Nice!
Vodafone's red network doesn't quite reach my suburb and I'm miles away from a telephone exchange anyway.

Upload speed hasn't improved much! here my speed test on normal adsl:

Mine is ADSL2 as well but we've had no Telecom rep come round. Did they just give you a new router?

We have a wireless router so I guess they won't give us a free one of those...

So are we going to have an esato new zealanders meet up or what??

Posted by frankthetank
Yeah they are working their way around the suburbs as they get it from what the guy was saying, we just had to sign up for a further 24 month contract which is not a problem as we aren't likely to jump ship. I'm glad of the new router because we've had endless problems with the D-Link overheating when Wi-Fi is enabled

Posted by yea g
I know aye! my non-wifi modem gets hot enough to burn you when you touch it, so it is very hard to reset when it f***s up.

Actually, they will.

You have to change your modem to the new ADSL2+ modem. Telecom, Vodahug and TelstraClear can all supply them if your local exchange has been upgraded.

Is ADSL2+ available at my address?
...Telecom
...Vodafone
...TelstraClear

I'm keen but we should see if we can arrange an overseas guest such as PK, Masseur or one of the European or South African members as well. If not, then a Summer or Winter meetup as described previously would be fine by me.

@carkitter: Thanks for the link but we're not a new customer. It's a shame they don't normally do anything for their loyal customers.

I found out last night that my wireless router gets pretty warm too. And it's on 24/7 and has been for several months. It's not hot enough to burn but I wonder if I should be worried with it being warm so long?

Ring them. We have always been with them and they supplied our new router for free!

Yes, congratulations Muhammad Oli, or is that commiserations as you now have another thread to look after... When is Laffen going to employ you full-time?

...Vodafone Unfortunately although you're within a Vodafone Red Zone our new Red services are not available at your address.
...TelstraClear Highspeed services are only available in Wellington, Kapiti and Christchurch.

Oh 2009 lucky you! I'm scheduled for upgrade in 2011 argh!

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Thanks Amawanqa and carkitter! I should have the new one going shortly. I think carkitter will like this one.

In other news... I went into my local Vodafone shop today and guess what phone was there in dummy form! The W980! My girlfriend instantly fell in love with it, though she doesn't like the way the screen is set so far back when the flip is open.

Anyway its yours for $999, which in my opinion is a bit of a rip-off.

Posted by yea g
Lol we have alot of fun with those dummy phones at school. If you pretend to txt in class on them then teachers confiscate it! lol

There are much better deals than that available thru Expert Infotech and Digi Parallel Imports has the stunningly beautiful red version. After the disappointment of my V640i, I won't be buying any more 'official' phones.

Posted by yea g
What phone you getting next??

Posted by carkitter
Either a G705 or a W705.
My criteria is: SE, 3.2 MP camera, wifi, under $600

True, though some phones have very toned down Vodafone firmware. The C702 and K770i for example.

I found out the other night that my friend has bought himself a brown V640i. I had a quick go on it and to be honest, it was nothing special.

Posted by carkitter
I like the feature set of the V640i especially for the price, but 2 trips to the dodgy service centre has left it creaky and the latest firmware has stopped the camera saving photos on my Sandisk 8GB M2, which has me very p'ed off.

Posted by yea g
Really? that sounds wierd

Perhaps some clarification is in order here. I'm protesting against Sony Ericsson NZ's after sales service and Vodafone's slow release dates not . I'll happily buy a G705/W705 from an importer, avoid SENZ altogether and ensure Vodafone reps I encounter know it.

It is weird. I take photos, but they don't show up on the Sandisk 8GB M2, the original Sony 256MB M2 or the phone memory; odd indeed. I've been using the iPhone alot since I updated to the latest firmware but now that I've gone back to the V640i and discovered this, I'm not happy.

Wow that's a pretty bad fault. Maybe you could take it back and attempt to get yourself one of them G502s (then sell it on? ).

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I think I may have been mistaken (or my local Vodafone store were) when I quoted the NZ W980 price. The Vodafone website is now listing it at $899 which is $100 closer to being a decent price, but still not quite there.

phonedirect or some company is selling it for $719 free shipping, sadly its in CHC i think

i've been trying to get one asap for a reasonable price in auckland, still trying...

Posted by Spyra
why would anyone buy phones from vodafone is beyond me....

overpriced and stuck with shitty firmware

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
@Spyra: Welcome mate, even though I see you're no noob! I've added you to our New Zealanders list on the first page... Where abouts in NZ are you from?

PhonesDirect is based in Geraldine, which is a couple of hours south of Christchurch, and from a quick look at their website a few months back, I quickly wrote them off as untrustworthy, though they could be worth a look I guess!

Welcome Spyra, and good spotting too. Looking through their range, PhonesDirect is generally dearer than Expert Infotech except in the case of W960 and W902.
If $712 is their G705 release price, then after a few weeks EI should have it around $650ish I hope. I would have though it would sell for less than the $609 G900 but then the W960 is still $764 and $655 at EI and PD respectively.
I'm bookmarking Phones Direct now... cheers!

Anyone had a look at that new google maps street view? http://maps.google.co.nz

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah had a quick look. It doesn't go past my house, but it goes past one street over which is cool.

Posted by yea g
Yea, you can see all of my friends houses but not my house. lol

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
If anyone spots a non-import K770i for cheaper than $399 this side of the 20th of December could ya let me know? Getting one for my girlfriend but money is tight this year.

Posted by yea g
What do you mean by non import? Does that mean not from Expert infotech/parallel imported or not from another country?

anyway: http://pricespy.co.nz/pno_11919.html

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah not from any importer or overseas. Basically I want a Vodafone NZ model, and yeah I checked Pricespy already. Thanks anyway!

Posted by yea g
Here you go: http://www.pcwise.co.nz/catal[....]3=82&tier4=1058&catType=legacy

pretty sure its a vodafone one.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Thanks again, but that's an import also. It says "PI date" which means Parallel Imported date.

Posted by yea g
Why must you be so fussy?

Posted by carkitter
IMO your best chance is to keep an eye on the Dick Smith website because the do weekly online specials every Wednesday. Currently the Viewty is $399.

Posted by yea g
Yea and because its around xmas then they will have alot of stuff on sale

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Yeah, thanks I'll keep a look out. Hopefully they don't lower the price on boxing day!

Rumour has it that most consumer appliances and electronics will be getting a LARGE price hike after Christmas

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Really? Damn that's gonna suck. I was going to buy a nice big TV after Christmas...

Posted by yea g
Yea probably cause of the economy. Stupid economy, we were just fine until they decided to screw it.

I can't see that happening at all. Prices will stay low otherwise demand will dry up. Lower cost of petrol coupled with tax cuts will put more money in peoples pockets and retailers will want a big slice of it. International prices have dropped to stimulate sales: I recieved a pamphlet in the letterbox recently listing very sharp new RRP prices on Sony NZ goods such as Vaio, videocameras and digicams.

Posted by frankthetank
Prices are low to attract buyers, not because design manufacturing or material costs are low.

Manufacturers and suppliers cannot continue to hold prices down, especially with the flow on effect from economic recession hitting them hard with their own overheads.

The fact that you can buy a new Ford for $20,000 or less does not mean that Ford Motor Corporation is not in need of a massive bail out package to keep afloat, if you get my drift...

In the end the consumer has to pay for the loans required for the manufacturers to be able to manufacture and sell goods to break even or make a profit there is no avoiding that simple fact.

I also suspect that we may see a turn away from the disposable electronics industry and a return to the service industry
