Do you guys think SE might be at a disadvantage by not releasing more clamshells? I mean they do seem to be fashionable at the moment.

Posted by david1975
im really hoping they will release some more flip phones love my z600 but would be good if they made a z version of the k750 or the w800

Posted by goldenface
I am just wondering why clamshells are predominant in Japan, is that the way the market will pan out eventually?

Posted by KrisUK
Not too fussed about SE releasing clamshells to be honest.
Starting to become bit too much of a trend and I find them more of an inconvenience than something worth having. The only real advantages of them is you've got the internal screen and keypad covered in your pocket but as long as you don't keep anything sharp with your phone in your pocket, it's not really an issue.

IMO, most are ugly in some way to start with like how SE's have ugly exteriors and Motorolas have ugly interiors (my opinion). The only brand I thought got it right were Samsung with models like the X460, E330 and E700.

Clamshells dont seem to be in favour much at the moment. Motorola, who always had a few clamshells out at once seem to be leaving them behind Nokia have only just caught up, as usual and samsung seem to focus more on slide phones now.

The main advantage of a clamshell is the fact it's small. Samsung get's this and that's why their sales are trough the roof. Nokia's also catching up with their last clamshell (can't remember the number). I think SEis waiting untill they can put enough power in a small housing, the main problem with SE clamshells up till now is that they are to big and in this business big does not sell.

@Delta 9 :
I don't agree with you that the size of clamshell is small.
Let's compare Z600 to T610/T630: Z600 is shorter but thicker than T610/T630 and when you open the phone, the maximum length of clamshell will be twice the length when it's folded. Is that you call "small"?

To be honest, Samsung is still the best in clamshell and sliding phone style and the worst is Nokia. SE made it right with Z200 (IMO Z600 and Z1010 is ugly and too thick, too big; never seen Z500 and Z800 yet)

I still can't understand why clamshell always refer to fashion, high-end and expensive phone because IMO most clamshell look so the same and has these disadvantages: short when folded but its shortness is gone when it's open; most of clamshell are thicker than candybar; you need more time to open the flip when activate the phone than candybar; the candybar has more possibility to vary the design the clamshell (clamshell got only that kind of style: with or without external screen, almost same keypad style, with or without external antenna, Nokia clamshells are copyed some of Samsung's, etc.)

So why spend more money to buy a clamshell variant of the phone if the candybar type is available and already good enough? (In other words: why should SE produce clamshell variant of K750 or W800? It'd better for SE to develop new phone than produce identic phone with changing the casing from candybar to clamshell) (And why the price for clamshell phone always more expensive than the candybar one for the same featured phone? For example: the price of Z600 is higher than T630...)

That's all, sorry for clamshell owners... don't take it personal, but it's true...

Z800i is the closest that SE has along with W800i and K750i.

I must disagree in some points though. Even though some SE flip phones are huge, but they are very comfortable when putting against the ear. My Z600 feels terrific when I talk and I have no problem with it. Its comfortable in the hand when I hold it even when closed or open.

SE might come up with Z750i or something similar to K750i at GSM-only market and not 3G. the real Z700 was discontinued and thank god it did since the design is terrible. Z750i though would sound nice with a new design and K750i's specs or somewhere near.

2 Clamshell a year would be nice on the market since the number isn't too high and supports the market. If too many came out then just like some of you said, clamshells aren't as popular in some places as the candybar. That's why SE might release 2 clamshell this year(just like Z600 and Z200) for may be Z800i and another mid-end one(Z750i I guess)

To think of designs, I think SE and Samsung recent releases had kept up with their own design and stayed away from other brand's design. Unlike Nokia that came out with 6030 that looks just like K300i but put in black to cover this significant. That's just not a good thought.

Dunno why. But i don't like clamshells. But anyway, There's nothing wrong in releasing more clamshells as there are people who like them.

Posted by goldenface
SE would actually do really well to release a clamshell version of the 3G K600i. After all, most 3G handsets are large clam phones and this would kick even more ass for clam fans.. I think Samsung is the current king of the clam.

Do samsung make 3g phones? Clamshells?

Posted by baseballfanz
I hate clam chowders.

Even though I love to eat clams and other seashells, I don't particularly like clamshell designs in cellphones.

I'd would prefer a Flip design -- yes a flip is different from a clamshell and I have to point that out because some of you here seems to assume that they are the same. These are flip phones:

while these are clamshells:

FYI

no matter what they say, clamshell looks better if they are quiet smaller, i'd be the first to buy an se clamshell if it is as small as that of motorolas v878 with the features of s700

Posted by mmsman
i would love a flip design

Posted by goldenface
SE might release more clam this year, probably 3G? I would like to see a nice flip too.

I agree with you. I also don't like clamshell design. But I have to admit that lots of people do and it is going to be more and more popular.

I would love to see a new flip design, not a clamshell. A flip gets all the advantage of a clamshell and all the advantage of a candybar. I love that my P910 is a flip to some extent.

Posted by Aivar
@ knight4led

Yes, flip phones are nice. I had T10s, T18s and T39m. And my girlfriend had her first phone - red GF 768.

Oh memories...

Posted by paulbroughton
I still think the best designed phone I ever had was the T28, well tiny and really thin! Ok the flip did open randomly and the screen was tiny....but still, what a great phone! Was the first phone to really compare to Nokia in the UI. Although now SE have obviously completely surpassed Nokia on the UI!

Posted by goldenface
I think I prefer a straightforward candybar, they just look neater though I draw the line at them being too small. I still think clams will be popular for a while though and SE should bring out more this year or they might lose out.

Posted by etaab
I think SE would benefit from making a clamshell smartphone, a candybar smartphone and the standard P series smartphone.

It would eat into Nokia's sales dramatically if SE were to provide more than just phones aimed at business users with smartphones.

Posted by blackspot
The thing I like most about Flip phones is the convenience. It can be easily opened with one hand and you don't have to think about locking keys or accidentally pressing the keys while the phone is in your pocket. It also looks neater IMO.

Posted by namal
Yea i hope SE will put some competition over mpx and mitac, etc phones.

Posted by govigov
i too would love a flip. not clam... because with flips, you could flick your wrist and open the phone and talk into it. looks cool in public.

eye balls

Posted by xj9
yup! a flip design with s700 features

Posted by Muhammad-Oli
I think flip phones are going out of fashion. A year ago they were in fashion. Now I think Candybar phones are coming back-SE, Motorola, Samsung, etc. must have done their market research and this is obviously the answer that they came up with-that candybar phones would sell better! That is why SE have released so many new candybars lately.

I am using my first clamshell Z550i ... to all other clamshell users out there..for how long does the clamshell hinge remains solid

Posted by shaliron
@c_vignesh
Well, it depends on the design, and how good the build quality on the Z550 is.

I have one, but its build quality is pretty shocking. The hinge like so have small horizontal movements in closed mode, creaks when opening, and the back cover is loose. All isn't too bad, but it really depends on how much experience a manufacturer has with producing them.

Posted by wanakin
i just bought w850.my first slide fone.hmm..... stick with candy bar i think....

Posted by vrl29
i think each phone maker specializes in something.

i like the fact that produces more candybar phones, they're more simple to use. i'm not a fan of the clamshell...

Posted by Exilim
Sony Ericsson flip phone...

Posted by c_vignesh
@Shaliron :

Are u speaking about a Z550i or some other clamshell .... my friend who got a Z550i along with me ..his phone's hinge seems to be loose now...after 3 months and i should say he is somewhat a rash user... i always use it with handsfree but still i have some concern about the life of hinge mechanism..otherwise there is no creaks either at the hinge or in the battery compartment of my phone

Posted by shaliron
@c_vignesh
Yeah, I do mean the Z550. I was not impressed by the build quality on the phone. Back to when people were complaining about the Z520. And I don't use my phone harshly either, and it isn't even my main phone so the hinge is not too good.

Posted by goldenface
@Exilim

Is that just a painted Sony Z5/7? And why is it featured on 3Gmobile?

Posted by Aware
@Goldenface, I think that is the stillborn Z700 that never released....
Colour screen, answerphone/memo added to Z7 features, would have demolished 8210/8310 etc.......but they canned it(sob!)........

Posted by goldenface
@Aware

Really? I didn't know that! I loved the Z7 too so this would have been cool. Its funny how the flip largely went out of fashion.

Posted by Aware
Ooo, GPRS and Bluetooth as well, yes it would have been awesome........
.....still a page on Expansys for it:

http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=102619

Now you can see why the P-series looks/runs the way it does - evolution, eh??

Yeah, especially the rotating globe menu - thats pure Sony.

Nice to see the Z610i selling well too!

Posted by c_vignesh
@Shaliron
Up till now my z550i hinge seems to be solid as on the first day..and there was no creaks coming out from my set from the first day...

Posted by Exilim
Yes a shame it wassent releasede...
Cool with the jog dail.

some more pics..

I can't believe no one mentioned the Z710/W710...

Posted by Residentevil
Because it has not been very popular. It looks kinda awkward

Posted by driftmania
not to mention thick and bulky.
it's a really ugly phone.

Posted by shaliron
Well I thought that it wasn't mentioned because the topic was about why SE doesn't release many clamshells, not to name every SE clamshell.

But on the topic of the Z710, I reckon it looks really nice. Maybe I'm the only one, but I think it looks very business like and fresh at the same time. And the huge external display is really nice as well. It's cool because it is "like-no-other'

Posted by QuickShare
nobody consider a Z610? that phone looks pretty decent for me.. not too sure about the interior

Posted by c96sthl
z710 seem to have all the UI of K800 minus all the camera goodies.
to me the music player is good enough even it cannot beat my other phone...W550 when it come to loudspaker music play back.

For the price you pay ...you get such powerful....not a bad deal.

Posted by dancingfate
I think W710 is a nice clamshell from .
But yesterday a friend of mine who has bought a W710 told me that W710 has no MegaBass. Is that true? How could do that to a phone? No MegaBass? Sounds ridiculuous to me....

Posted by Quixotic115
I really like that new Z610 clamshell phone though; it seems that if they can make a clamshell phone like that, SE can continue to make more. Candybar is nice but it gets boring. I'd like to see more clamshell and sliders.
