Hard drives in phones?

Y bother when there r 2+gb flash chips? Less power, faster & more reliable.. Not to mention $! Goin backwards?

two problems i have with hard drives in phones:

1. power consumption (if my sister's 7610 can't even last a full day, i'd hate to think what the N91 would be like.)

2. dropping the phone, which we all do occasionally. do it a couple of times and you would probably need a new drive.

i'd much rather stick with flash memory, especially since 4gb MSD's will be out by yearend. by then, the prices of the 2gb's should be more reasonable.

not to mention they're a bit heavy too.

the N91 is 160grams because it is made from stainless steel
it lasts for 12.5 hours when you only play music from the 4gb hdd

oh and compactFlash uses 3.3 volts and microdrives (IBM) 5 volts, but for a phone the tiny harddrive uses no more than 3.6 volts.

although currently flash memory looks more attractive, we cann't really say anything about the future. Hard drives are getting smaller and better....

i think hard disks offer cheaper storage of data then flash memory cards.in future itll be increasing very much
and samsung has already showed us some interesting solutions with hard disks and flash (something like memory buffer but i think its much smarter)

how many portable devices have hard drives now? how reliable?
maybe we'll start seeing removable hard drives instead of memory cards if they work well.

but memory products have changed so much in the last few years, i wouldn't be surprised by anything.

im not sure im going to enjoy the day we start seeing mechanical drives on mobile phones, same a mechanical zoom....to me it spells disaster but thats my opinion

I think mem sticks are way to go due to interchangablity. Hard discs cannot be interchanged like mem sticks.

I'm with Davo here, considering the knocks and the bouncing about the mobile phones get in daily use I wouldn't want there to be something with moving parts like a hard drive in there, you'd have bad sectors on it or even an unuseable drive within months, perhaps weeks, no matter how well protected it is!

And given people's propensity to store their lives on their phone, and many don't back that data, pictures, games, music etc. up, if that hard drive breaks, they're in big trouble, and very pissed off!

I say memory sticks will take over hard drives. Hard drives seem cool because of the memory size...

removable hard drives? You want to be able to hotswap in a phone?

Memsticks is the way to go. Even USB sticks would work.

i could be wrong but arent there hdd in ipod and they take more of a bashing day to day than the aveg phone, the amount of peopl i see in the gym running etc with ipods and they never seem to suffer any problems

I foresee problems in the teething stages, but maybe the harddrives will be suspended on some type of suspension platform to counteract small/mediocre knocks. However,i thinks mmc/msd is the way to go.Cd's and dvd's will soon be replaced by mem cards imo.

Posted by Sammy_boy
@slattery, very true, they do (I have an iPod mini with one of those HDDs), but mobile phones tend to go everywhere with people and used more - perhaps I'm getting iPod usage a bit wrong here, but my iPod doesn't go everywhere with me, perhaps if I didn't drive and used public transport a lot perhaps it would go more places, but perhaps not as many as I would go with my phone?

Its obvious that cds and dvds are gunna die, mem cards are eventually gunna take over

Posted by shyam335
i doubt it,cd'd and dvd's might die,but it'll be replaced by its worthy successors like BDrom's hddvd's ,holographic disks etc.For mass storage hdd is the best way to go,i dont think flash memories can replace them anytime soon.
i think there are reliable hdd's (for handheld's) which can handle decent amount of shock and vibrations

Memory chips are getting cheaper and cheaper everytime a new technology is introduced -- whether in the materials used in the memory device itself of in the mass production process. IMO Flash memory chips will eventually replace microdrives.
