Seems to have everything I want, including a dual layer dvd writer which is not bad for the price. This model has just launched. Costs £1000 from sonystyle.
Will let you know what it's like once I receive it.

Boba, I think an IBM T30 or a Compaq N610c can be a choice if you can find around. They are still reliable though a bit out of date, and the price can be under your budget.

but a friend has two brand new Fujitsu Siemens AmiloD series.
It's a very powerfull pc 128mb 3d card, 80GB hard drive, wifi, bluetooth, all-in-one card reader, ir, 3.06ghz (p4 ht)
All for 830 pounds.
(this offer is for anyone interested of course)
It's mint, unopened, and is quite slim (he owns one himself)
They retail at 950 pounds but he's offering them cheaper.

Yes Acer is a well-known brand around these parts, I'm sitting in front of an Acer 17" LCD monitor.
A friend of mine just bought a new Acer laptop from amazon.co.uk, £600, 64 bit processor, very good value.
He hasn't got it yet though so I can't comment on the quality; if I had to buy a laptop, I would put Acer on the maybe pile.

have na acer ferarri 3200, the 3400 is out now. GREAT laptop, built in wifi, bt, ir, card reader, 4 usb, firewire, Radeon 9200 (in my model, 9700 or 9800 in the later model) Amd 2500 in mine (3200 in the later model I believe)
Very comfortable to use, screen is awesome VERY slim..
Can feel a little hot at times, but that would be where the HDD is. (not the CPU
)
