Access internet on PC using Hutch GPRS

Though there are other threads that give the solution. I am still confused on how to set this whole thing up.
1) What is an APN and how do i find that?
2) How do i find the x in the following dialup number to be used from PC
*99***x#
'x' corresponds to the number of the data account on your mobile you wish to use.
Thanks in advance
BTW i am from bangalore using Hutch GPRS (99 rs)
Thanks
Krish

Hi there! I'm not sure if the 99 rupees package allows full net access. Tell me how are you trying to access the net? Which phone are you using? The dial up access number for orange is *99***1#.

Posted by weekrish
I am using a Nokia 6600 and trying to use my phone as a modem to connect to internet using my PC.
I too am not sure if this will work but nevertheless want to try and figure out if it does.
thanks
Krish

Yup it should work, i've replied to your query in the other thread. APN btw stands for access point...in case of hutch its portalnmms. Since you are usin a 6600 you can access web on your phone as well by conf proxy setting in opera/netfront etc

I dont think u can access full internet using hutch gprs.

First of all. Confirm whether you are allowed to surf net in the plan You've subscribed to. Then download the modem driver for the 6600 from the nokia website. Load it on to your pc. Then go to settings>control panel> and modem options and see if the 6600 is listed in there. How are you planning to connect your phone to the pc- via infrared?

Usin the settings that hutch provides...NO
Tweak them a bit and off you go

Better call up the customer care and ask them if you're allowed to access the net. If not, you won't be able to do all this. ;-)

So do u know the proxy trick?

Posted by whizkidd
Cool! Then tell him how to do it @clank!

Posted by Evil Eye
Ya i am eagerly waiting.

Posted by clank
@ manish go into opera connection settings, there enable proxy settings...in proxy server slot enter your ip address ie 10.10.1.100, in port no enter 9401...save these settings and you have web access.
NOTE: All settings given above are for hutch delhi n work without any problems for me n my mates.
NOTE2: You still wont be able to access pop3 mail servers usin phone coz that requires an igprs apn.
NOTE3: I take no responsibility in case your phone self destructs after these settings...just kiddin

Not working for me.

Whats for airtel?

Posted by clank
@govi when i was on airtel i used to access net usin ip address as proxy server n in port no type 8080
@manish Thats strange, wat error message you get? Maybe your ip is different than the one in delhi tho i doubt it. I'm currently online usin these very settings on hutch 99rs pm and opera only so they should work...maybe its a delhi thing

Cant create connection.

Posted by govigov
Already tried that. Tried it again. Not working.

I'm satisfied with my airtel connection. It offers full net access with EDGE at just 150 bucks. Cheap enough not to venture out seeking other measures for free net!

Posted by Evil Eye
Its not working for me too.

U r LUCKY Whiz !!! I pay 600 p.m for unlimited GPRS in Airtel

Posted by clank
Must be a delhi thing then, good for me Actually the gprs connections here are very different from other cities so it may be possible, i had to move away fron airtel coz they have no gprs option on prepaid(no nomal gprs, no igprs...just airtel live thing)

You are lucky man! Btw in calcutta its just 99pm for igprs with airtel

Hey clank, isn't there something called Airtel tango dial up wap service in Delhi?

Posted by govigov
I'm on prepaid using mobile office.

Posted by clank
@whiz the tango thing was closed down years ago, nobody would pay 50p/min for slow wap
@govi if you're on mobile office then you should have full web access...its igprs aint it?

Posted by govigov
Yeah, but still if there is a free option, why should i pay for it now?

Posted by clank
@manish check some settings:
1) Have you enabled proxy...for ex on my pc apart from enterin settings i also have to enable it first
2) Enter proxy server adddress as 10.10.1.100 and NOT 010.010.001.100 (btw if your default hutch settings come with a diff ip add then you'll have to enter that) Also verify port is 9401(also try 8080 for hit n trial purposes) Btw these settings have to entered in http proxy slot so make sure you're enterin them there.
3) Clear cache, cookies etc and try later at night coz you may be facin network congestion.
If still doesnt work then i'm afraid i'm clueless...maybe hutch have blocked it or somethin in your city

Posted by whizkidd
Funny. The tango settings are still available for download from the SE site!

Posted by clank
Ya i'm sure i've come across the tango settings on the se website as well

Posted by govigov
I pay 250 a month. That is both your charges combined! Clank, any other trick for airtel?

Posted by clank
I've done lots of tricks with airtel over the years but they're all old/over now 1.5yrs back when airtel didnt even have gprs wap i used to use it my mixin mms apn n tango ip Then when they introduced masala service it was locked to airtel's homepage but i used mms apn to access every site On my nokia 3530 i used to send free sms via gprs n must've sent millions of free txt n even won 1000rs talktime in a airtel sms contest Then when they came out with airtel live and opened access to all sites i used the proxy trick for free web. But now those are just fond memories coz i'm currently busy tryin my antics with hutch... Btw if still put my airtel sim in my phone the airtel live thing works(havent done this for a week now tho) n i can dl free from their home page coz i dont have balance

Guys help me in sending sms via gprs. I have airtel mobile office

Posted by whizkidd
That has never worked for me. But others were able to do it on the likes of the K700, the trick involves the changing the sms reception option from gsm to gprs.

Posted by govigov
All you need to do is change? Nothing else?

Posted by whizkidd
I really dunno gov. Try it anyway.

Posted by vmaliwal1987
The SMS through GPRS trick has never worked for me in Calcutta (Airtel) using my previous T230.

Btw..I am using Airtel Mobile Office here for Rs. 99 a month and am being able to access internet through PC using my Nokia 6600 with a bluetooth dongle...No extra settings were required to be downloaded..Just the MODEM configuration had to be set and the telephone number for dialup connection was set as *99***#

Posted by govigov
The dial up number is *99***# ? And pass?

Posted by whizkidd
Gov, i guess you create a password when you first enter your settings.

Posted by vmaliwal1987
Well... the username and password fields are blank for the dialup connection which I've made.

Posted by whizkidd
Oh yes! Just enter the dial up numbers and thats it' no need for username and password!

Posted by govigov
Thanks will try.

Posted by whizkidd
News just in. I called up cc and they told EDGE isn't yet available in Palghar. :-( But it will be here any time soon!

Posted by c_vignesh
Changing the SMS option to GPRS didnt work for me ... i tried both the Live profile and MO profile ... is there any other way ... for guys paying just Rs.99/- All I can say u r all very LUCKY

Posted by govigov
I havent tried it yet, next time i will send a sms, i will try.

Posted by vmaliwal1987
@c_vignesh...I dont think there is any other alternative for that sms thing..
@gov.. Did u try with that dial up number which i gave u? Did it work?

Posted by clank
@vmali you're on mobile office mate, it is meant for web purposes so there is no way either you or govi(also on mobile office) wont be able to access the web. Now comin to the dial up number...that is actually NOT a dial up no but a code that instructs your phone to dial the data account no x where x is *99***x#

Posted by govigov
Should i leave the username and password blank?
