well we have a lot more NZer's here than when I joined, when I first found out about this thread, it was mainly oli and carkitter posting

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
@carkitter: I guess you're right, and I'd imagine smartphones will only get slower the longer you own them, just like my damn laptop! I would love to try out a fancy smartphone one day though... Maybe as my next phone! By the way, how goes the iPhone?

@RevoWution: Awesome, it'll be good to have you around. Where abouts in NZ are you based?

@Brad : Yeah there were a couple of others like Soane28 drops in every now and then, and we had Frankthetank and Dionasaurus around the time you joined too. They've buggered off though!

@Oli

I'm in Auckland. And yourself?

That is so true about laptops. For some reason mine's getting slower and slower lol... Every startup takes longer than the previous startup

So I'm guessing everyone here are SE fans? I converted to SE about 2 years ago, when I got my W810i Before that I had my Nokia 7210 for about 5 years.

I remember when I got the 7210. It was $1000NZD :|

@Oli

Hey enough of that man!

I'm here just been on a block course at MIT for 3 weeks WITHOUT a computer so have had to go on a forum diet....

Anyhoo I'm back, just in time for the October Photo Comp...

What's been happening? I'm well and truly over living out of a suitcase in Otara and very happy that I won't have to go again as that was the final training course of my apprenticeship

Oh and FYI carkitter: Otara also gets 3G+ coverage remarkably... Must be something to do with the hoodrats all rocking round listening to ringtones through their cellphone loudspeakers lol

@RevoWution: Another Aucklander! It probably says something about the rest of NZ... I mean, you guys have all the parallel importers and stuff, so the rest of NZ has to buy Vodafone's crappy Nokias cause they don't know about imports!

Yeah I'm an SE fan, but no fanboy as I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Samsung if SE flopped. I've always had SE phones though, ever since my T100 in 2003, and I had an Ericsson before that! I'm now on my 10th SE phone if you count the three V600is I had due to faults!

EDIT: By the way I'm from Christchurch.

@Frankthetank: I was only messing around. But seriously, that Dionasaurus really did bugger off didn't he?

Anyway, I look forward to seeing your entry into the October competition. You've got my Timezone toy picture to beat this month!

Just out of interest, does your K850i get 3G+ reception in Christchurch very often? I've seen the 'H' symbol (same thing) on my C902 twice now. But according to carkitter, quite often we have HSDPA reception even when the symbol only says 3G!

well Oliver, I find that if I turn my phone to 3G only (via my phone explorer) I can always get 3g coverage at my house, but if it is on GSM/3G I can only get 3g in half the house

@RevoWution
Try downloading and running CCleaner, you'll be amazed how much unnecessary rubbish Windows accumulates. If that doesn't satisfy, try adding more RAM which is easier than it sounds. Check out my comments about my laptop upgrade a page or two back. For advice on RAM upgrade, check out the NZ PC Magazine September edition in your local library or online.

@frank
Thanks for the heads up about Otara. It's not a place I frequent but it doesn't surprise me to find that they have good data coverage. South Auckland is big on mobile downloads and R&B music. I've heard it said by Indsutry people that if the music industry didn't balance out sales with radio airplay, the national top 40 would be decided in Manukau city shopping centre on a Friday night!

The iPhone is OK. It truly is a love/hate relationship with such a beautiful UI and the novelty of touch input still not worn off nut as many limitations to deal with. You should get one because it really is a 'Mac in your pocket' and as a windows user it's just infuriating at times. Also the lack of modem and mass storage won't worry you at all. You should try this first before buying any other smartphone.

Me, I'm gonna convince the missus I reply need a G705a and the fact that she'll inherit the iPhone should help.

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
@Bradley: That's weird. I should try that I reckon. Might make some kinda difference...

@carkitter: Yeah I quite like the iPhone, but I do send quite a few PXTs, and I wouldn't wanna downgrade my camera so much! I'd probably wanna get what some people would call a proper smartphone.

Argh! my name is just brad, it has no ly, ley, lie, li etc. on the end
Ill stop now.

I know what you mean, but spend some time with an iPhone and you'll find that it's a mature phone for mature (not old) people. After this, I'm afraid everything else feels cheap, nasty and toy-like. This is a very classy phone and I feel good owning it. I'm even learning to type fast on this virtual keyboard.

I have a felling you guys would like the X1

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I did have a wee go on the iPhone at the Vodafone shop and I wasn't too impressed, but then I didn't go far into the menus or anything, and I didn't hold it cause it was attached to a dock. I'll have a look next time looking at phones, but as I say, the camera would be a huge let down to me.

Yeah Bradley, I'd love the X1. I just won't ever be able to afford one!

Posted by carkitter
No chance I'll be able to find the asking price which I'm expecting to be about $1699.

Expert Infotech now has T700 in stock at $499, about $100 overpriced IMO but it's early days...

@carkitter: You're a life saver introducing me to ccleaner!! This is the cleaning result i got:

CLEANING COMPLETE - (193.876 secs)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6,994.5MB removed.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Near 7GIGS of useless stuff!!

Posted by carkitter

Yup! Found an extra 4 gig myself when I first ran it. I've put a shortcut on my Desktop and run it nearly everyday. It's amazing how much unnecessary info Windows stores away that you don't need.

Posted by frankthetank
I've never seen either an "H" symbol or the 3G+ in Christchurch, hence why I noticed it in Otara...

Posted by yea g
I dont even have a phone with HSDPA

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
Wow, wish there was something like CCleaner for Mac...

2786mb with ccleaner here... VERY NICE. Thanks Carkitter!

Mac doesn't need it, unless you run Windows in addition to OS/X.
Windows creates cookie-like temporary info about every file you open and stores it away to enable things like My Recent Documents to work. As usual, it's not a bug but a feature! Anyway, you can see how big the file can get and imagine what that does to your processing speed when you need to open a 7GB file at the same time as opening your document or running your App...

Oh and don't forget to defragment the hard drive regularly. I do mine about once a month and have noticed a significant drop in fragmented files since running CCleaner.

It seems you can pre-order from an Australian trader on trademe for $1149...

I found that auction

But like you said earlier, I wouldn't trust $1149 with a trader with zero trades lol... Smells dodgy to me.

I think I'll be waiting for the Xperia

Posted by carkitter
I saw the HTC Touch at Parallel Imported in Manukau yesterday, also they've dropped the price of the N96 to $1399 and the N95 8GB to $1099 to match Vodafone who seem to be leading a price war ATM.

Anyone else noticed that PI aren't selling Apple products anymore? And the Vodafone store I bought my iPhone from, ten days later told me that they weren't allowed to sell them anymore either! There's something odd going on...

Posted by yea g
Strange...
Also does anyone know if A-gps works in NZ or do you have to use normal gps?

Posted by carkitter
A-GPS means assisted gps therefore is uses wifi and 3G to pinpoint your local without a satellite. It'll definately work here in NZ. Full GPS is the hard one to get going... For a long time we had no GPS satellite coverage here because no one would pay for it. BMW NZ finally stumped up over $100k to get it up and running so that their customers could use their Sat Nav systems in their new cars. Or so I heard. I think the iPhone has A-GPS and it works fine.

Ah ok then.

i talked to a vodaphoney person a few weeks ago about the C905, i think he said $1300 price for nz.
having looked at the picture quality, i must say it is a phone i'd like to have.also the xenon flash would be a bonus (after trying to get some decent shots from my g900 in a dark room).
however, since the nz$ has plummeted in the last couple of weeks, us$600 is now over nz$1100!!! so it will still be quite expensive to get, not only would you have to allow for postage, but also customs charges of 12.5% (gst).
however, touchscreen is da bomb (although a little temperamental), so i'm personally more inclined to wait for an 8.1mpx touchscreen sex beast.
but if i was going to get the C905, i would wait a couple of months at least, and also keep an eye on the exchange rate.i personally think anything over nz$800 is getting to be a bit much to pay for a phone.
in other news, i saw a K800i in noel leemings for $400!!!! i'm thinking maybe they have forgotten to put the lower price tag on it?

Posted by K71
a quiz picture for the kiwi's.
can you name the car, the race, the year, and the drivers? also what was the special connection with the car that finished behind it in this particular race?

Posted by carkitter
Haha!
It's a Ford GT40, specifically the one driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon at Le Mans (I forget the year) when the controversially won the race.

They were in 2nd place and the first placed GT40 was told to slow down so the two cars could cross the finish line together to maximize the photo opportunity -Ford beating Ferrari at LeMans was obviously a big thing. Anyway, because the two cars crossed the line exactly together, the officials decided the winner was the car which travelled the greatest distance in the 24 hrs and awarded the victory to the "2nd placed" McLaren/Amon car.

Hmmm... Could it have been 1966?

I think I just heard a report on the radio in the room next door about Black+White being available now? I couldn't hear it properly so I can't be sure... Will do some research.

EDIT: Yep, looks like it... No SE phones though!

That's because the K800i is just too awesome a phone and it would be blasphemy if its price was lowered to below $400

Looks like the Xperia isn't nearly as good as it was hyped up to be... The menu's pretty sluggish according to this review...

And for $800USD, it might not be entirely worth it. Looks like I'll stick with my trusty K800i

This from the NZ Herald today:

Police want prepay mobiles registered
12:26PM Tuesday Oct 28, 2008

Police are calling for prepaid cellphone customers to be registered on a national database to stop criminals using the phones.

Criminals are known to use the phones, which can be purchased without identification, because they believe they cannot be traced and can be disposed of easily.

Detective Senior Sergeant Darrin Thomson, of the Wellington metro crime unit, said the phones provided a "significant challenge" for police and requiring people to provide identification to buy one would help catch criminals.

"The use of prepaid cellular phones is a common use amongst the criminal fraternity, particularly at the higher level, and anything that would help us thwart that anonymity would be fabulous," he told The Dominion Post.

Vodafone said it would support a government-mandated register and Telecom said it was open to discussions.

- NZPA

source

I can understand the motivation for doing it but I can't see it working, it'll just create another black market. Crims won't register phones. Even car registration doesn't stop them, they just steal number plates. As someone who has lost several phones and not got them back, I would like to see more biometric scanners in phones like in the Porsche Design P9521.

Posted by carkitter
The vast majority of people only join up to access the free content, those who are going to hang around will pop up in the forum eventually.

Disappointing that B&W haven't brought lower Data prices to the marketplace but then I guess they are at the mercy of Vodafone's wholesale price.

LG viewty half price -$499 on the Dick Smith Electronics website. Not bad for a 5 Mp camera, 120 fps video, widescreen, touchscreen device.

hmm.. nice but I never liked lg much. I think I will still go with c905
