vodafone following the big overseas networks with the bundling of netbooks in with data deals. It's looking good for the future, it is.

Posted by yea g
Wow awesome deal! its the same price as they have now, but you get more. Thats an awesome idea

@ oli : wheres those esato earth nz links gone eh?

Posted by carkitter
@K71
How about submitting some photos of Wellington/Kapiti/Wairarapa?
Lovely areas down there. Paikakariki Hill sticks in the memory...

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
@K71 and everyone: I'm real sorry about the lack of updates to Esato Earth. It is quite time consuming but I know that's no real excuse. All I can say is that I'll hopefully have an update on it soon. Sorry! It's coming!

Posted by soane28
yea g - oh no dont tell me that! I was about 80 percent going to get the C905 over the LG Renoir. I thought id finally made a decision but apparently not! I really dont want to be sending it back soon after ive got it.

Posted by yea g
I think the new C905's are better but then here I was thinking I had a fault free one until it broke

Posted by carkitter

Vodafone have new 3G coverage maps available here.
3G Broadband Urban is 2100Mhz HSDPA
3G Broadband Extended is 900Mhz HSDPA

Posted by yea g
Lol I'm on the edge of extended and urban coverage, but I can get the 2100 a bit. Most of the time, its just 2g

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I'm quite happy, I have a little H symbol at the top of my screen wherever I go. Even at my house where I used to get a really bad 3G signal!

Only for non-Vodafone customers, dunno if that includes Vodafone Prepay customers switching to On Account.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
That's a bit crap for Vodafone's loyal customers then. I hate how companies reward new people and neglect the people that have been with them for a long time.

Posted by yea g
ooooooooooh if I stand on the roof I get an HSDPA signal

Posted by carkitter
There's 2100MHz HSDPA in Riverhead and 900MHz HSDPA in Helensville if that helps? I think there's a transmitter in Kumeu also.

This deal is known as Mobile Broadband Lite and is available to On Account customers since Monday, and will become available to Prepay customers on the 15th. Expect some teething problems with setup until the CSR's get up to speed.

Posted by yea g
AFAIK that transmitter is for nz comms, but it might be vodafone.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Heh heh. I just bought me one of these:

I hope it arrives before Easter!
