im not sure were they are stored but i believe a prgram called rockxp will pull them out of whatever file they are in for you, it also gives you your windows id office id etc

the passwords (if you login locally and not on a domain) are stored in the local SAM (Security Accounts Manager) database

The passwords are encrypted in a 128 bits key if I remember right so good luck decrypting them

yes, the local sam database has 128bit encryption... but 128bit isn't really much to brag about... if you have local access to the SAM database file you can use one of many programs available for retrieving passwords from local WinNT/2000/XP systems

Windows doesn't use pwd files for the userprofiles...

PWD was used in w95,98, etc. Those versions had a really strong security system, u could press cancel when ask for password and voila! u could enter the pc without knowing any password

yes, by adding a value to the registry you can prevent the "escape" login on Win95/98...

since it's not clear that the purpose is to get access to a computer other that your own it's not illegal....
