Besides nokia, most brands seem to generally ignore EDGE. Anyone has some insight into this?
Posted by ares
They probably prefer to focus on Umts
Posted by wapt
Not many besides Nokia. There are Sony Ericcsson phone american versions, PC cards. Motorola and Samsung anounced edge phones also, but have never seen one from them in the market. There is also a PC card by another modem manufactuer Sierra wireless.

I'm very very disappointed due to the non availability of EDGE enabled SE phones.
Posted by mrao
Me too. I was hoping that at least one of the new releases would be edge enabled:-(

SE S700A has edge but it is only available in japan .
Posted by OluYom
Looks like nokia currently has a monopoly of the EDGE market. That is a significant number of subscribers in africa, europe and asia, to be precise. And some people wonder how nokia continues to sell so much!
Posted by phsychomantis
Se Treats india as 2nd rate country so it doesn't pays much attention towards the needs of people in india .
Posted by Oogamous
Does anyone have any info on whether SE plans to launch some new EDGE phones any time in the near future?
Posted by Residentevil
They shouldn't because India is the second most populous country in the world. Over 1 Billion peeps live there.
Posted by phsychomantis
Thats right but ppl here dont have high buying power like europe or japan .

edge is still new and it's competing with 3g so just give it a little while. it's taking off rather quickly here in the U.S. where there is no 3g. of course nobody knows what it is...
Posted by whizkidd
Er... .how can EDGE compete with 3g? The latter is much much better!
Posted by mario2002
I would'nt say competing buddy. EDGE is for all the networks which could not afford/procure a 3G licence. And unfortunately are quite a few around the world.Secondly EDGE is much much cheaper to implement then UMTS (3G) and lastly 3g represents les then 1% of all cell networks. Probably in a few years time that will change. But then again probably not.ATM it looks like most of the users are happy to use a phone just for normal 'talking' with a selected few spearheading the way into video calls which is one of the 3g offerings.Lets wait and see. Is a pity SE is not implementing EDGE.The financial constrains thru which the company is going after the Pxx fiasco surely plays a role.Greetings from SA.Mario

@mario2002 is it true that SE is going to pull out its p series phones from japan ?

Posted by mario2002
Buddy, Japan is a "test bed" for new products for most of the local and some international companies. The P-series showed promis in the begin with the original release but failed to capitalize on that.Because the developing costs where quite high SE had to price it accordingly, which ment that only a specialized (and fairly small) market bought it ! Also the royalties SE had to pay to Nokia for every sold device played a smaller rolle into its demise.(it uses a form of symbian operating system which is a Nokia development) Althou the SE fans badly want a 'upgrade' so far no official announcements have been made.I personaly liked the P800 and I hope to see a P1000 this year or early next year. One thing is for sure. That marked is strongly dominated by Nokia with their 9xxx line up (and in a lesser extent the 7710)lets wait and see. :-)

backl to topic. it seems foolish for the other brands to neglect EDGE. The platform is sure togrow, seeing how expensive it is to set up a 3g network.
Posted by mario2002
Hi guess the other brands have realized Nokia basically has the EDGE market under complet control. Resistance is futile ;-)
Posted by namal
Yep. And what a shame that is too. I think that is really holding them back. Even new se's dont have them.

Given the results of the Edge user poll so far it would seem edge is, like the single using poster, a minority for people. It certainly does depend on your country for instance wether or not edge seems important.
It may be important in the US, but then again so is decent hand sets. Recomended a friend to get an
there lately and they couldn't find a thing, the only decent phone their carrier had was the RAZR.
@psychomantis: I doubt
are deliberately doing ANYTHING to India. They have edge cards so they're certainly not neglecting the travelling business man with a laptop in india.
As has been pointed out, price seems to be an important issue in india, even if they released the an edge phone for India there would there be sufficient sales to make it worth the time? I doubt it. (Simply because if they did it would be a mid to high end phone, and those don't seem to go down to well there)
The other point to take into consideratoin is while some carriers may offer edge within a country, how much is edge taken up by the consumer in the country where its available.

@mario - i should have been more clear. i meant popularity-wise. anyway, i'm gonna say it here and now. i think edge is growing and 3g is dying (i am really not trying to start an argument) and that's why
and other manufacturers aren't implementing it. i think edge is faster even right?
Posted by OluYom
@GIGS: the issues you raised were behind my starting that roll. i will flog it for a while to see if there will be any more responses. will Edge in the way of HSCSD?
Posted by ares
@slamEVIL, itīs the opposite, UMTS is faster than EDGE...itīs technically superior
Posted by batesie
Edge isnt that much faster than GPRS when i tried it.
i'd say that 3G will be the next generation in the UK as Orange UK have dropped plans to support Edge in the UK, and all other networks have invested heavily in 3G and not Egde.
(EDGE is just jumped up GPRS or also known as EGPRS)
Posted by phsychomantis
In india edge is available for free with gprs and also edge is at least 4xgprs and every major gsm operator in india supports edge .
Posted by slamEVIL
i think that edge in the UK is different than in the US. edge over here is about 384Kb/s unshared.
Posted by Gigs
@psychomantis: it isn't just who offers it, its coverage (is 100% of india covered?) and how many of the subscribers have taken it up (It won't be 100%, i'll bet you that right now)
Posted by phsychomantis
Wherever there is gprs there is edge u dont have to pay extra. usage is only restricted by compatibility of phone .
Posted by Gigs
Think you missed my point but nevermind.

100% coverage in india! itll be very difficult and expensive task to set up even ordinary gsm network to cover 100%. hence u can imagine the costs of implementing 3g
i think hspda with 3g offer much value for money and the operators can reduce the cost comparing to existing utms networks (coupled with not much costly handsets like k600 ) . i think only from that point well be starting to see 3g in reality.
Posted by mario2002
Don't fool your self buddy.K600 is not going to be a cheap handset and also is not a 'proper' smart cell. But most important - it can't access EDGE and only comes out in 6months (hopefully)
Posted by phsychomantis
3g in india is still a dream edge is fastest in mobile connectivity .edge is available in most places where gprs is available which is not 100 percent of india

i dint say k600 is cheap . i did say its not so costly compared with other 3g phones.
