s700i still rebooting

SE has a big habit of concentrating on the soon to be released products at the expense of the older ones.

Posted by Rookwise
Still no rebooting after upgrading. Phone has not been off for nearly 2 weeks now (been charging it while it switched on as well).

Posted by se4me
Just got off the phone to se about this rebooting prblem they said its not a known fault with the s700i, so theres no plans for a fix and was told its probabley the handset, but theres too many of us with the same problem, unless everyone with this problem contacts se either by email or phone there will NOT be a fix...!!!

Ive got to send my phone to the postal repair service to check it out will be without my s700i for 7 - 10 days

Does anyone have bluetooth problems conecting to headset?

Posted by sapporobaby
I have documented the following with my s700i:

It has BT problems in that it sometimes simply disconnects.
It will sometimes have to have the BT turned off and then back on again to work.
It crashes and reboots under BT if I use a USB charger to charge it.
I think that the rebooting might be a problem of power as I can create this error pretty regularly.

SE knows that this is a problem but the guys working on the other phones have to get those right. This is SE's watershed moment and they can make or break the market with the new phones coming out. s700i users, sorry. No time.

Posted by Rookwise
Ah well. Thought it was too good to last. My dad has just tried to ring me and my S700 did a short vibrate and then rebooted

Guess the latest firmware doesn't fix the problem either.

EDIT: I've just emailed to see if there will be a fix to the problem. Should be interesting to see what the reply/fobbing off will be.

My email:-

I have owned my sim free S700i since Sept 04 and have previously owned many Ericsson and Sony Ericsson handsets. Ever since I started using the S700i phone it has been really useful and reliable. The only problem I have found is that the phone keeps restarting. Sometimes it would happen internittently and on occasion 4-8 times daily. I have taken my S700i to my nearest Sony Ericsson service center 7 times now and they have always said it is due to a software problem and they have installed the latest software that was available at the time(s). This did not correct the problem as after a week the phone would begin to restart. The last time I handed my S700i into the service center it was away for 5 weeks but eventually I was told that it was again a software fault ????
I've since upgraded the software myself using your online update service but the problem is still present. I know of at least 50 other S700i owners who also have the same problems and more.

Will there be an update soon that will correct this problem ?
I was looking into buying a K750i when it's released but if the ongoing reports of the increase in faults in recent Sony Ericsson handsets continues I will have to make another choice in phone.

Add my name rook. I had mine reboot three times in a row. It was on power, and the phones was connected to my computer via BluePhoneElite. I think the problem has to do with the BT and power. Other than this, it is quite fine.

Posted by Killhippie
Pretty much the same here with mine,it rebooted yesterday when trying to send a photo as an mms i had just taken, mine seems to be related to file manager,it only ever seems to reboot when using that feature to look at pics.To be fair all phones have glitches its inherent in most software these days, nokias were famous for the reboot error a while ago.To be honest its a great little phone and ive had much worse, but an update to fix it would be good.

Rookwise good luck blackmailing SE It doesn't work, I can tell you this from my own experience

Posted by skaterboy
So nice to hear I'm not alone. Have had an unbranded s700i about three months. Reboots often. Mostly when I get a call coming in. Does the screen going blank with greyish pixels at the top thing. Really annoying as call's don't get through when it does it. So finally got a DSS 25 and did the software update tonight but not sure if it has fixed it yet. Said the update had completed successfully but did not tell me what version I had or what version it has upgraded to. Love the phone / hate the phone. Thinking of getting a Nokia instead!

Posted by sapporobaby
The one thing that we might be able to do is to make a very public stink about the s700i and recommend that people do not buy the new soon to be released phones. These new phones have the chance to make or break SE and I am quite sure that they are counting on these phones to push them over the top. If we start an email campaign to phone mags, blogs, SE, etc.... they just might think that we are serious. They know that there is a problem with this phone, but either they do not know how to fix it, or they have no time due to the imminent release of the newer phones.

Well. I got a reply of sorts.
All I can say in response is:-

I FCUKIN KNOW IT A SOFTWARE PROBLEM !!!!!. The software has been upgraded 7 times now and the last time it was sent to ACR Logistics !!!! :

Conclusion/translation of reply:-

Although we at take so long and thoroughly test our products before they are released. We get a half decent, buggy UI up and running and churn it out on various formats to make do. If you happen to have a problem then tuff sh1t. If you want us to do something with your handset. Please throw it in a cardboard box and in 8 months time we will put the same piece of sh1t software on it, throw it back in a cardboard box (which will be very battered) and will get around to returning it to you as soon as we can be bothered to put a used stamp on (roughly 6 months unless we lose your phone in which case expect delivery the next side of never).

Have a wonderful day

nice one rookwise, surley theres somthing we can do if we all pull together and if theres enough of us, i was told the same to send it into ACR Logitics but i know it will be just the same as you, gone for weeks with no result
i will send them a email to, and anyone else thats having this problem, we can only try

Posted by poutsaras
Mine, reboots very often & i found that it also reboots when i try sending a very large file via Bluetooth!A few days ago, tried to send a MP3 song(around 1,5 MB)& the phone always rebooted!I sent them e-mail & i'll check for their response now & post it here!

I think the more people that complain about this problem the better.
Maybe we should do what some people have done about the networks.
We complain to Watchdog and let them investigate the problem

Posted by whizkidd
Er..what is watchdog?

Posted by Rookwise
Its a company/TV program that investigates complaints and actually goes public on TV about the nature of the complaint. It was them that got O2 to remove the K700 and S700 from the shelves because there were conflicts with the phones and the O2 branded software. Another problem was that the O2 branded K700 and S700 had problems sending sms messages (either not sending them or sending multiple copies of the same sms) causing people to be overvharged on their accounts.

Posted by whizkidd
Thanks. But this multiple sms bug exists here too. And it was not handset related. But there's one difference. People got charged only once. Only the receiver gets the same message every 20 minutes for two days! Annoying!

Posted by Rookwise
Very annoying.

O2 have just reciently put the K700 and S700 back up. Hopefully their problems are sorted now.

But there still seems to be a problem with the S700 regarding the rebooting problem. I think as many people should complain to watchdog about
It may be worth doing.

Posted by sapporobaby
Hey Rook,

You got an address for them?

Posted by Rookwise
Will see what I can do

EDIT:

Woo. That was a quick search.

Lets get complaining people

I propose that we send them all the correspondence, a copy of this thread. I have 5 of my repair receipts and other docs. We also forward a copy to SE, but first and give them one last chance to fix things. If not, we go public.

Posted by Rookwise

Sod that. I think have had enough chances as everyone who's contacted them about this problem has been fobbed off.
Will be putting in my complaint tomorrow along with links to here and other threads. I still have the email reply I recieved as well.

If people act now something should get underway.

Posted by sapporobaby
Agreed matey. You think we should still give them a heads up that the sh.t is about to hit the fan?

Posted by se4me
Ill also contact watchdog, the more we do can only help our problem

Posted by sapporobaby
@Chris and Rook.

Guys, I can make my phone reboot at will. I demonstrated it today, 6 times in a row. I can make it reboot or at least in some cases control the rebooting. Here is something I want you to test if you do not mind.

Make a call with your phone, and lay it down while it is calling. Try laying it next to or on top of your computer, desk or laptop, lay it down on your TV and see if it reboots in any of these occasions. Now, make a call and lay the phone on the floor completely away from everything and see if it reboots.

Let me know what happens.

Posted by se4me
yeah your right first time i tried it re booted straight away, dialed a number and layed it next to laptop, rebooted

yep tried afew times reboots every time

Posted by se4me
Ive placed my s700i on top of a small tin box with a cloth inbetween the tin and the phone when you call the phone number of your s700i it reboots again, just proves there somthing wrong, can this be software ? I dont think so maybe it will cost se to much to replace all s700i handsets thats why they have ro records of this problem,
I hope Watchdog can help us here...!! se could give us a free K750i for our troubles

Posted by sapporobaby
It could mean that the phone is not shielded properly and susceptible to EMP. I can make it crash at will. The thing is, the normal service techs will have no idea what to do, and will get that "deer in the headlights" look and go "uhhhh. never saw this before". This goes all of the way up to the top, i.e. SE engineers. I am sure that they had, have, and would not have had an idea about this.

I recommend that we archive this thread so that it can be shown to SE. Chris or Rook, I think that we should contact Laffen and see how to save this thread and forward it to SE.

Posted by csi_bha
Sorry to disapoint you, but there is no point at all in contacting watchdog.

They have their own agenda, and if your issue doesnt fit they wont take it up. I've first hand experience of this.

Even if they do take the story up, it might put a different slant on the story than what you want.

For the record I can make calls on my fone, sat right infront of my pc. (mine is an unbranded S700i) on 02 from The Link.

Posted by se4me
@csi
Now try placing yr handset on somthing metal or tin then call it from another phone try afew experiments and post back we would like to know if its not afecting all s700i's
mine is a generic hanset to unbranded

Posted by sapporobaby
Agreed about Watchdog, considering that I have never heard from them. I think that main problem is that there is a design flaw rather than a software issue. The fact that yours is o2 and works, as opposed to mine being a brand new, from the factory model shows that the common denominator is the design of the phone. Not software. I think that the problem that some of us are facing is the phone's processor is being bombed by waves from external devices.

Posted by Rookwise
Just tried mine and it certainly does reboot when placed on or next to any electricial equipment. If I make a call and hold/stand it upwards on my pc etc it works fine.

The main problem I face it that it reboots when I'm in a car. Either driving or otherwise and the bluetoothe cuts out more often as well.

@Csi. My friend has an O2 branded S700 and an Orange branded S700 and they are experiencing the same problems. They've just done the test and got the same results.

Btw. Do the reboot trick and after its restarted. Check you redial list.

Posted by se4me
doesnt have to be electrical, place your phone on anything metal call it then watch it reboot

Posted by csi_bha
just tried mine placed flat down onto a metal notepad holder - and called it from my k700.

no rebooting at all. :s

Mine is a sim free phone on an 02 contract, cos its from the link they give you an unbranded fone.

Posted by sapporobaby
This should verify that in a way SE was correct in that it is not a S/W issue. They probably do not know that their or our phones are probably being affected by EMP and metal surfaces. As another test, I placed mine, on my other computer (Compaq), it was turned off, and boom.... Reboot. It seems that the brand of computer does not matter as I have a Mac and Windoze PC. The phone must be reacting to some magnetic sources. We do need to go public with this though.

@CSI

Can you try the test around a TV, not just the metal pad. My reasoning is that maybe the metal pad is grounded and not able to effect the phone.. Try sitting it on a computer, near the processor or somewhere in the area.

Ive tried it on afew things, in a frying pan..lol in tin bowel and on a tin box...lol sounds crazy but it reboots everytime when the phone is called on these items rings once then reboots

Posted by sapporobaby
@All the rebooters ,

Can we try to get a tally of the types of phones. Branded, unbranded, o2, Vodafone, E-Plus, etc...?

I have had two phones. One E-Plus and generic. Both rebooters.

Maybe we need to even start a new thread so that we can add these up and send the results to WatchDog and SE.

Posted by sapporobaby
Also, can we try to get some photographic proof, i.e. photo's or videos? This seems to be an interesting problem that will need documentation.

Posted by se4me
just tried it while the phone was on coins, YES it re-booted so if you have loose change in the same pocket you will miss your call, i will deffently take this further now, ill post a little vid of it

Posted by Quo
thanks :)

Posted by se4me
when you take out the memory card it doesnt reboot tried it on various things, put the card back in and it reboots

Posted by sapporobaby
I did this few weeks back. I changed from my 128 back to the stock 32 meg card. I even put all the ringing tones and everything directly on the phone rather than having them read from the card to no avail. It is the phone, pure and simple. I you are having some success with the card out can only mean that your phone is having some serious issues.

One thing I will try is another sim card, from another network provider. I am currently using Sonera in Finland and my phone is the boot machine. I will try a Vodecrap, I mean Vodafcuk, er Vodafone and then see what happens.

Posted by csi_bha
rang if from when it was sat on the metal base of my pc (and monitor, its all in one) and it went funny and rebooted yes....

interesting.

however, called the partner's V800 on vodafone and that didnt reboot at all... however, all SE (and watchdog) will say is why are you putting it right on a metal surface or near mangnetic items, such as the warning in the manual says not to put it near any other magnetic items.

Good point CSI.

Does it say not to place near any magnetic or metallic items?

Posted by se4me
Thougt it might be the same sort of problem why it reboots anytime anyplace, might be conected in some way

AFAIK its standard in the manuals to shove that in, covers them in the eventuality

Posted by sapporobaby
Just read the manual. Can not find anything anywhere in there about metal, or TV's. Just mentions medical equipment, and explosive environments. So, they have a problem with their product.

Problem is, they'll ask why you put the phone in that situation, however the coins one will be interesting for them to answer. But I honestly dont think watchdog are worth it. Look how they made out that it was sony ericssons fault for the k700 - when actually its 02's for having a crap sms system that they havent touched since 97!
