@ carkitter: heh unelss someone spraypainted a W800i, theres no black version at all. Otherwise they'd show it on the site

You have to wonder if telecom know where half their cables are any more

Ahh back from taking some time off.. Wish it was longer :/

Posted by carkitter
@gigs

Spray paint what? The W800 isn't available anywhere yet as far as I know. I think that she was confused with the K750i, but she was adament...

Posted by Gigs
She'd definately be confused.. the only way you could get anything liek a W800i would be to have a t-mobile D750 and paint it

Still a black W800i would be nifty..

If the rumours thread is true then sakura looks interesting too.

Posted by carkitter
How about a Black W800 with Lime Green on the sides and an Xbox theme...

prolly blasphemy but I far prefer NHL to rugby lol

Wish they'd do a silver with dark green w800i.. se colours are nice at least

Posted by carkitter
Err... NHL? Is that hockey? I liked to play hockey at intermediate school but got put off by other kids who thought that the follow through should be like that of golf.
Are you into summer hockey or Ice Hockey?

Posted by Gigs
Is hockey indeed, ice hockey definately. Though my old next door neighbour played field hockey in either the olympic team or something hehe forget now.

Got hooked while in canada, though I have to say after watching Canadian football and American football, rugby is an absolute delight.

How anyone can claim running 5 steps and being tackled is something worthy of a show and dance i'll never know.

Unfortunately had the tennis on yesterday as well.

Posted by carkitter
I heard that the NZ Ice Hockey champs was/is on at Paradise Ice in East Tamaki (Auckland). Did you have a look?
I've got my head around Grid Iron now and I do Like it. It's a strategy game rather than a action game, like comparing Cricket to Baseball.

Posted by Gigs
No I missed them.. (again) lol
Probably a good thing, paradice and me don't mix so well. (love the game, can't balance for crap )

yeah, Gi is alot more intense in the strategy dept, just could never get into it, too stop/starty for me..

Well that and the padding.. eesh

Guy in one of those vodafone stores said the k750 is gonna come out around the time vodafone releases 3g. I want the k750 but I dunno if I will regret not getting a 3g phone. Anyone know if any good 3g phones are gonna come out here?

Find answer here:

and here:

Note:K750i now $789 at P.I. S700i bargain at $649!

I saw in the dominion post the k750 was $699 at parallel imports.

I dont know but I heard vodafone was only going to bring out nokia 3g handsets. Maybe it was just to begin with?

Posted by Gigs
V800 will be and I'd imagine the V600i should be out on Vodafone when they release the 3G network, according to anyhow.

Hmm if voda are saying they're coming out the same time then that would make 3G being available in July?!

TBH until we see what their 3G dataplans and incentives are, its not going to be a big deal if you don't have 3G IMO.

If you're a heavy data user then it might become essential.

Called in to Sony Style in Newmarket yesterday.
Rep said that the K750i would be out 'officially' later this month. I also went to PI East Tamaki and saw the K750i for $699. MyMobile have a review of the K750i and quote an RRP of $749.

SS said not to expect W800 til October! Betcha PI have it within 2 weeks of overseas release as with K750i. SS quoted a RRP price of $800 for a 2GB memory stick duo and an estimated price of $1700 for the upcoming 4GB duo!

Have Vodafone NZ and Sony NZ lost the plot? How do they expect to sell ANY product at these prices and with these release delays?
Parallel Imported must be laughing all the way to the bank!
K700i now $399 at PI (they had an ex-demo unboxed model for $300!)

Posted by Gigs
Hmm $50 more for a 1 year warranty and support from nz? That doesn't seem outrageous to me

Remember PI's charge you for the full 1 year warranty that all products come with as standard.

That 2gb ms duo pro seems right, the PI's are selling 512's for 200 so * 4 = 800.

Not bad!

Have been told september for the W800i, so doesn't seem to far off. They might have said October just to be safe.

Posted by carkitter
It may only be $50 on the brand new K750i, but it's $100 on the K700i and $150 on the S700. Sony Style Newmarket still have a $799 price tag on thier K700i.
Vodafone have a RRP of $1000 still on the V3 but PI are selling the silver V3 for $589, the black one for a little bit more.
Who know what price PI get thier stock at, but that's beside the point.
Vodafone NZ would probably pay the same or less and that means that they're making a killing on the handsets as well as charging us some of the highest data rates and mobile phone plans in the world.
Just ask the commerce commision.

Posted by Gigs
Yes and No.. You're failing to take into account the fact that when buying overseas PI's can also buy from sources that subsidize the phones.

In the early days of vodafone they used to subsidize the cost of the handsets and so we ended up paying less, it helped them get their share of the market.

If you buy from overseas where the price maybe subsidized then you're already making something on it.

I highly doubt they're going through an official distributer to get stuff. Hell we never used to when I did PC imports. Yet the sources we used were very cheap. (Though eventually delt with a couple of manufacturers)

I myself doubt voda are getting the same price point as the PI's, thats part of what makes PI's attractive.

BTW new handsets are always going to be more expensive than previous versions so whats the point there.

For $100 more than the K700i you're getting alot more phone.

When I got out of selling PC hardware (and we were doing cellphones too) the margins weren't anything like 50% on products. nokia yes, because they were cheap as hell at the time. The only problem was that never lasted so you could get burnt pretty easily, 's sold pretty steadily. Unless you were prepared to slash your margins to almost nothing, then it was very hard to compete against parallel importers.

I made a mistake, Vodafone have different prices for the Silver vs the Black Motorola V3. The silver V3 is $310 cheaper at PI, the black version is about $410 cheaper.

I didn't make myself clear:
K700i is $100 cheaper at PI than VF
K700i is $400 cheaper at PI than SS NMKT
S700i is $150 cheaper at PI than VF
$699 buys you a K750 at PI. $799 buys you a K700 at SS NMKT or a S700 at VF, with K750 unavailable at both; which would you buy?

I dont like the whole concept of parallel importation of goods.
It destroyed NZ's automobile assembly industry.
The 1990's National government headed in this direction, then the current Labour government sped it up and savaged many manufacturing and value adding business' by legalising parallel importation of goods.
There is nothing wrong with the company 'Parallel Imported'. Good Luck to them!
The trouble is that VodafoneNZ and SENZ have seemingly put thier heads in the sand and have forgotten that we live in a Global Community now. NZ has a high degree of internet users and people who will go out of thier way to find a bargain. The SS nmkt staff member I spoke to, said that SENZ wanted to wait and see how the sales of K750 went overseas before releasing here as NZ sales of S700 had been disappionting. Hello! S700 on release sold for $1599, as NZ's most expensive non-PDA it was $400 more expensive than the next most expensive (admittedly less featured) non-PDA phone!
I believe it's now PI who is driving the retail cellular market in NZ and the reason behind VodafoneNZ's recent price drops.

I may have an opportunity to present these concerns to SE. I'd like to see them lift thier game other wise PI will make them irrelevant.

Hey Gigs, how's things? Good to see McLaren finally learnt how to make a car, even if their tyres aren't very good...better not be on Michelins, make sure....
And of course remember the advice an old master gave you once...he paid for his mistakes with blood, do not make those same mistakes again

You missed a hella paintball game you gimp!
yeah the racing has been alot more enjoyable this season, been missing some of the races. :/

Just looked on the sony ericsson nz website and the k750 is no longer coming soon on there.

Posted by Gigs
Yup shouldn't be long.. but I'm still waiting on the W800i.

Love the black of the k750 though but after seeing the silver branded versions someone posted.. I just know voda aren't going to be that kind to us lol
(the silver looks great apart from the black around the screen, but the branding looks abysmal)

Posted by JForce
Having trialled a W800 for a media review, I have to agree that I was very, very impressed. I had been looking forward to the K750i, but I now think that if I had to buy a phone, it would be the W800 for sure. It really is very very clever...just the little things.

Although I don't think I could do without my P910....I can't wait for the next one....

Oh and Gigs, I'm selling my laptop....seen the new one? It's CARBON FIBRE, AND IT KICKS MUCHO GRANDE ASS!

Posted by citysoldier
I just bought a copy of My Mobile and read the k750 review. They said the memory stick was an optional extra (they had 512 with their test model). Does that mean in NZ it wont come with even a 64mb memory stick? Is it even gonna come with a Usb cable and wateva else is supposed to come with it?

Posted by carkitter
I would have thought so... PI's website says in comes with a 64 MB card included. Vodafone would be nuts not to include it.

Posted by Gigs
@city: it'll come with the USB cable and 64 memory card.. I've yet to see not supply an MS duo/pro with any of the phones that take them. (albeit in sometimes horribly small sizes )

From what I've seen of PI boxes and phones sold here, the only difference is branding, and red vodafone boxes, they seem to have all the same accessories though.

@Jforce: yeah i'm thinking of doing the same, the 4000 looks the shit! The black is damned nice, and its 64 bit ... to match the desktop. Now if only it came with 1.2 terrabytes to match the desktop too

Need to find out if I can get a whole sale price on those this time, hopefully they're not just being done as retail only units. (though luck always says they will be :/)

Pity the race team its emblemed after sucks this year eh

Posted by zealander
the w800 looks like the beast, and if my t610 hadn't shat itself then i prolly woulda bought it. don't mind my z800 tho.

By the way, where does everyone buy their SE accessories from?

Apart from Trade Me, so far I've used www.mobilefly.com and www.expansys.com

*bump*

Vodafone launched 3G in New Zealand!!

So, anyone with tried to make a video call yet?
I've got 2 3G handsets (Z800 and a Nokia 6630)
so gave it a go yesterday. It's pretty cool!
(Video calls are free till October, apparently.)

Only gripe was the time it took to connect the call.

Posted by Gigs
yup, have done a couple of video calls now.
The novelty wears off after the second one.

Posted by brix25
Reading a news article about Vodafone's 3G launch in NZ this morning and I didn't know that Telecom NZ had a CDMA network using Sprint 3G handsets. Quite interesting.

Posted by Gigs
@brix:

Telecom have to have a deal with sprint, it's the only way for them to get handsets at a reasonable price.

Telecoms buying power = nothing
Vodafones = global

Posted by brix25
I'm not a fan of Vodafone and their branded handsets, granted they've got global reach and, at least in SA, these handsets are dirt cheap. What's the deal with Telecom NZ having CDMA while the rest of the world is on GSM?

Posted by zealander
@gigs, yup, the novelty certainly did wear off after a while.

I wondered why TV3 was going on and on about the launch, until i realised you can download videos of TV3 news and sport and music from C4. Must be a deal in there somewhere.

I guess I'll make a few video calls until October, when Vodafone will start charging for it. I think I'd rather send a video message instead.

Posted by hyperdude
Who has SE-DV100i here? How do I upload movies or play DVD on my cellphne? Thanks.

Posted by Gigs
main reason for TV3 hyping it is because TVNZ is in bed with telecom.

Which is fine, i'd rather have access to 3 news than One News.

I don't think I could take the flood of talant and old time music shows that TVNZ seems to trot out on TV1

Got my K750 yesterday. Bought it at parallel imported. They gave me a NZ plug but it is an old one. Was going to take it back today but dumb ass me left it when I got it out to take with me to work today. I was pissed off cause I couldnt use it at first but then I remembered I could charge with the usb cable : ) Its an excelent phone.

Still, I found the connection/signal is not as good as my Nokia 8310 (previous). I find it keeps dropping a bar randomly where as my 8310 kept full signal in most places.

Havent updated the firmware yet but I have the R1J002 firmware. I got the memory stick unavailable message when I opened the lens cover when it was charging. Its ok normally though.

The camera is great outdoors but inside its not so great. Improoves with night mode but yellowish.

Volume is ok as far as I can tell. Atleast so far.

Probably read this all already but this is what Ive experienced so far. Happy with my phone so far.

Posted by carkitter
@citysoldier
Congrats on your purchase! R2L software causes a degradation in camera quality so I've read so I would avoid the upgrade unless your K750i starts to freeze up. W800i firmware looks like a good option too.

Onto a new topic then...

Going totally Mobile

I am looking to get rid of my landline and Xtra Broadband connection and go totally mobile with Vodafone. I'd appreciate any comment's/experiences you have.

Here's my situation:

My wife and I live on Auckland's North Shore. I have a K700 and my boss has provided my with a 3G sim card and account. The missus has a Z600 with Motormouth 'on account' plan.
All our friends and relatives and my workmates are on Vodafone.
My parents and in-laws live on the Hibiscus Coast which is a toll call for our landline but free on the Motormouth plan when calling VF to VF.

We send Telecom $92.00 per month but I think we're wasting our money. We only use 1/2 of our 1GB Broadband capacity.

I have a laptop using WLAN but if I ditch the landline I can't get Broadband, therefore I need to get Wireless internet.

My Xtra 12 month contract is up in March 06 so I have time to weigh up my options.

Anyone else evaluating this or using VF mobile connect over 3G exclusively?

Hmm I can see ditching a landline in favour of a VF mobile only, especially since it works out for you having most everyone you know on a VF phone. (lifes great like that)

Broabband gets a bit trickier...

Is it possible to use some of the other broadband offerings from ihug and the like? Satelite is ruled out since you would need phone.

If you were on a UBS (unbundled bitstream) account where you pay line and account costs to the ISP (like slingshots 256k connection) I'm wondering if you still need an active line with telecom?

Else see PM car

Posted by carkitter
I can't find anything wireless on ihug or Slingshot; the latter has iTalk (VOIP) which looks interesting, I may have to give them a call.

Posted by carkitter
bump!

Currently looking into whether I can have a basic Telecom connection with no free local calls or toll discounts at a cheaper rate.

Posted by Gigs
kinda got me looking around as well but it doesn't look liek its easy to break away from anyone lol

Posted by carkitter
Rang Telecom.
Can't get a cheaper landline than $39.85 (in Auck anyway).

Have emailed Vodafone and told them same as outlined above.
Looking forward to thier reply.

It surprises me that with the issues of electric fences, rural delivery and coverage.. that no serious internet player has launches internet over power lines.

I am wondering if this might not have been a way for Telstra to go to get around needing telecom infrastructure for at least delivering wider internet to people..

Hell I know I treied out paradise simply to keep away form xtra. (Used to work for an ISP so have along standing dislike.. (mild lol) of telecom)

I still live in hope lol

Posted by carkitter
I understand your dislike totally.

Reply from Vodafone today:

At time of writing, cannot confirm when 3G will be extended to your suburb, so VF Mobile Connnect won't be much use to you at the moment. We've just released the 'You Choose' plans... yada yada yada...

Paraphrased of course.
Didn't expect to get fobbed off by Vodafone on this subject
Don't they want to be my sole telecommunications provider?
Is thier network not up to the challenge of providing residential internet sevices?

I'll keep my eye on VMC but Woosh may be my best bet for Wireless Internet short term.
Guess I'll just have to wait for coverage to improve, while throwing my money away on Telecom's Services.

Posted by Gigs
Woosh is definately your best bet for any large data internet usage. Vodafone you'll be paying through the nose.

I am gr8 fan of SE..

got lots of ideas degining and makign a true SE phone

can some one gve me the email id of SE CEO

i can be reached at wamiqmaqbool99@yahoo.com

Hmmmmmm NZ.. Kool

Posted by carkitter
@wm222002
Why not email Cheacomm with your ideas. They love other peoples designs.

Back on topic:

500MB per month would be fine. I don't need to download heaps of software. Mainly just to surf Esato, TradeMe, find stuff on Google and for my eldest son to play Stick-Cricket.

I wonder if Vodafone will review it's Data Pricing as Ihug have announced a 2 Mbps connection for $29.95 per month (when you include toll calls) which makes VMC look pretty sad at $149.00 per month for 384 kbps plus optimisation ( 1GB plan comparison).

Sure VMC offers advantages in portability, but not as portable currently as plugging into a phone jack.

Posted by Gigs
Thats the problem though, Voda, like Telecom will never have data plans that go against commercial ISPs. (Well telecom prolly could but they'd be taking a huge hit on data if they did)

I have heard alot of mixed stuff about woosh though, alot comes down to the signal you'll get at your place though.

As for ihug, i've personally decided never to let them have another drop of my money so long as I shall possibly live. Comes from working there in the past though lol

Posted by carkitter
Well, latest developments:

Due to sudden unforseen changes to our income, my wife and I have decided to hasten our decision regarding our Telecom bill.

In other words, we going to cancel our Xtra Broadband THIS week and our landline by the 20th of December.

I have sucessfully setup GPRS connections through both our phones and surfed briefly by GPRS via Z600 for the first time earlier tonight; quite cool too, I reckon.

We're gonna reduce our internet useage to emails only for a while, so you'll see me on Esato very infrequently in the future. My boss has very generously offered to allow us to connect to GPRS through my work 3G SIM card with whatever business discounts that may include. I shall need to inquire with his VF account manager about that.

I shall probably go with a Orcon Accelerator Dial-up plan.

At present we're still on the broadband, once we sign up with an alternative ISP, we'll start making the changes.
