Is it possible to send Class 0 SMS messages from P800? It was possible on my old Sony CMD-J6...

TIP: Class 0 SMS is a SMS message sent 'to screen' - it is opened autamatically and displayed on the screen.

Not that I know of, unless a 3rd party app can do it.

Posted by govigov
it is a service offered by my telco, never tried it though.

Posted by MikLSP
I'd like to have this.

Posted by govigov
it is 5 times the cost of a normal sms

Now that I wouldn't like

Psiloc's eMessaging program supports FlashSMS...
http://www.psiloc.com/index.html?id=196

I don't like Psiloc stuff though, installs too much crap along with it.

Is it really worth it? Won't the reciever open it anyway?

Posted by MikLSP
Any other apps?

Posted by _TB_TB_
It shouldn't cost any more - the Class 0 message differs only with SMS header.

I know that it should be a third-party app. Does anyone have any? Except for Psiloc's EM.

Would it be possible to simply add a code to the start of the SMS in the same way u can call for a delivery report by writing *0# (on O2 at least)

Class 0 SMS has a different PID value. T-Mobile in the UK have this service available by prefixing the SMS body with !! (2 explanation marks). It costs exactly the same as a standard SMS.

With Class 0 SMS (also known as flash sms) the experience on the recipient end is handset dependant, sometimes the CLI is hidden, sometimes it isn't, sometimes the sms can be saved, sometimes it can't. What is particularly handy is that the SMS will be shown even if the SIM and inbox of the recieving handset is full.

Cheers,

Do u know if o2 support this & if so how to do it?

Posted by _TB_TB_
Nah, I'll have to buy a CMD-J6 again;)

iSMS supports FlashSMS i think.
but there seems to be far too many problems in using that software and the hassle of buying 'credits'.

im still a little confused
so when you get the sms, it automatically opens and is displayed, so you dont have to go to your sms inbox? is that it?

Posted by _TB_TB_
Yes.

Posted by whizkidd
Can these messages be stored in the inbox?

Posted by _TB_TB_
They can.

On some handsets only though... this implementation of this isn't consistent across the board.

If the difference is only in the header, would it be possible to save the message as draft, open with sman's hex editor, change a byte or two, and then send? Or does the handset wrap the header around the stored message?

so there i sno software for the p series that can send class 0 sms???
i am damn interested to have such a software!

As mentioned earlier Extended Messaging by PsiLoc can do it.
I've just tried the demo version & it works but depends on the receiving as to how it shows.

On SEs such as K7 & S7 it was perfect, the message appeared on the screen with date & time and no sender info. It disappears when u press ok.

On a Series60 Nokia it appears on the screen but also displays the senders info (name/number)

On a Samsung flip phone it was visible as soon as u open the flip but again showed the sender info.

If you're using SonyEricsson cellphone, you may try the Fma in order to send flash-messages. Adr.: http://sourceforge.net/projects/fma/. You can also send normal sms as well, but you will have to send from your pc.

Posted by _TB_TB_
But I would like to send such messages from my P800, not from my PC:P

Posted by MikLSP
So try Extended Messaging!
Find it on my-symbian

Installing any Psiloc software includes installation of lots of user-useless garbage "common licenser/catalog" etc. moreover, extended messaging is not a freeware (as any Polish app - even the Polish language pack is not free!)

and when it comes to displaying Class 0 messages on different mobiles - all depends on receipient's phone software..

Posted by MikLSP
It will depend on the recipients phone no matter what u use.

PsiLoc s/w doesn't install a catalogue etc for me.
Also there are other 'sources' for s/w than the commercial routes.

why don't we find out the difference between a class 0 message and a non-class 0 msg(?) by doing this
ill send myself two msgs one with and one without it, then all i need to do is go to the mail folder and compare the header in hex
all i need to do is find out what the mail folder is, thx

Class 0 SMS are defined by the coding of the TP-DCS (data coding scheme) of the user data header of the SMS. Generally SMS are of class 1 where bit 0=1 and bit 1=0... for class 0 sms both bits 0 & 1 = 0.

From the 3gpp spec 23.038 which specifies the coding of the DCS ...
Quote:
"When a mobile terminated message is class 0 and the MS has the capability of displaying short messages, the MS shall display the message immediately and send an acknowledgement to the SC when the message has successfully reached the MS irrespective of whether there is memory available in the (U)SIM or ME. The message shall not be automatically stored in the (U)SIM or ME."

for further reading go to the 3gpp site.

Hope this isn't too complex,
Mrs H

what do you type first?? adn what service menu is it that you found it in??

Posted by MrsHarris
As I previously said you send the SMS as normal but with 2 explanation marks at the start of the message body. The service can also be used via the "Interactive" or "Online" menu (can't remeber which one it is on the SEs). It will work from all handsets as it's a t-mobile (in the uk only I believe) network feature.

So if we open a message in a hex editor, at which position does the user header start?

Posted by MrsHarris
Erm... dunno off by heart. I'll have a look into this more and post up my findings.
