That is rediculous. Damn microsoft. Imagine, in 45 years time, when cars drive themselves, how much trouble you'd be in if you set it to go there and fell asleep? You'd wake up half way accross the UK like WTF?!?!?!?

I see how everyone blames Microsoft immediately. I guess in some way they are responsible but software companies almost never gather this kind of data themselves and use suppliers and so the data is totally dependant on their quality.
Microsoft use Navtech and indeed you can see that my latest version microsoft autoroute (2005) plots the same route
however Garmin use data from the norweigan mapping authority and my GPS (and the pc software) plots a good route

Still that is not the shortes route.
I'll dig out a Norwegian road map later to show you.
Edit:
Here you go:

seems that my garmin one is still slighty shorter, though there is not much in it.
its shows as 483 miles which multipled by 1.609 gives 777km
I guess local knowledge would tell you which was the better route to take
edit: just noticed. that one is showing as 17 hours whereas the garmin one is 12:24

@masseur: "your" route is shorter as we can see, and probably quicker too. Its cause yours uses a renault 5 as a average time test, and tranquils uses a ferrari....lol

there is 'shorter' and there is 'faster'
Our national routeplanner gives both options and they are not necessarily the same
Posted by nickorooster
Good point. I suppose faster would stick to main (faster) roads, while shorter would go through the back roads.

Yeah I tried both and interestingly in Microsoft Autoroute it came up with the same route in both cases and also the Garmin software came up with its same route for quickest and shortest
these softwares really are limited by the data available but in uk and mainland europe they haven't let me down so far

You can see the link on all blogs and websites these days, it's funny, but still don't know why they aren't fixing the problem as it's very popular right now ...

"dont blame microsoft, they didnt gather the data..."
Its their name on the box, its their problem. Having said that, its only one small bug...
