O2 3G questions.

I really like the Nokia 6630's features and on O2 3G it is really good value.
I'm currently on O2 online Pay & Go and was wondering if I could buy their £19 a month contract and keep my current O2 phone number?
Also will they provide me with a USIM card or a normal SIM card?
After the 12 month contract do I have a option to return back to P&G on the same number/USIM or would I have to purchase another SIM and loose my current phone number?

Hi i work for o2 and sold the 1st 3G contract in Northern ireland (on o2! sorry just had 2 get in my little self praise) Yes you can move from o2 pay and go and keep your number, the number port usually takes around 3 days but give it up to 7 just in case. O2 will provide you with a temporary contract number to use. you will be provided with a new 3G sim card as the old sims don't work in the new phones. After the year you can cancel you contract and move back onto pay and go cos by that stage o2 will have 3G pay and go sim cards availbale. And yes you will also be able to keep your number on the transfer back. The phone itself will probably cost you a little more on the £19 tarriff, i think the price of it drops when you go onto the £35 per month tariff but don't hold me to that just on the off chance i may be wrong! Hope the info helps, if you have any other questions about it just gimme a shout.

are o2 offering any incentives like orange and vodaphone. had a flick on there site and could see no offers above the usual online plans. with orange for example you get 50mb free a month for 12 months and 50 mins of video calls on top of your free mins etc

Many thanks for your help, it seems that the phone is only £99 on the £19 a month deal too, you get 50 anytime mins and 500 txt's a month, its great.
Does that include any WAP usage or do I have to add the O2 Active bolton for the WAP usage allowence?
Thanks
Ash

You get 1meg free then the active will give you 5meg for £4.
They don't seem to be charging at the moment on GPRS so don't know what's happening for 3G charges.

is there a launch date for 3g payg yet?

Posted by peterpan211
There is no date for the release of 3g on pay as you go on o2.

And at the moment i know that there is no plans for them to release a sim card only package...every 3g sim card (USIM) will have to be purchased with a handset - and as far as im aware they are going to try keep it that way as long as possible...

When there is a release date...ill be in touch...only outside wat id be allowed to say...

ok - official line - cant buy a prepay 3g sim for o2, and if you get a handset on prepay 3g and your sim goes faulty at the moment they might have to replace the whole lot...not sure what they are going to do but they will soon have it so they can replace the sim card only...

But this still means that anyone that gets a 3g handset only - like me...cant get a sim card for it yet - so im stuck with a standard genie sim card...

Unless i convert to the dark side '3'

cant really be converting to 3 though...considering...where i work

O2's 3G coverage is rather less than total at the moment, especially in Scotland. I was quite surprised to see that they have no coverage in Glasgow at all. Do you know when O2 plan on extending coverage to Glasgow?

@ the moment there is only the cities that are supported at the moment and each provider has to have a set amount of coverage by this time next year - mainly all the major cities and more if possible, but everyone is aiming to get this done way before then, so i would say glasgow will have coverage this year...

hope this helps - although cant really say too much...

How long would you say it will take for coverage to extend outside of cities? I live in a large village not far from a busy dual carriageway, near a large town not that far from Derby. When (roughly) will places like that start being put on the 3G network?

no plans as of yet...

will keep you all posted...

'wen' o2 payg 3g is available. Do u know if existing customers wil b able to hav ther sim cards updated? I hav a genie sim which was updated 4 mms and gprs. Or wil i hav to hav a new usim??

Posted by peterpan211
When it is released no u wont be able to have the sim updated like you can with mms and gprs, as its a completely different type of sim, apparently you can tell its a 3g sim by something to do with the SSN (Sim serial number and the code) cant really explain exactly what your looking for.

Although i have heard that one customer has asked for the settings for his phone so it will work in america...and then complained because we couldnt send them out :S

O2 said its 3G network is now available in over 20 major cities in towns throughout the UK, and hopes to offer coverage to 50 per cent of the UK population by June 2005.
