HONG KONG--Nokia last night announced the launch of six new mobile phones as well as Bluetooth accessories at a press event held in the Special Administrative Region.

Themed "Colours of Life", the product launch was attended by journalists and guests from around Asia, and was held simultaneously with another Nokia event in Barcelona, Spain, where three of the phones were introduced.

The highlight of the show was Nokia's first imaging phone, the 7650, which comes with a color screen, built-in camera and multimedia messaging capability (MMS) that allows users to send long messages, pictures and audio to other users.

Unveiled in a simultaneous countdown with the Barcelona event, the 7650 is the Finnish company's answer to the multimedia messaging era.

"The launch signifies a breakthrough in mobile communications. With MMS, we will see a new era of mobile messaging where people will be able to share their personal experiences in images, sound and text combined," said Jorma Ollila, chairman and CEO of Nokia, in a statement.

The 7650 can be seen as a challenger to Ericsson's T68, with its navigation joystick and large color LCD (176-by-208 pixel) display that covers almost all of the phone. Underneath the cover rests a small keypad, which slides out for use.

The phone runs on a EPOC Symbian operating system, and supports General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) which offers speedy and "always-on" Internet connection, and High Speed Circuit Switch Data (HSCSD) which lets users connect at high speed on a standard GSM line.

There is also Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), infrared connectivity and Bluetooth, which allows the phone to communicate wirelessly with a Bluetooth headset, laptop, handheld or other enabled devices.

According to the Nokia spokesperson, images of up to 640-by-480 pixels can be captured and attached with text and audio, then sent to another MMS phone user or to an email account.

Alternatively, the 7650 can use Club Nokia's Photo Zone services to edit, share, or even send e-cards using the captured images.

Phone with wallet application
The product launch also saw the debut of the new Nokia 6510, whose key feature is the wallet application that Nokia claims can allow users to make secure transactions via the phone's WAP browser.

The handset supports ECML (Electronic Commerce Modeling Language), which is an open Internet standard for digital wallets and online merchants for exchange of transaction information.

According to the senior vice president of Nokia in Asia Pacific, Nigel Litchfield, the company aims to provide a secure yet hassle-free environment for users to make use of their mobile for remote (e.g. online banking, bill payment) as well as local (e.g. point-of-sale payment for shopping, taxi payment) transactions.

Using the example of a Jupiter Communications survey, it was found that 27 percent of Internet transactions are often invalid and rejected because of incomplete forms and information. Nokia aims to make it easy for users to access stored credit card information (up to five cards can be stored) in their phones for online transactions.

According to the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer, the Nokia 6510 supports WAP, GPRS and HSCSD for data connections. It comes with a four-line display with blue backlit and an integrated FM tuner, much like the recently launched Nokia 8310.

A rugged model
Nokia also introduced a new phone for the active user, the 5210. Adopting a new tougher design for enhanced durability, the handset is equipped with stopwatch, countdown timer, interval timer and even a thermometer. There will be accessories supplied for the phone to be worn on the wrist or arm.

Asian audience
Nokia also unveiled three new phones exclusively for Asian consumers.

The 3350 will be the latest in the 33xx series, and offer personalization features such as ringtone composers, interchangeable covers, customizable SMS alerts, three new games, as well as downloadable additions to the existing games via WAP.

The 8850 will also have a successor, the 8855. This feature-rich phone comes in a smooth black-matt finish and features an illuminated white LCD display, WAP, and a sliding keypad cover.

The new 6500, not to be confused with the 6510, has a specially designed active flip cover and offers a white backlit illumination for the LCD display. The phone comes integrated with support for GPRS, an FM radio, WAP and voice commands.

Nokia also showcased a new range of Bluetooth 1.1-compliant products, which include a wireless headset, wireless car kit and connectivity card.

The new phones are expected to be available in Asia in first quarter of 2002 except for the Nokia 7650 which will only be on sale in quarter two. As at press time, Nokia said pricing details will be confirmed nearer launch dates.
