I have install'd nfs ug2. Installation is complete, but the game is highly pixelated. The display is black. The map area shows some wierd char mainly something that looks like z. I have updated directx, install'd latest tnt2 drivers and dxdiag shows no errors. Increased and manually set page file to 1000mb. Nothing in the help section. Also tried opening nfs5, the game hangs b4 menu screen. I'm able to race in nfs ug2, i just go on hitting "enter". Menu cannot be read and is mainly black and white. HELP!

Can you read / change the 'display' options in the games' menu? Sounds like the game is switching to a low resolution and colour depth when it starts up.

I cant read it. I just kept on hitting enter to start the game. It is very horrible. I have seen the menu b4. So i know how it is supposed to be. Desktop settins are 1024x768x32. Yes the game uses a lower res but does it change color depth too. If this is the case, how do i go about fixing it?

I think its time for a new graphics card my friend, regardless of whether thats the cause of the problem . TNT2? I have 2 of those spare, just sitting here!

No. I'm not buying a new graphics card. You yet any way.

Sorry but EA games are picky with graphic cards, to able to run most of EA games you should have a good one.

If you downloaded the last driver, directx, patches, tweaks, ... and still have the same result then it's your graphic card

as i told the issue is the same with nfs5 that used to run fine on the system, (so i know it works, but damn this time it is stubborn, worse, no errors to help me solve the problem, PC just says no errors....) i changed the processor and motherboard b4 the format, i have put in AMD sempron and a asus mobo? could that be the reason? it used to work fine on my P4 before it went kaput. sfter the format; and then it too has stopped working. anything that uses the hardware portion of the card hangs... this is how the menu looks...

the bottom right corner should be syaing "race" or "quit" or something like that.... see the trouble?

You could try using the Nvidia settings console (should appear as an icon in the system tray) to force the game to use the resolution and colour depth that you desire rather than having it on the default 'software controlled' settings.

Other than that, I'm afraid that I'm inclined to agree with the other guys, those games don't like your card, or at least your card in the new mobo

oh man,ur card dont even have dx8 compatibility (not to mention about shaders) , time to get a new gfx

Posted by govigov
No no. It cant be. What is dx8? Directx8? I got direct9 install'd?

I would look at downgrading your video card drivers to be honest Govi. Given you're using a tnt2 - its highly doubtful that any driver above 23.12 or eve the 14.xx series is going to be beneficial for you.

All else fails, if you're running XP, run the game in compatibility mode for 2k or 98.

Posted by govigov
@gigs. Yes, i will try that.

Posted by nitesh
Where did you buy the cd from?

Posted by govigov
this is how the game looks at the moment...

@gigs, i tried that, no use.... more ideas?

Here's the problem Govi:

MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
===========================
Windows 98, 98 Second Edition, ME, 2000 Professional, XP Professional, or XP Home operating system
Intel Pentium III (or compatible) CPU running at 700Mhz or higher
32MB DirectX 9 compatible video card (Geforce2 or higher) using a
supported chipset

128MB of RAM (256 MB using Windows 2000 or XP)
DirectX compatible sound card
Hard Drive Space: 450 MB free Hard Disk space, plus space for Direct X9 installation.
Sound: DirectX compatible Sound Card8X CD-ROM

Even though you've DX9 installed, your card isn't compatible with DX9 so it aint gonna work

You can get a GeForce FX5200 very cheap nowadays, and they're not bad cards at all

Posted by shyam335
can fx5200 run any new games in dx9 mode , 5200 is pathetic , its beaten by gf4s in dx 8.1/ 8 mode , but 6200 is good.
or id suggest ati radeon 9550 or 9600 (which is gonna be really cheap).

@shyam335

FX 5200 runs Doom3 in medium detail at an average of 30FPS and it has full DX9 compatibility, so quit raising your eyebrows

I never said it was a high-end card, it's an ideal card for people who don't want to spend a fortune but want to be able to play all but the most demanding of games and don't mind compromising a bit of detail quality.

NFS underground runs fine on an FX5200 on anything above 1.5Ghz with 256Mb or more memory.

Posted by govigov
Will dx9 damage my card? Also, can doom3 work on this one? I dont want to loose money again. Am on sempron2200+ which i can overclock and have 256mb ram.

Posted by Cycovision
dx9 won't hurt your card at all, and doom3 won't run with that card, unfortunately

yer u want what i got 128 6600gt's sli pci-e u jealous i knoooowwww you are!

Posted by govigov
My upgrade might be a 256mb one. ;-)

Posted by DJcreamz
lol £600 on 256 gt's is a little extreme unless u live in ur pc

Posted by govigov
You are right. I dont think it costs 600pounds over here, but still, it is pretty over the budget for me.

i was taliking about d3d not openglthat is, run any new games like farcry,hl2 at decent resolutions and details at decent framerates , i dont think so,its hugely underpowered, remember in each revision, nvidia increased the clock speed, which itself shows even nvidia was not happy about its yields.the point i was saying is we're using dx9 to get more reality or more eye candy ,but unfortunatley i can say for sure ,it cant provide that goal.it has full dx9 compatibility but only able to run games in slideshow in dx9

Posted by govigov
i got an onboard 32mb on my asus mother board... that is shared... can it be utilised.. i removed the tnt2 from the slot and installed thie onboard one, i can see the cars now.... but very vey bad quality... i mean pathetic.. is the only word.... can the onboard one be increased to 64mb somehow? i mean in BIOS i have put it in 64mb and 4x aperture, bit of a joke i think, no use...
