We just got a fancy new ADSL 2+ wireless router. It seems quicker but I'm not sure yet...

Posted by yea g
Wahhhhhh we have to wait till 2012

Posted by JiSm
We have ADSL2 where I live and I brought my router back from uk. No real spped difference that is noticable... mind you in saying that, due to the insanely low data caps here I havent downloaded any massive files yet. Biggest so far was a firmware for ipod touch through Itunes @ 252mb which took 4 mins... Not too bad for NZ is it not?

Posted by yea g
My school has super fast broadband, I downloaded 500mb of warez in like 2 minutes (I also got my account banned lol)

Coming to NZ from latest announcements:

C510, C903, W508.

Not coming to NZ:

C901, W395, W715.

Had a look at the nokia 5800 xpress music dummy the other day and i love it. Waiting for the vodafone store to get a real one in so i can see what its truly like though.

Nothing of real interest on SE's front, they arent exactly trying to compete at the moment with the release of similar handsets from last year. Quite sad really as they were doing really well at first.

Hows everyone doing with their phones at the moment? Content or looking for upgrades?

So who tells you this stuff???

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
@soane28: Yeah SE in NZ isn't doing to great, but then SE across the world isn't either. All I hope for is that the C905 and X1 show up soon, not that I'll be upgrading. I must say the W595 looks really good in reality though.

But no, I'm definitely very happy with my C902. I'll keep this longer than I kept my W910i I reckon.

@yea g: SE tells me. Haha, no but seriously, go to any product page for an SE phone like this one:

http://www.sonyericsson.com/c[....]eportfolio/specification/c903# (change the phone name in the link to see another)

Then on the left hand side of the page it has "Local Availability". Click "Show".

Posted by yea g
Oh. Very simple I could have worked that out (eventually...)

@soane28

The iPhone 3G 8GB I have is going to be a hard act to follow. I was thinking that a G705/W705/W715 would replace it easily but now I'm not so sure. I really want to see what sort of competition WM, Android and Palm can provide to the Apps on the App Shop before I make a change. Plus, in another 6 months there will probably be another iPhone along...

Did you guys know that Auckland had it's hottest day on record today?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
@carkitter: I was expecting a much higher temperature than that! Its funny because we have several days every summer that go over that temperature, and we're further south!

Anyways, I'm off looking for a new job and I had my first job interview today for Powerstore. They had a lot of applicants so I don't know what my chances are like for that position, but I'll keep you all posted. I'm hoping for something like Powerstore so that I can get me some cheap gadgets!

Yeah it was less than I expected too.

Good luck with your interviews.

Posted by soane28
oli - good luck! I know how hard it is to get a job at the moment, only just managed to find work a few weeks ago and i had been trying since november!

32 degrees? interesting likewise i would of expected higher.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Thanks guys. I'm hoping to hear back from them for follow-up interviews early next week!

@soane28: What line of work are you in? If you don't mind me asking.

Posted by soane28
oli - ha not at all. Im setting up the halls at massey uni for the students. I got one more year at massey myself so its been a real good job for me. Its funny cos i was being a grounds keeper for UCOL a few weeks ago! Seems to be alot of short term jobs around and not enough long term...

Still waiting for vodafones call back to tell me they have the nokia 5800 in. Im quite set on this one

Have you looked at the Samsung Omnia too?
Both of those interest me as iPhone competitors but without the limitations.
Unfortunately, they're without the iPhones best feature - the App Store but Nokia may be fixing that very soon. Their own App Store is about to arrive.

Too right. Quite annoying actually!

Does anyone else find it weird that apparently we're not getting the W715 (the Vodafone version of the W705), yet we are supposedly getting the W705 here?

Anyone else thinking this could be a Telecom/Black+White release?

Posted by yea g
Or even a NZ comms release

Posted by carkitter
It'll have to be the W705a for Telecom. I can't understand Vodafone not having the W715, it seems really strange but then somewhwere between Vodafone's restrictive policies and SENZ's complete lack of any common sense or intestinal fortitude lies the rediculous situation we have listed in the first post.

Unfortunately, importers really are the first port of call for fans in NZ.

Have you seen the W995! C905 has a sister! The Uni internet connection is too slow to check out the Strangely named Idou yet though.

Yep, and the W995 is on its way to New Zealand eventually. Good to see a 3.5mm jack on a fully loaded SE feature phone!

Idou is one incredible piece of machinery, but bear in mind that it is not properly announced yet. SE have 'previewed' it, but its announcement is not due until Q2 and its release is not due until the second half of 09. The final product could (and likely will) be quite different. At the moment the product they are showing people is very incomplete.

Awesome announcement though! It meant quite a bit of work for me though so I'm somewhat glad they didn't show more than two phones!

Posted by yea g
I swear, stupid telecom's broadband usage meter is wrong. Apparently I've used 10gb already! How could I use 10gb in a month if my hard drive was full and all the other computers in the house are used for trademe! Stupid 10kbps download speed ((((((((((((((((

Posted by soane28
SE have done well to preview the Idou. Its exactly what they need to keep up with the play. Very high specs! Just hope they keep on target with their release of it though. Either way looks like a very speedy interface.

yea g - you wouldnt have a virus or anything like that sucking ur net mayby? sounds suspicious!

Carkitter - I really dont get on with samsung unless its symbian UI. The newly released touchscreen with HD video recording has the same UI as the nokia 5800 xpress music so might be a consideration down the track. At the moment, nokia 5800 will be best option - cheaper and already available.

Looks like I spoke too soon. As of yesterday, there is only ONE phone in my sights - the Idou. It's the first phone I've seen to match the iPhone in touch screen UI and potentially the S60 Apps supported by the might of Nokia may be able to gain traction too. I really want this phone...

+3! Very very nice interface and real quick. Plus you cant go wrong with 12 megapixel cam AND xenon flash, LED flash. Brilliant. If you look at the latest monsters from samsung, nokia they all have LED flashes which isnt ideal for such a high spec camera phone. And LG, well they do try with xenon but they end up less powerful than LED flashes!

Posted by yea g
I just hope they price it right

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Oh it won't be...

Posted by soane28
yeah it wont be cheap thats for sure...

Posted by carkitter
No,but it will be a must have.
This will be my first $1000+ mobile phone and worth every penny.

Posted by yea g
Wow, sony ericsson will be very popular when they release this. By the looks of it, all of us are getting idou

Posted by soane28
Yeah ill definitely get this phone...when its released however is the question.

Finally got to test the nokia 5800 xpressmusic today. I am really impressed. The touchscreen was more responsive than i thought, although sometimes you would have to press to get things going instead of touch. This could be cos the screen protector was still on and the phone had never been turned on so i was trying to play with it wile it was loading up.
Text input is much much better than the iphone IMO. With the nokia 5800 i could text like normal but when i tryed the iphone i got frustrated and gave up.
Music on this thing is really impressive. The stereo speakers actually sound bassy, less tinny and of decent quality. When i plugged my headphones in, the sound was extremly similar to my standalone sony mp3 player. Sony wins with much more stable bass though. Not saying the 5800 doesnt do bass well...cos it certainly does.
Camera worked all ok, its much easier now to operate and more user friendly than the normal N series camera interface. Pretty quick to take and save a picture, although so it should be as its only 3.2 megapixels.
Dont understand what some people are saying about the auto rotation being slow? I thought it was pretty quick and much faster than the nokia n82 ever did.
Image gallery is nice, the usual expectation of a touchscreen phone. I have to say things were alot quicker and easier with touchscreen (remember i have never owned or experienced one before).

So i thinking this can be my filler until Idou...

Posted by yea g
Lol I've already made arrangements to sell my C905 to my friend when idou comes out

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Funny... The W910i seems to have gone up in price according to the Vodafone online store.

Posted by yea g
Knowing vodafone, thats probably 100% true

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Definitely. I'm still waiting for the W595 to show up in the store.

Posted by carkitter
Hey, I just noticed I'm comng up on 2000 posts!

Posted by yea g
I just passed 1000 not too long ago, although I don't check often.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Congratulations guys!

Posted by yea g
Lol.

Did you hear the boy racers in the weekend?

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Well I worked on Friday night until midnight so I witnessed some of it while driving my way home. My work is on one of the main boy racer avenues and as I left traffic was backed up quite a bit with what looked like a single cop pulling everyone over. And there were cops everywhere. Seemed like there was one with its lights flashing down every single street. But I didn't see anything particularly bad actually happening besides a bit of speeding.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
A year from its release, the W910i has been removed from the online store. It did better than the K850i which released at the same time! I'm thinking the W595 will show up as its replacement soon.

Going through albany on the bus today, and got a random popup message saying "select network?" and it had ok and cancel, so I click ok and it had this:

(I kept it open till I got home just for you guys )

Posted by soane28
Interesting! Just looked it up and here it is:

http://www.nzcomms.co.nz/

An interesting read.

Posted by yea g
hehe we do know about that already, I was just pointing out that their network was online and working in albany

Posted by yea g
Just got that message again, seems we have NZ comms service where I live

Posted by soane28
oh sorry! Im obviously out of the loop with this one. Is telstraclear still going forward with thier own GSM network or is it just rumours at the moment? That will make 4 networks if all goes to plan.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Its all going ahead as far as I know. Add in Black+White too.

@yea g: Can you click on nzcomms? What happens?

Posted by yea g
Well at first it just said no coverage then went to vodafone, but then it came up again so I went into the lounge (more open space and usually has better coverage) and clicked on nz comms. I got the please wait message for a while then "forbidden network" and it went back to vodafone. Interesting....

Edit: just trying out the new MyPhoneExplorer and it came up again, so I got a few screenshots:

Edit2: They use EDGE network (little E in the corner when connected to them)

[ This Message was edited by: yea g on 2009-02-25 07:41 ]

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Interesting... But I don't think its Edge, I think its an E for 'Emergency Calls Only'. I've had that come up on my phone a few times.
